Question about regionals

Yesterday in the Regional finals (I will not mention where or what class to protect the perception of those involved), I saw someone forfeit their finals match. This individual had wrestled the previous day and seemed just fine. No injuries were apparent and he looked healthy. However, no reason was given for the forfeit. He just didn't wrestle. Why is this allowed? Shouldn't you be required to compete in all Regional matches to be allowed to wrestle at State? I would imagine the individual that was knocked out of the finals by this wrestler would love the opportunity to wrestle for a Regional Championship, no matter what the likelihood of winning was. I just feel this is quitting in one tournament with no repercussions at the ensuing tournament. Has this come up often in the past? Thank you!

It could of been a number a reasons. The wrestler could of been sick or the wrestler may have injured himself in the semi finals match. With the 321A State tournament being moved a day earlier that gives a wrestler an even shorter time to recover from an injury. So why take a chance and make the injury any worse.

To the best of my knowledge there is nothing that can be done. The wrestler qualifies for State. There could be a very good reason that the wrestler didn't compete, so you can't penalize them for not competing. It could be shady, or it could be legitimate. Either way, the wrestler moves on to State.

I understand it very well could be legitimate. If it's not legitimate, I feel the coach or parents or whomever is involved are giving up on the kid and saying he wasn't good enough to win. I take the stance that you should always believe and try your hardest, regardless of what the possible outcomes might be. If the kid really was sick or injured, then I have no qualms with it. Just seemed really shady at the time.

What possible "shady" reason could there be for defaulting out of the championship match?

My son did the same thing his senior year. He had a back injury half way through the year, sailed through the second half, but had a brace and was susceptible to injury. So he decided to forfeit the last match at regionals to avoid the possibility of getting hurt. He ended up getting hurt at State in the second round so it didn't work out as planned, but that was the strategy.

I looked and saw that you posted sam son is 149 and whatever so I am sure you are talking about 160 at Ft. Scott. Why be so cripted? Ask Coach Albright. He was given full details as to what was going on. Why come on her and try to stir up ? Nothing shady, just doing what was best for my kid. Truth be told we felt fortunate to even be able to wrestle in regionals and make it to the finals. It was no disrespect to Sam he is an outstanding wrestler and we wrestled him in the finals at Eudora when we were healthy. Not sure what else to tell you, but that my wrestler was not in any position to compete at that moment. We had already secured a state qualification and did not want to risk injury and our opportunity to compete next weekend. It is the second time in 18 years that I have injury defaulted a match for one of my wrestlers.

I'm not trying to stir anything up. I'm just wondering if that is common that it happens. I wasn't being "cryptic." I just didn't want to bring any of the wrestler's names into this so they weren't harmed by it at all. If by doing that I pissed you off, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. The reason I questioned whether it was shady or not was due to comments made by other team's coaches regarding the strategy behind it. If he was injured or sick, then forfeiting was the right move. If it was to "not tip his cards" for State, that isn't right (this was mentioned by another coach). I'm not accusing anyone of doing anything shady so don't misinterpret this as that.

Good call Coach V on doing what is best for your kids. You gotta love how people tell you what is best for your team.

Some states do a true second or true 4th depending on the cutoff for qualifiers. Which means if you got 3rd or 5th and did not wrestle the 2nd or 4th place finisher you could challenge for that spot. Something to consider.

I actually agree with sporto on this one. There is nothing shady about defaulting. He earned his spot in the state bracket.

Have a local wrestler who has injury defaulted in a couple of recent tournament championship matches. So, what is the big deal. He beat his semifinal opponents to qualify for the championship match--he earned his place at state and he will be seeded at state based on his regional finishing spot.

We hear/see/read more crap/whinning/crying this time of year: 6a5a regionals unfair to 4A, unfair advantage to private schools (recruiting), lets wrestle a true 2nd place match to give someone another chance, so on so did so and so, refs all suck, etc, KSHSAA or our league officials do not like our school or our coach. Another one, get tired of hearing so and so bitchs all the time--about anything and everything!!

Let the kids wrestle. The cream will rise to the top. Ref calls even out 99.99 percent of the time---in 20 years remember only one really bad ref call that kept a wrestler from state (at a 3rd place regional match, losing opponent put his forearm in the leading opponent's mouth, ref called biting and disqualification. Both losing wrestler and his coach stated in writing that our kid was not biting. Went to appeal and KSHSAA backed the ref and disqualified our kid from wrestling at state. Now that was a robbery!!!

I am not concerned with what other coaches say. Not too much anyway. ha. My kid has been wrestling since he was 5 or so and is a senior. We wrestled around 50 matches this season. I don't really think we could hide our cards. At this point in the season, you really have the hand you are dealt. Make the best of it. Bluffing doesn't work. I am like a lot of people who read this thread. Say who you are or at least put your name and where you are from on your profile. I very seldom get fired up unless it is somebody questioning my kids. Their parents and I reserve that right.

Coach V keep up the good work! This weekend was the 1st time Pitt has seen PV in Aarons 4yrs of high school I seen a bunch of respectful very tough and well prepared kids wearing the green and black it was an exciting regional with the top 4 teams fighting for 1st.
