Since childhood Warren J. "Barney" Boring has displayed a unique and committed interest in the sport of wrestling. Through learning the sport as a teen at the local YMCA in Kansas City, Kansas to competing as a 78 year old at the USA Veterans National Championships, Dr. Boring has spent a lifetime learning and teaching the sport of wrestling to many.

At sixteen. Dr. Boring entered the Kansas National Guard which offered him the opportunity to successfully pursue wrestling before entering college. After enrolling at the University of Kansas in hopes of continuing a wrestling career, the university disbanded the wrestling program. Eventually, Dr. Boring enrolled at Kansas State University in 1939 and resumed wrestling at K-State. After the disruption of World War II, during which he earned three Purple Hearts, Dr. Boring re-enrolled at K-State and was elected captain of the wrestling team for the 1946-47 season.

After graduation from Kansas State, Dr. Boring began his coaching career at St. Francis High School in 1947. During his tenure the Indians won three state titles, 1949,1952, and 1953. Also, in 1952 Dr. Boring and the St. Francis Lions Club organized and conducted the Mid-West Olympic try-outs. Undoubtedly, Dr. Boring's influence had helped establish St. Francis as the wrestling power it continues to be.

In 1953 Dr. Boring and his wife Anne moved their family from St. Francis to Bloomington, Indiana where he ultimately earned his Doctorate. While there, Dr. Boring assisted with University of Indiana wrestling team and upon earning his Doctorate continued his career in education at the California State College at Long Beach in 1956. While at Long Beach Dr. Boring initiated college courses in wrestling as part of the Physical Education program and founded and served as head coach of the Long Beach State wrestling team from 1957 through 1965. Dr. Boring's career as an educator at Long Beach State University continued until 1988 during which time he tirelessly promoted wrestling at the university and throughout the state of California. One of the ways he taught and promoted the sport was through the publication of various articles and books about wrestling. For example, in 1975 Dr. Boring published "Science and Skills of Wrestling a 330 page technical textbook of wrestling. In addition, Dr. Boring was an inaugural member of the Southern California Wrestling Association, an organization to which he served as president for ten years.

Dr. Boring has not limited sharing his experience and expertise of the sport to Kansas, Indiana, and California. He has influenced wrestling programs as a clinician and coach world wide, including Australia. His experiences at Long Beach State University culminated with his induction to the Long Beach State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. He has continued to be an active promoter of wrestling by donating memorabilia and finances to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Additionally, Dr. Boring has remained very active as a competitor and inspiration to wrestling as represented by his competition at the 1998 USA Veterans National Championships at Waterloo, Iowa. Currently, Dr. Boring continues to voice the benefits of physical activity as an economic and physical lifesaver for all from his home in Los Alamitos, California.
