Will there be any practices? Also what will the singlet look like for the fourth team and when will we know teams?

I just got off of the phone with the director of Middle School Duals and he cannot let a fourth team in. He has turned away six teams including one from Iowa this year. In the past they have ALWAYS wanted more teams. The popularity of this event is obvious right here in Kansas as we have over 130 kids applying for 75 spots. I am going to work HARD today to narrow this list down to 75. The worst thing about this job is telling a wrestler who wants to go that we cannot fit him in. I apologize in advance as I know there will be some feelings hurt.

Watch this board this weekend or Monday, and we 'll be putting together some wichita area practices for next week......

Practice (for middle school duals and elementary school duals teams) will be at Andover Central on Monday and Thursday, and at Andale on Tuesday. All practices will be from 6:30-8:00 pm.

Anyone on those teams, willing to drive to the Wichita area for practice, is welcome.

I believe Will Cokeley will be posting the rest of the weights sometime today or tomorrow, so keep checking back to see if you are on the teams.

I just got an e-mail stating they will be held at St. James Academy and to e-mail Eric Akin at eakin@kc.rr.com for a schedule of times. I can set up several in the topeka area if needed. I have a few locations and can be flexible with times if needed.

Great turnout tonight at Andover Central HS. 22 middle schoolers, and 10 elementary school dualers.

We will be having Tuesday's practice at Andover Central, NOT Andale. Repeat, no practice at Andale, but it will be, again, at Andover Central on Tuesday night.

Thursday's practice will also be at Andover Central.

Practice times are 6:30-8:00 PM

Still working on next week's practice schedule, probably at Derby.

East Kansas Wrestling Club will be holding practices this week Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday workouts will be coached by Travis Phippen and Thursday workouts will be coached by Eric Akin. We will be getting into some freestyle material this week because we have a tournament this weekend. However, practices will be mostly takedown drills as usual and lots of hard wrestling on the feet. Wrestlers training for folkstyle can partner together and drill folkstyle while others are drilling freestyle, etc.

Times for Tuesday and Thursday are the following:

5:30pm to 7pm Freshmen - Seniors

7pm to 8:30pm 8th grade and under

East Kansas Freestyle members will continue with this schedule until June 4th. We will provide a schedule of tournaments that our team and staff will attend. This week and next week you can get information at practice regarding how to sign up for freestlye membership if you want to continue training with us through the Spring and Summer.

I just got an email from the director of the duals. They had a team scratch and since we have three teams entered he gave us first shot at putting in a fourth. I said YES! This will give us the ability to get nearly all of the 8th graders on a spot but we are going to need some more to fill in. Keep your eye on the board for updates.

This is a great opportunity to spend some time with some very good coaches and wrestlers, and to experience the "dual team" format. Ask anyone that was on any of the teams last year, be it the first team or the 3rd or 4th team, and they'll tell you it was a fun experience. Being around other great wrestlers raises the level of all around them and seems to get the best out of the kids. And they love the fiery young coaches that we always have. (take that as a compliment Collins and Vanderlinden)

Just to revisit some timelines, we will meet at Lawrence KS at around 9:00 am on Friday April 17th, and leave from there in the team vans to head to Iowa for weighins.

He sure would have been my choice.

What about Wilson at 171, second at state at 14U 165, I believe the only 8th grader on the podium at that wieght, not on 1st team?

Bryant Guillen was the choice at 145 probably because he placed 4th in state. My son did very well this year.

Looks like Guillen took 4th at 14U 150. Bracket was won by Matt Reed, who tech falled Guillen in the semis. I believe you are a pretty tough cookie if you keep Matt Reed from pinning you. Matt Reed beat a very good Sam Son in the finals. Guillen lost to a 4A state qualifier, Cole Cannon, by one point for 3rd place.

I don't know the guys that Rodd lost to at state, but that doesn't mean anything. I didn't see Eggers as state qualifier in high school. I didn't see Baca there either.

I would guess the criteria is that Guillen is a placer at a higher weight class in the same age group.

Wouldnt the same logic apply for 171? Spencer Wilson 2nd placer at 165 and Brandon Solmans 6th place 175.

Meeting at Cokeley's car lot, can't recall the address off hand, in Lawrence, at 9:00 am on Friday April 17th.

Will is going to keep you posted on that stuff as we get closer.

The logic is different, as Salmans is heavier but placed lower, Wilson is lighter but placed higher.

Have these two met at all on the mat? Any common opponents? Help me out so we can make sure the right guy gets put on the 1st team.

And the Wichita area middle school duals practices will be at Andover Central again next week. We will practice Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 6:30-8:00. Tentatively, we will meet somewhere in Wichita Friday morning around 6:30 am to leave for Lawrence. If your middle school dualer needs a ride from Wichita to Lawrence, please get me their names so that we can get an idea of how many vehicles we need to take to Lawrence to get everyone up there. If someone needs to just stay the night Thursday night after practice, and leave with us Friday morning, let me know that also. From Lawrence, the teams will ride in vans to Iowa.

Yes, A means alternate. We have took 15 alternates last year and got them all into the starting line up and into the alternate tournament. It is all great mat time.

The Southeast Kansas connection will be meeting in Burlington at 6:45 a.m. We will have wrestlers from Caney, Cherryvale, Chanute, Fredonia and Emporia meeting at different spots along the trail to get to Lawrence shortly around 8:15 a.m. so we can help Will with registration.

We have room for 1 more wrestler. Contact Doug Vander Linden at 620-364-2054 if you fit into these travel plans.

We will leave from Newman university parking lot that is just west of the school up against kellogg hiway at 6:30 am on Friday.

All middle school kids that are on ANY of the KansasTeams shouldhave received an email from Will Cokeley showing what forms, money, etc that he is still lacking from you. Ifyou have not received this, get ahold of him, unless you already know what forms or money you lack givng him. You can send it with your kid to give to Will at the morning meeting at Lawrence. The duals director will not let a kid participate without ALL of the required documentation.
