Who's Tough? - 01/06/10 05:49 PM

Well the Season is up and rolling now, the weights shakin down, What are the tough classes 10u,12u,8u,6u? What are the tough weights? What are the best matches to catch? Any big suprises?

Re: Who's Tough? - 01/06/10 06:47 PM

Think a good match that might occur several times throughout the year will be Dylan Newton-Jackson Hartley at 8 under 80.

Re: Who's Tough? - 01/06/10 07:11 PM

I am a big fan of a lot of the kids in the 12 and under 80-84 range. I don't know about the rest of the state and can only base my opinions on what I see week in and week out. I think there are 6 or 7 state qualifiers scrapping it out every week in the wichita area. 10 and under 67 has a ton of talent in it also. I could go on and on but won't because I am borderline obsessed with this stuff.

Re: Who's Tough? - 01/06/10 08:50 PM

This Bracket Happened Saturday in Cimarron.
10U 85
1. Pedro Ordonez Hugoton (3rd place finisher at state)
2.Ryan Nava Ulysses (state champion)
3.Quinton Lapointe SWG (state runner-up)
4.Joshua Seabolt Gray County (state champion)

Re: Who's Tough? - 01/06/10 09:05 PM

Whatever age/weight my kids are in always seems tough. This year 12/under 76 and 8/under 52. At 12/under 76, you will have Cole Moses, Tyler Price, Logan Terrill, Marc Guerrero, Prieto from Greater Gold is an absolute stud, then theres Dipman,Burnett, Garcia, Kasitz & hopefully Alex Cavanaugh will be in the mix too. Anyone I left out forgive me, but this is a tough one. Whoever wins Distrcit 2 will definately earn it. By my count theres at least 7 state champs out of the above mentioned.

Seabolt is at 85? He must have grown a bunch over the summer!!
Posted By: TCB75

Re: Who's Tough? - 01/07/10 12:32 AM

10u 64 was a great bracket last Saturday at the JOCO Classic. Tate Steele and Connor Ward had an excellent match with Ward winning for the first time over Steele 2-0. Parenti won over Ward 3-1 in the finals and it was a great match as well!

In 10u 67, Hunter Skeens looks tough this year, I believe he was a state placer last year.

Re: Who's Tough? - 01/07/10 04:56 AM

how bout nate fowler at 10 AND UNDER HWT AT USJOC. that was incredible
Posted By: BLT

Re: Who's Tough? - 01/07/10 05:20 AM

Ya
The JOC 10U outstanding wrestler was from Kansas.
Too bad Nate can't wrestle in Kansas cause he's too big.
This young man is over 5 feet tall and 190 pounds. That's too big for Ks state competition.
He toed the line in OK with no fear and he was pinning 240 pound kids in the 1st period.

Awesome Job Nate!!!

Re: Who's Tough? - 01/07/10 08:30 PM

10u 82 looks tough, dakota motter (won JOC, multi state placer), brandon mlekus (multi state champ, and national placer), nick lucas, (multi state placer), jalin harper is a stud, cal bloomfield (last year 8u state champ), drogemeier (sp) rossville, (state placer), just to name a few from district 1 & 2.

I don't think Parker Howell will see 75 ever again. Going 82 at Tulsa, but hey Dad life is hard enough when you're a small guy without your supporters calling you a midget. Just kidding.

Kent, I know Josiah Seaton & Nick Frakes are there & they are in our district. I would coordinate with them to try and hit same tournaments otherwise your going to be giving up 10-15 lbs. every week or exibitions with 12/unders.

Patrick,

Never thought of you as the "monkey man", just the gentleman with the jammin' platyrrhine primate avatar. Sorry, but I did have to chuckle when I read this.

Crowdad,

Seaton has wrestled with Bonner Springs and Frakes with the Jr Vikings out of Topeka.

Re: Who's Tough? - 01/15/10 04:07 AM

Brycen is a BEAST!
He is about 25-0 this season and has only had 15 points scored on him this year and has already won 4 "National" tournaments this season. He is the #1 ranked wrestler in the WOW series.
BUT, with all that being said he is the most level headed "Little Kid" out there...
He walks on to the mat thinking that every kid can beat him!
And this weekend it just might happen...
Win or Lose....
Brycen is the BEST wrestler I know...

