Ark has a bunch I'm sure, I'm guessing Hoxie, Goodland, and St. Francis have a few themselves

KMC or Ark City? I would think both would be in the top 5.

Norton has to be right up there with Ark City, just guessing. They have had a ton.

Re: High school with Most state champions - 01/03/13 06:23 PM

As of 2001 St. Francis had the most with 99. Norton and Ark City both had in the 70's. I don't have the 2002-2012 champions in my spreadsheet...

I am not sure, but i think the Jenkins, and Gabel's were the last state champs St Fracis has had. Or at least I dont remember any since then. Still 99 pretty good number. I wonder where Norton is at now, I know they have a a few since then, as well as Hoxie.

Re: High school with Most state champions - 01/04/13 04:03 PM

St. Francis - that is impressive.

Chris Richard & Alan Wahrman were my coaches my sophomore year of high school. I was pretty dumd (slightly moreso th an now) at that age and didn't realize how good they actually were. This list explains why I left practices everyday wth my face's impression spread all over the mats.

I remember Coach Wahrman telling me one time that he didn't even letter until I think his Junior year because he couldn't make varsity until then.

What makes AC and KMC a little more impressive is that they both started wrestling in the 60's...30 years behind the others.

What doesn't is that they added a second, third and finally a fourth classification to water down the title of State Champion. Before 1966 you were really a state champion, since then, with the exception of the two years KSHSAA hosted a grand state, wrestlers are co state champions.

Good Point. I am curious how many schools were wrestling back in the 30's when there was just one class. Was there more or less schools in that one class than there is now in just one of the classes? Anybody want to do a little research?

As one who was in high school in 1954-57 I can tell you that there were fewer schools wrestling than there now is in any one of the classes.

I think that adds a little to the impressivness then.

I agree.

It would be nice to see that data. How many schools each year offered wrestling. I don't know where to look to find that information. KSHSAA?

Colby currently has 59 state champions. I was curious so I went down and counted the photos in the hallway by our gym.

Re: High school with Most state champions - 01/09/13 06:11 PM

These list are very impressive but I have one clarification question...Are these numbers counting the individuals or the actual state title? I see many multi-time state champions and wasn't sure what these numbers were truly expressing...other that a tradition of excellence.

Example: Colby has 59 state champions...is that 59 individuals who have won state, or 59 titles won by their wrestlers?

I know I could just count the names on the list, but for some of these schools I would need an abacus.

Probably an overthought on my part and a dumb question, but I'm just dumb enough to ask.
