Kirk has lived in the SFT community all of his life. He was the beginning of the "Trail" tradition, as he was the first wrestler to place in the state tournament for SFT. He finished 2nd in 4A state as a senior in 1982.

Shortly after high school, Kirk became a coach in the Trailhands wrestling program, where he served as the head coach and President of the club several of those years. Kirk was hired as an assistant coach at SFT in 2001.

Kirk, and his wife Dianne have three children: Justin, a 2005 undefeated state champion who currently is wrestling at Labette Community College; Kylie, a senior at SFT who competes in volleyball and softball and is a wrestling manager; and Kelsi, a sophomore at SFT who competes in volleyball, basketball, and softball. Both Kylie and Kelsi are in the top ten academically in their respective classes.

Kirk is a shift manager at Westar Energy who also farms and raises cattle with his brother and dad.
