My reading of the rule modifications for 2007-08 shows that the 12U 60 class has been eliminated. It is a shame to force light weight wrestlers out of the sport. It is also wrong to state maximum weight differentials of age groups in pounds rather than percentage of weight.I will never let my son wrestle someone who is 39 percent heavier. ( 12U maximum allowable weght difference 25 pounds)

If hope thats not correct it would be unfare to the lighter kids to have to wrestle kids who out weugh them by that much. The info sheet on the event calender still list 12 n under 60 lb so hope they still have it. I totally agree with you Kevin on it should be % rather than total weight.Colin has yet to wrestle anyone his size this year 10 under 52 lbs. Most kids have been 64 or even 68 needless to say he has struggled

I have been noticing that some tournament fliers have 60 listed for the lightest weight and others have 64 as the lightest weight. I know if you go to the kids division page, and look at the weight chart, 64 is indeed the lightest weight for 12 and under.I just hope that each town hosting subs is aware of the rule change. That could create a big mess.

I hope someone gets this figured out before subs. it is bad enough some of these kids give up 2 years now they have to give up weight also.

i hope they change the state page cause it still has 12u 60# witch there should be. I know of 4 kids that still think there is a 60# weight class for state, we were having this discussion at salina. I don't know about the rest of the 60# kids.(12)
if they were going to change the weight class they should change the age back to August 1st

I fully understand your concern about giving up weight, especially at the lighter weight classes where four pounds likely makes a difference. I think that you might be a little surprised at how many kids give up the same amount of weight at other weight classes too. Some kids just don't seem to want to cooperate, and mine is one of them. I am talking about kids that don't weigh much over a weight class and their parents choose to wrestle them at the next weight class up. I am sure (actually I know) that other parents/wrestlers work to knock off a couple of pounds every week to make the next weight class down. By time they hit the mat, four pounds difference is not a stretch at all. The one difference is that come post season, these wrestlers and their parents have the opportunity to work off that extra pound to get to that lower weight class if they choose to do so.

First of all YES, I have a child who wrestles this weight. If I didn't I would probably be like most people and not notice that this weight class was quietly eliminated. My question is why? I realize that this weight class will never fill a 16 man bracket, but is that any reason to eliminate it. Could it be that there is a person or persons who believe that this is a weak class where the only requirement to place at state is to make weight. In many years it is true that making weight is enough. Here are the number of wrestlers at 12 and under 60 lbs. for last 9 years:
2007 6
2006 2
2005 3
2004 2
2003 7
2002 9
2001 2
2000 5
1999 6 placers at state (no other records available)

Well mabey since this is such a small weight group they are just small kids and not good wrestlers.

I don't want to bring up specific names but here are some accomplishments of former 12 and under 60lbs

2007 5th at state in 4A currently ranked 2nd
2008 currently ranked 3rd at 6A
2006 4th at state in 4A currently ranked 4th
2006 2nd at state in 5A 2007 5th at state in 5A
2006 5th at state in 321A

Who wants to be the one to tell these wrestlers that this weight class should be eliminated.

I realize that the number of wrestlers in this class is small and will be lucky to fill out an eight man bracket, but when this class is eliminated however many 60lb kids there are will be how many kids are denied the chance to go to state. If they can't overcome the weight difference they will be eliminated at subs or dictrics. If we happen to have 4 studs that weigh 59lb there could be 4 64lb kids eliminated that would have been at state. There is also the possibility that there is an 11 year old that weighs 55lbs and can't gain weight no matter what he tries. This kid is now trying to compete at the state level with kids that outweigh him by over 2 weight classes. To his credit I have never heard this kid or his father use weight as an excuse for a loss to a heavier kid. I also know that there is a fairly large group of light kids that will be coming up in the next couple of years.

I apologize for the length of this post, but I feel that more thought and research was put into this post than was put into the decision to eliminate this weight class.

Thanks for reading this far,

Lin

i know of 10 12u 60# kids right now 5 were listed at mill valley, i think they are all from KS.
that is not counting the west side of KS. i think there are 3 or 4 kids down by Wichita.
that does not account for the few that will drop a couple pounds

I think at the very the least the person or persons who made this decession should step up and explain how and why this was done

I am not sure there is anything that could re-instate 12/60 this year! Perhaps Mr. Salyer will chime in!!
