5A Coach of the Year - 2003

Ark City’s Greg Buckbee is the winner of this year’s 5A Coach of the Year honor.  Buckbee led his squad to an undefeated dual season of 8-0, an Ark Valley League championship, a 5A Regional runner-up finish, then a 5A state title.

Buckbee was also named the Ark Valley League Coach of the Year in 2003 as well for his exciting season.

Buckbee began his coaching career while attending Emporia State University.  He served as a Rule 10 assistant coach for Manhattan High School in 1984-85.  He then coached for the dominant Emporia Spartans as a Rule 10 assistant from 1985-92.  He was the head coach at Chase County High School from 1992-96 and at Council Grove High School from 1996-99.  In 1999, Buckbee served as an assistant coach at Ark City High School before taking over the program the next year.  He has been the head coach for Ark City for three years.

Buckbee serves as a seventh grade Science teacher at Ark City Middle School.  He graduated from Emporia State University in 1992.

As a scholastic competitor, Buckbee competed for Emporia High School, winning a state title as a junior and placing second as a senior.
