Why Morning Practices Are Counter-Productive:

1. High school kids need a lot of sleep. Especially during an athletic season.

2. Unlike the college teams, many of which have put the brakes on the morning workouts themselves, the high school teams consist of kids who have class from 7 am till 3 pm, leaving no time during the day for homework or napping. I know my kids get a ridiculous amount of homework many nights so are already up late as it is. 6 am - 10 pm days are not uncommon due to this heavy homework load, on top of the daily grind and high school practices.

3. Many high school wrestlers are watching their weight and not eating right anyway, likely starving many days, so their ability to recover is compromised as it is, without being sleep deprived.

4. Many morning workouts consist of conditioning, and instead of splitting the workouts up, it is better to do the conditioning at the tail end of the afternoon wrestling practice as it'll give kids a higher level of conditioning anyway.

5. The myth is that it will make these kids tough, when in reality, the morning workout regimen just wears these kids down, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Then, by the end of the year, the kids hate wrestling and just wanted to be over...(and so does the exhausted coach) not a good way to end the season.

Good luck this season!