Good Luck at Tulsa Brycen!

Well there are several tough kids in sek, don't have time to name them all. I have seen several great matches already at the 10u 61 lb group. There are a couple of tough kids in the 10u 73 & 76 lb classes from the southeast. There is a couple tough kids at 8u 88 and 95 lb class as well. Just thought i would stand up for the tough kids in SEK cant wait to see all those listed above.

If you move up to 10U 110 there is a group up there like Christensen, Weidl and Palic that are all good wrestlers.

Hicks is wrestling up he is actually 8u 95 Quintin is from Clearwater and has cleaned up everyone he wrestled in 8u and is now dominating the 10u @ 95. He will probably be in the 8u for state and unless someone steps up he will take it.

Tyler Flood from Louisburg (10U-67) looks like he is building some momentum in the south half of D1.

14U 75 lbs is hard to find. Josiah Seaton has tried the Missouri side only to show up and have no matches for either of the Lee's Summit tournaments. He's going to try Salina and then the KCWC tournament. Hopefully he can get some matches there.

Re: Who's Tough? - 01/26/10 05:36 AM

I have watched som of these kids at the same weight for the past two years or better and don't understand how these kide don't grom My kids jump about 8-12lbs per year and about 3-5" height and these kids stay the same. If coaches are trying to keep the kids at one weight with normal groth sizes how can we have the same weight. If you grow and the weight stays the same then your muscle is not growing in proportion.
Posted By: Allie

Re: Who's Tough? - 01/26/10 05:02 PM

Some of us just have "little" kids. Mine has put on maybe 3 lbs a year for the last 3 years and not many inches. I have watched others in his weight bracket put on 2 or 3 inches a year and not much more weight. Hunter's just 11 but his muscle definately makes up most of his weight!

My oldest son has gained 6 lbs in 6 years. His coaches have him on 150 calorie a day diet. They also have me chain him up out back of the house between practices & weight lifting. It seems a little much but it keeps him competitive.

Kids are all different! My two kids are built completely different and grow different also. My Oldest gains a lot of weight in the summertime and loses it after he starts football and wrestling practice just because it is tough not because we cut him! The only cutting he has ever done was cutting out candy and pop! He gains between 10-20 lbs in the summer and loses between 5 and 10 during football and wrestling for a gain of about 5-10 lbs a year whereas my youngest could eat everything under the sun and maybe gain 3 lbs a year. My younger son is 20 lbs lighter and about 6-7 inches shorter than my older son was as his age. Any way my point is every kid is different not only in size but also in the way that they wrestle! I think sometimes we tend to forget that! smile

My son wreslted 10U 100 wo years ago then wrestled 10U 95 last year and is wrestleing 12U 110 this year. They all seem to jump in weight different times.

At 12U 110 I think KEvin Folsom has wrestled there some this year. It would not suprise me to see some of the 105 pounders moving around. The 105 pound group is real tough this year.

Funny how kids change every year.My son was 8 under last year at 80# this year we are still 8 under but we will be going to 76#. Yes we feed him.The big dif is the way he grew.He is now taller and as cunky.

Re: Who's Tough? - 02/19/10 04:54 PM

I guess I just hate the way people always assume that if your kid is a wrestler and loses half a pound you are starving him! LOL Yes there is some of that but not every parent sucks thier kids down just to wrestle and the ones who do often just end up with another stud to battle with other than the one they ran from in the higher weight! lol

Re: Who's Tough? - 02/23/10 09:34 PM

Who all is out there at 8U 88. We have been a light 80 pounder all year so I have not really paid attention to the 88 bracket but he is in the middle of a growth spurt and since I can't convince him that it is not necessary to eat every single day we may have to consider moving up.

Tucker Branum from Colby, has a lot of talent, as does taylon peters from salina, another kid that I have seen alot of results on is wyatt hendrickson although I cannot remember where he is from he has been putting up good results all year.

Re: Who's Tough? - 02/24/10 04:30 PM

How bout 8 under 76? Numbers have been low at every tournament we've been to. Lot of kids jumping around due to growth spurts, ect and have seen a lot of kids at this weight that are around 71 - 72lbs also, including mine. Were not going to worry bout the weight as he started the year right at 75.

