Francis J. Hagan, M. D.

Dr. Francis Hagan was founder of the Mid-Kansas Wrestling Association dating back to the 1960’s. Dr. Hagan developed his interest and love for the sport when his oldest son. Jim, had no place to go to practice wrestling. Dr. Hagan purchased a wrestling mat and placed it in his garage on his farm. His home located southwest of Wichita soon became the mecca for all young men in rural Sedgwick County to wrestle.

In the summer of 1963, Dr. Francis Hagan set up a series of wrestling duals with neighboring rural communities. Many of the dual matches were organized with the help of Tom Faust from Derby, Lawrence Alley from Douglass, and Bill Stanhope from Colwich, all three Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame entrants. The Mid-Kansas Wrestling Association that Dr. Francis Hagan helped create soon gave way in 1967-1968 to the Kansas Kid’s Wrestling Program.

Dr. Hagan was fortunate to have his four (4) boys, Jim, Mike, Ned, and Steven wrestle in the legendary Hagan’s garage and see three of his boys compete for Wichita Kapaun-Mount Carmel Catholic High School.

Dr. Hagan was a medical physician who practiced in Wichita from 1942 to 1987.
