What has Rice At 40 done to be ranked that high

Last year he was a State Qualifier. I haven't seen any results from Horton this year. Please post any information that you may have here so we can make a more accurate ranking.

I have seen Rice wrestle this year and he is a very qualified young man to be in the rankings. And Chief is correct in that he was a state qualifier. The only loss my 140lb wrestler has(who is also a state qualifier from 09') is to Rice in the second match of the year.

Yes, Denny beat Long 5 to 4 during the quarterfinals of the state tournament.

May want to keep an eye on freshman Nick Wuthnow, hes atleast two time kids state champ and multi state placer, and I believe his only loss this season was a one pointer to a ranked senior from Beloit early in the season,freshman are only going to get better and stronger!!

Is Thomas Lowe injured did not see him @ Minneapolis tournament this weekend?

Thomas Lowe is not wrestling this year is what I was told.

Thomas did not go out for wrestling. My understanding is that he is going to focus on getting larger and stronger for college football. I believe he is going to play for Butler Community College next season.

I think Hoxie should be the clear cut #2 ranked team. Calvin Ochs (state runner-up) and Donovan Schamberger aren't ranked, but have state experience and probably should be. Combine that with sophomores like Brandon Salmans and Steven Yergy...Hoxie just has much more depth than Rossville and Eureka.

Eureka should probably not be ranked as high with their ranked 215 pounder not participating this season.

I think you are right in making the assumption that Hoxie will have more possible state placers on its team than Rossville. However, Hoxie has to wrestle in a more difficult regional than Rossville. This will leave a few of their wrestlers in the stands instead of on the mats in Gross Memorial.

In addition Rossville looks like they have a group of middleweights that could all tear through their brackets at state. This will give Rossville many bonus points with state finalist compared to the consolation placements Hoxie looks to get.

I would compare this team of Rossville wrestlers to Smith Center's team last year. Smith Center only had four state qualifiers but they still managed to take second because they had three state finalist and another wrestler come through the backdoor.

Maybe this Hoxie team will surprise me and can score a ton of backside bonus points like the 2004 Scott City team that won state.

The season is young, we will really see what these teams are made of come late January and February.

Why did Caney drop from #3 to not being in the top 10? Especially since Fredonia is now #5 and Caney defeated them in a dual 58-28.

I am adjusting the rankings today before the xmas break and then I am not going to look at them again until 2011. I have updated some things and have taken out a few wrestlers that are not competing. As far as a team defeating another in a dual and that team placing high in a tourney..it happens! We beat Auburn 45-30 and won 9 out of 11 matches in the dual only to get 2nd to them at our own tourney by 9 points. It is a fact of wrestling that you can be a good dual team and not a good tourney team, but I will look at it.
And as far as the above comment...Rossville is TOUGH!

Dear Coach Brown,

Just to let you know Calvin Ochs of Hoxie finished below Cole Werner of Plainville and Trevor Kennedy of Lakin at the Hoxie tourney in the 125 bracket.

I realize Ochs was a state runner-up at 112, but he likely lost to Kennedy in the semifinals at Hoxie. Kennedy was a state qualifier last year that made it to the blood round at 119. Werner was also a state runner-up and that was at a 119.

Ochs is a good wrestler, however he does not deserve to be ranked ahead of two wrestlers he finished behind in a tournament "this" season. If I were doing the rankings I'd put him at the 6th place spot because Michael Vander Linden of Burlington has not had a loss and he placed 4th at 119 last season. However, Vander Linden did wrestle in a quad dual last night where he could have wrestled Humphrey of Fredonia and Wright of Eureka. Nevertheless, Ochs should not be ahead of Kennedy or Werner.

I've got another spot I disagree with you. At 112s Axelson of Plainville was pinned by Wessling of Beloit in a dual at the beginning of the season.

On the results it appears to read "WDF" which would likely be an injury default.

However, Hayes continued to wrestle at the tournament. The Guthmiller v. Hayes match happened after 5 PM on Friday. Then Hayes wrestled in a dual after 8 PM against Goodland pinning O'Harah. The next day he wrestled in a dual against Oberlin pinning Fortin.

So he may have forfeited one match due to injury but he continued to wrestle throughout the weekend.

