5A Coach of the Year - 2006

BRIAN SHELTON
Valley Center High School

 

Coach Brian Shelton always his Hornet wrestling squad at the top of the 5A ranks, and 2005-06 was no exception. Shelton led the Hornets to a third-place finish in a 5A tournament that was considered by many to be perhaps the toughest class of them all this season.

Shelton's Valley Center team went 19-3 in duals and won the AVCTL with a 5-0 record. They were 5A Regional champions with 13 state qualifiers.

Shelton was an assistant wrestling coach at Wichita South in 1994, then head wrestling coach at Wichita Southeast from 1995-96. In 1997 he took over the head position at Valley Center High School, where he is a Psychology instructor.

Shelton was a part of the traditional power Wichita-Kapaun team in high school, leading the team to numerous state titles. He also was a member of the Kansas Junior National Freestyle team.

He graduated from Wichita State University in 1992.
