St. Francis Wrestling - 02/28/12 03:22 PM

I just saw on the CJ Online prep forum that this is the first time since 1936 that they haven't had a state placer? That's quite a run.

Yes I believe that is correct. I had previously brought that up last season that they had continued their run of 74 years straight, but sadly they couldn't make it 75 years. I think this is a bigger story than when Hoxie had no state qualifers in 2007.

Here is the link to the St. Francis state placers it is an impressive list.

So who has longest streak now? I know Beloit has had at least 1 state placer every year starting in 1972, 41 consecutive state tournaments. The program was started in 1968.

I'd say they have one of the best claims, but I'd think Kapaun Mt. Carmel in Wichita or Ark City could also have a stake in the longest current streak of state placers.

Does anybody have an idea of what the streaks are like at those schools or any others that might be longer than Beloit's?

Garden City started their streak in 1973. 40 straight years. Impressive.

Ark City did not have a State Champion in 2004, 1987, 1981? (I think)or this year.

They are just talking state placers.

I'd be especially curious where Norton, Emporia, and Ark City stand with state placers. There may be others too?

Sorry, need to pay more attention. My guess would be the 67 or 68, since a placer. I'll look on the board tonight at practice, and get placers and State Champions at the same time.

Re: St. Francis Wrestling - 03/01/12 08:41 PM

I tried to look up Ark City stats but it required too much work and I started chasing other squirrels. I wrestled for Dodge City so thats why I looked up Garden City. They beat us consistently while I was in school. Emporia was good then too. I think the best I wrestled though, was Drake out of Andover. He tied me in knots and I don't think I messed up his hair at the Newton tourney.

Re: St. Francis Wrestling - 03/01/12 08:46 PM

According to Emporia's high school website, they did not place anyone in 1990. Otherwise they had placed someone every year since 1969 with their 1st state placer in 1961. Can anyone from Emporia verify?

Thankyou Mr. Mann! Anyone know what Hoxie's streak was before 2007?

Thanks Beeson. We now have the mark to beat and it might be hard to top. Who has a streak that dates back further than Ark City?

I'm really thinking Kapaun Mt. Carmel might be a contender in this but I can't find any info on their website. Can someone with connections to Kapaun's program look into this?

How about some schools out west like Oberlin, Colby, or Scott City? What about some eastern schools like Lawrence, Manhattan, Columbus, Chanute, or any of the older Kansas City programs?

Had a feeling Ark City would be up there especially with the most team titles. Probably gonna be the longest current streak. This is interesting, and educational.

Re: St. Francis Wrestling - 03/02/12 12:09 PM

How about this stat: brought to my attention by reporter David Steinle.

Norton did not have a state finalist this year. He told me this was the first time in 17 years that Norton did not have a state finalist. I was not aware of this long run of having a finalist. So I went back and checked Norton's long list of State Placers and was amazed what I found.

Consecutive Years of State Finalist:

1995-2011 (17 Straight Years)
1990-1992 (3 years)
1965-1986 (22 Years in a Row. Amazing !)
1957-1962 (6 years in a Row.)
1942-1949 (8 years)

Can any School claim to beat the 22 year run of State Finalist by the Bluejays under Hall of Fame Coach Jake Durham's leadership.

Re: St. Francis Wrestling - 03/02/12 01:07 PM

The Colby streak is not going to put us anywhere near the top. Colby had a good streak going from 1947-1982 but did not have a placer in 1983. We started another little streak in 1984 that came to an end in 1989 when no Colby wrestlers made the medal stand. So, Colby's current streak is:

1990-Present.

Coach,
St. Francis had a state finalist from 1937-1960 (23) and 1962-1988 (26).

I had a feeling that the "Old NWKL Schools" would have other schools with similar streaks.

What about Oberlin, Hoxie, Goodland ? Come on Coaches.

Re: St. Francis Wrestling - 03/02/12 03:00 PM

Concordia's first state placer was in 1974. The program wasn't started until the 1965-66 school year. Beginning in 74 we have had a state placer every year with the exception of 1984, and yes, I was the coach.
