New age class changes

New age class changes - 02/02/10 04:19 PM

I am not sure about the new age class change and need some help.
If your child is in high school but is still in the 14 and under age group where do you wrestle for kids? Any help would be great. Thanks

Re: New age class changes - 02/02/10 04:40 PM

If your child is eligible to wrestle 14 and under he or she has the option to wrestle 14 and under or High School. This was voted on at the State body meeting.

Re: New age class changes - 02/02/10 04:42 PM

That is up to you, they can wrestle in either. It depends on the wrestlers ability. If you want to see where your wrestler stacks up with the High School wrestlers, wrestle High School. If your wrestler is new to the sport, or finds plenty of competition in his own age division wrestle 14U. A 14 year old High School Champion should probably wrestle High School, but again it is entirely up to the parents, coaches, and wrestler.

Re: New age class changes - 02/02/10 05:12 PM

So you could be in the High school age group for 5 years?

Re: New age class changes - 02/02/10 05:35 PM

The high school is for FRESHMEN thru Seniors.
Some freshmen still fall into the 14U group. They can choose which class to wrestle in.
So really the most you should be in that class is more the four years.

Re: New age class changes - 02/02/10 06:24 PM

Technically a wrestler could be in the High School Divsion for 5 years. A 14 year old 8th grader whose birthday falls late could be in for 5 years.

Rule 4-4-1
At no time will a wrestler be permitted to wrestle out of their age division.

The way I see it an 8th grader cannot wrestle up in the 'High School' division regardless if they are 14 years of age.

Re: New age class changes - 02/02/10 07:07 PM

You are correct. I meant a 15 year old 8th grader. Let's say he turned 15 on August 31st and was an 8th grader. He could wrestle 5 years of High School.

I just have to say this topic threw me for a loop. I wondered what "New Age" thinking had to do with wrestling. Now I know.

Rule 4-4-1 High School Division
.
The High School Division is available for wrestlers currently attending high school, or middle school if their age does not qualify them for a younger age division.

The way I read that is, the 'high school division' is only available to middle schoolers who exceed the age of 14? That is a prime example of why we should not rush changes to the constitution and by-laws and they should be written on something other than a cocktail napkin and distributed prior to the state meeting.

Re: New age class changes - 02/02/10 09:08 PM

I'd like to see a count of 8th graders that are not eligible for 14u.

You'll be hard pressed to find many, if any.

Re: New age class changes - 02/02/10 09:17 PM

I agree but the whole rule is confusing by even mentioning middle schoolers.

Re: New age class changes - 02/02/10 09:23 PM

If your child is 14 and under and wants to wrestle in the High School division they have that option. This was voted on at the State Body meeting. This is a kids modification to the High School rules.

Again, that is not my interpretation of that rule. As I read it, you can only wrestle the high school division if you are IN high school. As I read it, a 14U 8th grader does not qualify for the high school division.

Re: New age class changes - 02/03/10 01:33 AM

I believe sportsfan is correct, but I haven't heard anyone on here complaining about their 8th grader that is 14u, not being able to wrestle the HS division.

Re: New age class changes - 02/03/10 04:03 AM

so is this the new rule for districts and kids state high school instead of 16u and if so what weight classes are being used

Re: New age class changes - 02/03/10 10:05 AM

You will find them under the rules section on the button to the left of this page.

Re: New age class changes - 02/03/10 02:27 PM

Is the high school division going to wrestle the high school wieghts or the kids wieghts. If they wrestle kids wieghts some of the matchups everyone has been hoping to see across all classes might not happen?
Posted By: Beeson

Re: New age class changes - 02/03/10 02:33 PM

They are wrestling the kids weights. Even if they were wrestling High School weights, we would not see the match ups. Senior Nationals, Flow Nationals, and several other tournaments are that same weekend.

Re: New age class changes - 02/03/10 03:06 PM

Thanks for the info, thought maybe we could see something close to grand state.

Re: New age class changes - 02/03/10 05:20 PM

Are you sure about the weights being kids' weights? I thought the reason the Classic was doing HS weights was because the kids series was doing them? I think they were doing a 3 lb allowance, to try to keep the HS kids at the weights they wrestled in HS. From the Wichita Classic flyer:
"High School: 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189,
215, 245, 275 (+3 POUND GROWTH ALLOWANCE - HS ONLY)"

Looks like they added a 245.

This is said all without me doing any research, so maybe Richard can clarify it for us.

Re: New age class changes - 02/03/10 05:47 PM

This rule seems like it will make the 14 and under weight class easier and smaller.

That was certainly a concern of some on another thread last fall and was discussed on here and at the state meeting.

Re: New age class changes - 02/03/10 06:28 PM

There will be a few really good 14 year HS kids that move in that direction mainly in the lighter weights. Most 14 year
HS kids are not going to match up very well with junior and seniors that are close to the top of their game.

Re: New age class changes - 02/03/10 06:46 PM

Using Chiefs latest allclass rankings: with grades and weights only a hand full of 14 year olds will make the Kids State podium in the hs division - that is if they make it to state or districts. There will be a few older guys who place in their HS State and do not make it to kids state.