On december 11 in the minneapolis tourney, at 119 in the consolation finals brenden lewis of lyons lost to steven howard of eureka 4-5. Not say that losing is acceptable but it was a great match

Austin Avelar is a junior and Nathan Deeds beat Dalton Synder in their only match to date. We will dual Hoxie again on Thursday.

A wrestler you might want to look into is 189 lb Augie Schmidt from Bluestem. He beat Thomas Durham, of Fredonia, 11-3 at Marion on 12/17/10.

Thomas has 4 losses: 1 to Tate Omli, 2 to Tyler Lowe, and 1 from a #1 ranked opponent from Oklahoma at the Kan-Okla Tourney.

No disrespect intended towards Thomas. In fact, just the opposite. The results of the Marion tourney show that he lost to Schmidt of Bluestem.
I have seen Thomas wrestle several times and he deserves ranking. Just looking through tourney results.

No Problem. Augie is a good wrestler too. The results are just backward from the Marion match. They will probably wrestle again at regionals.

Yeah, that should be a heck of a regional bracket w/ Thomas, Tyler, Colt and Augie. Looking forward to seeing who gets matched up.

Early in the year, it was posted that Brandon Ball would be attending and wrestling for Hoisington this Season. He was in the rankings @ 103 as late as 12/12/10.

Don't know why you have Smith Center over Goodland, Today at the Oberlin inv. Kearney Ne. finished first with 230.5 , Goodland finished second with 147.5, McCook Ne third not sure where Smith Center finished but I think that would put Goodland above Smith Center.

Johnson lost to mertins of valley center and sharpe of Ft Scott at the 4A State Tourney. they were the 5th and 6th place finishers in the 4A 2010 State Tourney.

Didn't Johnson lose to Kevin Taylor this weekend at St. Marys by a score of 11 to 9?

Currently, I have Johnson at #7 in my rankings behind Taylor and ahead of Kyle Rice who just dropped out of the rankings to 8th. Those three should make for an interesting regional bracket at Silver Lake.

Add Hurla who is #1 ranked to that regional and I wouldn't like the match up that faces our regional first round.

Is Van Der Linden moving up to 130#. Anyone?

At this point Vander Linden is planning on staying at 130, which is what his older brother told me this past weekend.

Kordell Burch from Douglass will be at 112. Was not able to certify at 103.

Wuthnow 152# is a freshman. Wow, its hard to believe you lose 3-1 with the #1 kid, then beat the #2 kid with nearfall criteria and barely crack the top six.

In my rankings Wuthnow is 6th because he lost to Hewitt of Beloit in a dual during December. Also, Mark Smith dropped out of the rankings because of the loss. I think his current spot in my rankings is correct based on his body of work compared to the other 5 wrestlers ranked ahead of him.

I understand where ur comin from, but it depends on the wrestler. I know of two well known freshmen that won close matches the first of the year, and all the sudden they are ranked in the top 3. There are politics involved. As for being ranked 2 then getting beat, then falling out of the rankings, seems a little extreme. The only way to figure that is he was ranked to high to begin with. Favoritism should be left out, done strictly by criteria. And please don't tell me that it isn't happening.

3awrestling, I think you are allowing these rankings, which are just one persons opinion, to carry too much weight. I don't always agree with the individuals they have at every weight and every ranking, and so be it. I do enjoy the rankings and I appreciate the work that is put into the rankings. It will all come out in the wash in Febraury in Hays, so until then I encourage you to take the rankings for what they are.................only an opinion.

Wuthnow shouldn't be ranked, only because he said the word b@$ketball one time last year. I still haven't gotten over that, but at least he decided to do the right thing and wrestle.........I'm getting PO'd at him just thinking about that conversation......

I have to agree with Doug747. 7th would be the best rank for Nick. So much for the "freshman flying under the radar".

As for the conversation, it was nice of you to straighten the kid out. I think its one of his favorite wrestling memories, the "Eck Fishook"! Talks about it all the time.

The ref didn't see it, so I got away with it............A few more years, I probably will have to comeup with something better than the fishhook to keep him from kicking my tail........

I would say these 2 freshman have the criteria too stand behind there rankings. Well Known or not.
