DOUG MOORE

“I can remember falling in love with wrestling when I was five years old and watching my brothers compete. I knew then that was what I wanted to do,” recalls longtime coach Doug Moore of Concordia. “Because there was no youth wrestling then, I would have to wait until seventh grade to realize my dream. I believe everyone needs a vehicle to take them through life and wrestling is mine.”

Coach Moore’s accomplishments in wrestling are a realization of his dream, a dream that began as an Oakley High School Plainsman. In 1971, Coach Moore claimed the 98-pound runner-up medal, and in 1972, the 112-pound state title for the Plainsmen. Coach Moore went on to McCook Junior College for two years, then on to compete for Fort Hays State University, from where he graduated in 1976.

Coach Moore began his teaching career at Greensburg in 1977, went on to Kinsley in 1978, and finally on to Concordia in 1981 where he has become synonymous with Panther wrestling. His dual record is a phenomenal 206–95–3; 197–75–2 at Concordia where he guided a 61 dual Panther win streak from 1987–1991. During his tenure at Concordia, Coach Moore has coached two 4A State Championship teams in 1988 and 1995, a 4A Runner-up finish in 1989, and a Third Place finish in 1992. He has coached 65 State placers, including 18 State Champions – four of whom were three time State Champs and two who were four time finalists.

With all his coaching success came many opportunities to be a leader in the wrestling community and considerable recognition for his success and leadership. Coach Moore has twice served as president of the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, vice president, and treasurer. He was the KWCA’s 4A Coach of the Year twice, 1988 and 1995, Kansas Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1995, and NFICA Region 5 Coach of the Year also in 1995.

Coach Moore puts it all into perspective by stating, “The tremendous support of my family beginning with my parents and continuing with my wife (Lisa) and children (Danielle an Dylan) today are a blessing that I will always cherish.
