Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/23/09 02:33 AM

Yes, if 3rd did not wrestle 2nd in an earlier round of the tournament then he may challenge 2nd. Winner will get 2nd loser gets 3rd. All challenge matches will be wrestled at the conclusion of finals or at least 30 minutes after the wrestler's last match.

Nice start on developing Middle School Duals!
Appreciate the 2nd place opportunity as well for these young men.

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/23/09 01:03 PM

Why not allow them to challenge for fourth also if they haven't wrestled!! Division II does this at Regionals I know --

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/23/09 01:23 PM

I don't know if we allowed 5th wrestle 4th we would need to step back and evaluate that and it might take 3 years or more to do that study.

As for this tourny I think it's the best idea to come out of kansas in a long time.

Wow. A fantastic way to strengthen our foundation of future high school wrestlers! All Middle Schoolers better circle that March 14th date! What a great experience it will be to EARN your way on the national teams. The MS Duals have officially been elevated along side the SB, Cadet and Juniors!

I applaud Will and Smokey Valley High School!

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/23/09 07:01 PM

is this not the same weekend as sub-district
Posted By: badbo

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/23/09 08:20 PM

It's on Sunday. Subs is on Saturday and yes they would be the same weekend. 6U state is on the same weekend as a qualifier as was the KS hardluck tournamment Mark Stanley put on I believe it was on the same weekend as Districts last year. More opportunities for kids to wrestle is a good thing.

Any chance sub-district weigh ins will count towards the MS tourney?

The weight classes are different than those utilized by our subs. We are discussing possible satellite weigh-ins at the subs to be conducted that eveing, the same time as the on-site weigh in. We will have to have cooperation from the sub district wrestling tournament directors. We want the weigh-ins to be fully credible but yet convenient.

I have a notebook on my desk, MSND Ideas for Improvement!, which I would love to fill with ideas so please email me, post or pm me.

Thanks!

Will,

This is a great idea. Let me know what you need and we will help. I thought for sure you would use this event to try out the matside weigh in concept so we could learn from it. I also support the idea of remote weigh in sites.

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/25/09 03:33 AM

Honestly, I hate the wrestle back but it is the only way to determine who should be on what team.

When you go to the Tulsa Nationals and they make this HUGE deal out of being in the finals. Then you lose by 1 or in OT and 30 minutes later you have to wrestle a guy who finished 3rd some time before that. He is excited and the runner up is down and out. I would venture to say that 2nd loses 75% of the time. Psychologically it is not a level playing field. If nothing else it is a character builder!

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/25/09 09:59 AM

I think the challenge for 2nd is a good way to give you atrue 2nd place. At Tulsa all the finals for each weight are wrestled at the same time, they dont start the next weight until the previous weight class finish....Having said that,I think challenge backs are good if you re not in them.

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/27/09 12:29 PM

I totally agree with one exception, I think the percentage from the psychological factor could be higher. I don't think I ever coached a kid that was challenged for 2nd that one, maybe once, and I know all but one kid won the challenge for 2nd.

All we out here ask is that you have a weigh in out here so it is convenient to the hotbed of middle school wrestling in kansas.

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/28/09 12:33 AM

psycologoically ,it has to take all you ve got to fend off a challenge for 2nd,it has to be a character builder more than I can imagine....BUT,,,,,, its kinda like an old Jerry Clower coon huntin story I once heard that I refer to quite often in life...it goes something like this,a city sleeker and a couple of country boys coon huntin with their dogs tree a coon, one of the country boys climbs the tree to knock the coon out to 10 or 12 dogs waiting below to tear the coon to shreads.......after the intailing fight and out come, the country boy climbs down...to which the city sleeker replies, dont you think that was a little bit of an over match, the coon dint have a chance,to which the country boy replies.....nope.........not at all,the coon had the option of whoopin all those dogs and walkin off if he wanted to...............so youve always got the option,it just kinda comes down to intestinal fortitude........or character...what ever you wish to call it...... the few challenges for 2nd that Ive been involed with have been about 50/50,but they re tough.....

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/28/09 05:13 PM

A few questions, will team scores be kept? Awards given out if they do? Can you enter more than one kid per weight? If so how many are you allowed?
Posted By: Cokeley

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/28/09 08:03 PM

No team scores. The more in the weight the merrier! There will be NO team limitations. This is an open invitation to ALL Kansas residents who are enrolled in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade and who will NOT be turning 16 during the calendar year 2010

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 04/29/09 07:17 PM

I think this qualifying tournament is a great idea. Just wondering, even though middle school duals were just wrestled, does anyone know where they will be held next year? Also, am wondering about the cost,(rough idea). Know that some of the cost may depend on next year's tournament location. Also know that my son may not qualify, but it's never too early to start planning. Thanks.

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 09/30/09 04:18 PM

The theme for the 2010 Middle School National Duals for our Kansas teams will be "Ancient Warriors"

Gladiators
Barbarians
Trojans
Spartans

Those will be the four team names. BlueChip is working on the T-shirt, short, and singlet designs.

Proceeds from the MS State tournament will be split with the host club. Those proceeds plus the $2000 budgeted to Middle School Duals by the USAWKS Kids Executive Board will be used to offset costs. I hope this will lower the cost to participate to $200 per wrestler or less. Last year it was $275.

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 09/30/09 06:37 PM

Will,

As stated earlier, I think this is a great idea. The kids love the dual team concept and I think this will help identify the top kids.

Having said that, if there is enough interest for a 5th or 6th team are we going to keep those options available? I know in the past you have taken all comers and I absolutely applaud that.

Some kids from our club have told me that the Middle School duals were the best experience they have had. I hope that we can keep the options open to increase the participation and not use the tournament to limit participation for the duals.

Thanks.

Great Idea Will,
You can beat Lane will be there to wrestle for the top spot. He sure was looking forward to the national duels last year. His foot has healed just fine, and he's ready to go.

Now that we are a couple of months into the season it is time to start speculating about these brackets. If you know of some competitors start listing them or emailing their credentials to ksmsranker@gmail.com.

The Danville date is the same as Kids State here in Kansas according to the calendar.

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 12/29/09 04:05 AM

I assume Team Kansas will be attending the national duals in Indianola. From what I heard everyone had a blast. Will these teams be part of the group attending the Ohio TOC dual? Now that would be a pretty neat experience too!!

Re: First Ever!!!! Kansas MS State Championship - 12/29/09 06:30 PM

Our plan is to have a satellite Weigh In at each sub across the state. This will make it easier for kids to make weight and not have to be on the road all night inorder to weight in on Sunday morning.
