Media of the Year - 2002

CHRISTIAN D. ORR
Salina Journal

The Salina Journal’s Christian D. Orr is a Media of the Year award winner. Orr provides excellent newspaper media coverage of the sport of wrestling throughout each season.

Orr has served as a sports writer for the Salina Journal for three and a half years. During that time, he has provided North Central and Northwest Kansas with a weekly prep page, which takes an in-depth look at an area wrestling team each week as well as a feature story on an area wrestler every other week. Orr also provides statistical leaders in wrestling for his area. He supplies full regional and state tournament coverage as well as some dual coverage throughout the season.

Orr previously worked as a sports writer at the Joplin Globe from 1997-1999 and as sports writer/sports editor at the Dodge City Daily Globe from 1993-1997.

“The sport of wrestling, and more specifically my high school wrestling coach, Abilene’s Bill Christner, has done a great deal to shape the type of person that I am today,” said Orr. “Coach Christner, and the sport of wrestling, taught me things about life that I never would have gained in any other place.”

“As far as coverage of wrestling is concerned, when I have wonderful coaches like Colby’s Mitch Biems, Hoxie’s Kirk Baker, Clay Center’s Dennis Charbonneau, and Abilene’s Bill Christner to work with, it makes covering the sport simple,” Orr explained. “The thing I think some wrestling coaches forget sometimes is that many times the media does want to do stories on wrestling, but we also need help from the coaches. I have been blessed with coaches all over North Central and Northwest Kansas that appreciate the work I do and do everything they can to make my job easier.”
