Duwane Miller
 

For nineteen (19) years Duwane Miller dominated high school wrestling in Kansas while coaching at Wichita Kapaun-Mount Carmel High School. His list of accomplishments is impressive and astounding: he established a dual meet record of 128-17-2; won 110 consecutive dual meets; compiled eleven (11) consecutive and thirteen (13) total Wichita City League titles; captured eight (8) Team State Championships; coached thirty eight (38) individual State Champions; trained twelve (12) high school All-Americans; and won the only two (2) Kansas Grand State Championships.

Miller was a true example of a sportsman of the highest caliber. The program he developed and maintained at Kapaun-Mount Carmel is unmatched. His practices were on of a kind; fundamental drills and conditioning, supreme concentration and relentless work rule practices.
His athletes were held to high behavior, academic and personal standards. He was always honest with his athletes about their abilities and motivated them to excel to peak performance.

As a wrestler himself, Miller, wrestling for the University of Oklahoma, established some impressive statistics: captured two (2) Big Eight Conference Wrestling Championships (1960 and 1961); named Outstanding Wrestler of the Big Eight Tournament (1961); captured the 1961 NCAA Championship at 123 pounds his senior year, capping a collegiate career of 47-3; and named University of Oklahoma “Male Athlete of the Year” in 1961.

A quiet man, Miller made a loud contribution to the sport of wrestling in Wichita. His honors include: Kansas Coach of the Year (1975); National Coach of the Year (1978); High School Wrestling Coach of the Year (1979); Kansas Wrestling Coach of the Year (1983); Kansas 5A Wrestling Coach of the Year (1984); and USA Wrestling Man of the Year (1987).

Duwane Miller’s great records and achievements in wrestling do not overshadow his tremendous qualities as a human being. He is truly one of a kind!
