....John Cook of Hays High, who was unbeaten at 171, wrestled up 2 weights - to 215 at Regionals. Cook is unbeated no more, in fact he took 3rd place at his 5A regional. This seems odd to me. I realize Romero Cotton of Hutch is also in the 171# class. Can anyone help me out?

From Holliday Hays daily newspaper:

"On top of that, Hafliger said the Indians' lineup might be forced to undergo changes at the last minute.

"We may still do some lineup juggling Saturday morning, we'll just have to wait and see," Hafliger said.

Unbeaten senior 171-pounder Jon Cook has been struggling to make weight as of late as he goes into the regional with a 23-0 record. If he would move up to 189, that would push senior Danny Smyl to 215, a position he wrestled toward the end of the season while earning a 27-9 record. Smyl is ranked No. 5 at 189.

"We are in a very tough regional with a lot of good teams, and it's difficult not knowing what's going to happen," Hafliger said. "The way it's looking, we'll probably have a lot of people sitting in those four or five spots."

Cook is ranked No. 4 at 171 pounds and has a handful of tournament titles under his belt this season. Smyl, a two-time state qualifier at 189 pounds, spent two weeks wrestling at 215."

same way with jake tech of abilene he was at 189 where he dominated most of the competition and now he is at 215.... but he did make it to state but as a four seed why not stay at 189 at go for a 1 or 2 seed???

I heard that Tech was bumped up to heavyweight for a dual win which broke his certification. This would dq him from wrestling at 189 for the rest of the year. Too bad.

Alpha75 is right, in our dual against chapman he bumped to heavyweight because the coach knew that the national rule was that you could bump two weights, later on he got a call and was informed that the state of kansas had passed a one weight rule. therefore tech broke his certification forcing him to wrestle up a weight at regionals

Cook did look like a very big 171 pounder and probably did have quite a time cutting to that weight. But he made it all year. Now he bumps up 2 weight classes. 215 is different from 171. Now Cook will have to use a different style against bigger, stronger competition. Again, I'm uninformed on all of the circumstances, but he only had to make weight for another week. Good luck to Cook, but it looks like a bad move to me.

Cook would have broken his certification at 171 when he wrestled a couple of times during the season at 215.

No kidding...that would have been like shooting fish in a barrell. 189 was pretty sad looking overall at Baldwin. I thought you would end up in the finals though after Durkin took the worst shot in the history of the world on you at the start of the semifinal match though!

Yeah that wasn't really a shot but more like a belly flop, and so did I. I had been told the legs would be coming but I just couldn't clear em...but not much I can do or say about it but at least Kober beat him

If Cook from Hayes did in fact move from 171 to 215. He would be 4-1 on the bracket not 27-1. I do not think you can carry your record up in weight. You can carry your wins down I think. Not sure what the Kansas Rule on that one is.

Record should probably read at weight currently wrestling or qualified at. There is really no hard and fast rule on this as far as I know. The only place that record usually carries much merit at all is in a seeding meeting, and then only if no other criteria is met. Head to head is usually ahead of record.
