Headbanger:

My kid takes a shot of Jack and a beer back 10 minutes before each match. The finals are usually pretty funny to watch.

Darn, someone beat me to the funny....

I use to drink a pot of coffee, take a sleeve of NoDoz, and feel my hair grow. I felt like Tweek from South Park.

A few years ago my kid drank an energy drink and it triggered an asthma attack during one of his matches. He was rushed to the hospital in the ambulance and the doctor told us that the drink is what caused the attack.

hooked, it is very interesting that the Dr. said this. I am by no means a medical expert and have no medical training whatsoever aside from basic CRP. However I have done some research based on your post. From everything I have read, it appears that Caffeine is often used to treat asthma. However as you said this was a few years back, the drink he consumed may have contained Ephedra which has since been banned by the FDA. Ephedra has been known to cause asthma attacks so it may be indeed that your son consumed this. Current energy drinks however do not contain this product anymore.

One thing I would mention, and I am in no way blaming you for what happened to your child. But people especially kids who have had asthma attacks prior to, or have a history in their families should be very cautious about the stimulants and depressants they consume, this type of shock to the respiratory and blood system can defiantly cause attacks.

All stimulants are metabolized by the body the same. The difference is the potency and the half life of the stimulant. Ephedra at a dosage of 20mgs will give you the same effect as caffine at 300 to 400 mgs, but the half life is twice as long. So any stimulant at a high dose is potentialy dangerous.

ive also heard that many energy drinks can be addictive. I dont know if thats a bad thing but, some energy drinks contain a substance kind of like speed. This could be a bad thing..buy why would they sell it for ANYBODY to drink if its really that harmful? Maybe you should consult a doctor or something to see if it is alright for you kid to drink energy drinks...DOCTORS KNOW EVERYTHING!

Energy drinks or their equivalent have been around since the beginning of wrestling. Anyone remember the honey shot or other things that you would do to increase energy? If used in moderation and along with proper nutrition I don't think they hurt any more than a candy bar and soda, except they have more vitamin and nutritional benefit. I know I swear by Advocares’ Spark, enough so that I purchased a dealership just to purchase for me and my family to get a discount. I have sold to a few individuals when they ask, but usually at my cost, not at profit. I also agree with the mental focus being important and helping. Does this one product or method work with everyone? Of course not. Nevertheless, for us, Spark gives a spark. It is kind of amazing though that people talk about caffeine and let their kids drink soda all day at a tournament. The truth is that caffeine on it’s own is a depressant and there is a comedown after usage. The use of the product has to coincide with appropriate timing or the effects can be detrimental.

Here is a link with some interesting facts about caffeine, a central nerverous system stimulant, as it relates to sports performance. http://www.topendsports.com/nutrition/coffee.htm
