6A Assistant Coach of the Year - 2002

ED LEE
Topeka-Washburn Rural High School

In the 6A ranks, it is Topeka-Washburn Rural High School’s longtime assistant coach Ed Lee as this year’s recipient of the Assistant Coach of the Year. Lee has served as a Junior Blue assistant since 1996, and previously was an assistant at Washburn Rural Middle School since 1992. Lee helped produce six state qualifiers and one state placer for the Junior Blues last season with WRHS head coach Richard Fergola.

Lee wrestled at Vermillion, South Dakota, a school rich in wrestling tradition over the years. He was a member of the wrestling team, which was one of the top teams in the state each year, but he unfortunately lost his senior season due to a back injury. In the springtime, Lee was a member of the state championship 4x100-meter relay team as a sprinter.

Lee came to Kansas and competed collegiately in track and field at Emporia State University for 2 ½ years. He graduated from ESU in 1992, and has been teaching seventh grade Math and Science at Washburn Rural Middle School ever since. He also has served as a middle school track and field coach as well.
