Sanjaa Named EIWA Wrestler of the Week

Junior Ganbayar Sanjaa, ranked No. 10 in the country at 149 lbs., has been named the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Wrestler of the Week.

Sanjaa went 2-0 last week as the No. 11 Eagles wrestled at No. 9 Rutgers and against Maryland. He earned his biggest win of the season Wednesday against the Scarlet Knights, post a 2-0 victory over No. 4 Mario Mason. Sanjaa took a 1-0 lead in the second period with an escape point and then rode Mason out for the entire third period to secure the victory. Sanjaa returned to the mat on Sunday and earned an 8-4 decision over Maryland’s Ben Dorsay.

The two wins have improved Sanjaa to 20-3 on the year. The junior has won each of his last 10 matches and has defeated two top 10 opponents over the course of his last four. Sanjaa has also recorded nine bonus point victories with five falls, two technical falls and two major decisions.

Sanjaa is the first Eagle to be named the EIWA Wrestler of the Week this season. Teammate Steve Fittery, currently ranked No. 1 at 157 lbs., earned the honor twice last season while Volunteer Assistant Coach Kyle Borshoff ’10 was named the wrestler of the week once during the 2008-09 season. Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov ’06 was the first Eagle to garner the award during the 2004-05 season.
