No Weight Allowance For High School Division?

No Weight Allowance For High School Division? - 02/27/12 10:59 PM

Can someone explain the reasoning behind no weight allowance for the high school division at the Kids State Tournament? These boys have had a 2lb. sometimes 3lb. weight allowance since after Christmas to allow for growth. Now in order to keep wrestling through kids state they have to make a weight that they haven't had to make since before Christmas? I know...they can bump up a weight but what is the logic in the kids rules being different than the KSHAA rules? Just asking because I'm curious. I thought we wanted to keep as many kids out through kids state. This seems like it could deter a few. The Park City Classic is giving a 3 lb allowance in the high school division.

The reasoning being the Kid's board voted to accept the High School weight classes. They did not vote to accept them and the 2lbs growth allowance that is allowed following their certification at a specific weight.

The boys as you say were never allowed a 3lbs growth allowance during the season, they were allowed a 2lbs growth allowance and probably an additional pound due to a competition the day preceding said weigh in, thus 2+1.

On the surface this seems cut and dry, however as USAWKS has adopted the NFHS rulebook for Kids, the weight classes should also include the 2lbs growth allowance provided they certified there in high school, but getting the KSHSAA member high schools to release that information to the Kid's clubs would be a complete waste of time and energy I'm afraid.

Perhaps the board just needs to take a look at adding a modification to have the high school weight classes to include a 2lbs weight allowance while weighing in.

Good question, but the only answer I have is that it is scratch weight for the Kids' HS division. You might try bumping up. Last year my son went 2-2 at State (103) and wrestled the Kids' HS division at 112 going 4-2 and finishing 5th. Sometimes wrestlers just need to be fat and happy to wrestle to their full potential:-]

Yes, sorry I worded that wrong. They are given a 2 lb. "growth allowance" and then the extra 1lb. due to competition the day prior. So where would I find information on who is on "The Board"? I do think they need to at least look at modifying the high school weight classes to include the 2 lb. weight allowance. I know it is not something that could be changed immediately but for future wrestlers possibly. That only makes sense.

I agree with you ReDPloyd! I like my wrestler fat and happy! I know it is a fact in high school but pulling weight is no fun.

We have the solution right here!!! Even if you give the 2lbs you will find most of them don't make weight due to the lack of activity from high school to club.

I think that they should have to make scratch weight. Once these kids get to national tournaments or some even go to college and wrestle they have to make scratch weight. I think that they should keep the rules the same to prepare the kids for the future. If you don't want to make a weight there is always another weight above it unless you are a heavyweight. With my experience most kids don't cut weight for the kids circuit anyways. They would rather be fat and sassy. I know me and my friends did haha

By the first of February most of the high school wrestlers are so done with watching their weight. The day after state my boy wanted nothing more than a triple baconator! And he was 138, or 140, or 141, depending what day of the tourney it is! I think he is pushing 145 right now.

Last year after the Friday night weigh-ins at State, I happily told my son it would be the last time in his life that he would weigh 106. To no surprise, he smiled at me and didn't argue one bit.

If it is a high school division then kids should be able to wrestle just like how high school was, allowance and all