Thanks for the info. Hendrickson is from Newton and is probably the top dog. Hopefully this growth spurt will wait another month so we can stay at 80 but figured i better do my homework just in case.

Re: Who's Tough? - 02/24/10 10:59 PM

How Much has dylan gained in the last week? they say you can watch that and judge how much he will gain depending on the spurt itself. My son has just been average 5-7 pounds every year. The only good thing is that these spurts have seem to come in the summer rather than in the spring. I hope he can stay at 80 as well we were looking forward to seeing how we would stack up at districts.

He has been between 76 and 77 all season until 2 weeks ago he weighed 78 for Haysville weigh in and last week for Ulysses he weighed 79.6. This week he is been between 78.5 and 80 everyday. If he stays in this range next week we will stay at 80. We have not wrestled much in this area this year who else is in d4 at 80?

Re: Who's Tough? - 02/25/10 02:25 AM

There is Andrew Garcia (Garden City),Judson Wiltfong (Norton), Treylan Gross (Phillipsburg), Matthew Kirkendall (Stafford), and probably more but these names stick out to me as regulars for the d-4 area.

Re: Who's Tough? - 02/25/10 06:24 PM

The hendrickson boy is tough, Tucker lost to him in Salina 4-2 in OT. We've toyed with going to 80 .lbs for state because Tucker is a light 88 pounder. So besides D.Newton and the formentioned 80 pounders, who else is out their.
Posted By: 68Miller

Re: Who's Tough? - 02/25/10 07:48 PM

Think no matter where he is at, D. Newton will be the one to beat, however, don't know if Hartley is still at 80 or not, but he is right there with Newton. Everyone rainyracer mentioned will also make it a tough weight. Have watched Gross several times and he is very good.

Braden Morgan from Eldorado is another one at 80 that is pretty solid. Rudy Rodriguez from Salina and Hayden McArthur from bonner Springs are also pretty good. Is Tucker going to wrestle 80 or 88 at Hays? I entered Dylan at 88 and was hoping to wrestle Tucker.

On a thread like this, not too many people seem to talk about the older kids. After I looked at the original post, I can see why. The 14u wasn't even mentioned. Well, what the heck, look out for PJ Cheney at U14 95. He is a serious contender for the State Championship after finishing 2nd last year at U12 92. From what I have seen, he is definitely better than he was last year.

At that 14U class you see alot of kids coming out of MS and HS right about now and that shakes up everything!!!!
Posted By: Cyclone

Re: Who's Tough? - 02/27/10 06:47 PM

Yes there are quite a few 14U wrestlers who come back after middle school that can shake things up a bit! I may be incorrect, but if a wrestler is in high school, he will be wrestling in the high school division even though he may be 14. So for the most part, it will be the 14U middle school wrestlers who are added to the 14U "whose tough" mix.

Re: Who's Tough? - 02/28/10 02:41 AM

The way I understand it a 14 yr old hs wrestler has his choice which division he wants to enter.

watchout for Isaiah Gitrich 6u 73 pounds, he's only lost one time this year, except for the two times he wrestled in the hutch tournament where he was in 8u 73 pounds and he came in third

I heard that Dustin Reed Runner up at 103 in 4a this year is planning on wrestling the 14 and under division that would be a good one to throw in the mix up not sure what he plans on going yet

This is something that I have been contemplating since the High School division was added. The kids that can qualify for either the U14 Kids division or the High School division, how do they (or their parents/coaches) decide which route to go? In this case, an excellent wrestler who finishes 2nd at State in his freshman campaign, what does he do? Does he attempt to place in the (Grand State) High School division, or does he go for a State Championship in the U14 Kids division?
Posted By: BLT

Re: Who's Tough? - 03/01/10 01:17 AM

He does whatever his parents and coaches feel is the best thing for HIM. He's 14! Let him try to win another state title before moving on to the H.S. division!
Posted By: #1fan

Re: Who's Tough? - 03/01/10 03:44 AM

well what i heard from Reed is that ya he had a great season in High School and he said some people might say he is trying to dodge some good wrestlers that are to old for 14U but he doesnt care because he feels there will be tougher kids in 14U because not enough kids are doing kids at all so why do High School division and win when u can do 14U and have some better kids

Re: Who's Tough? - 03/01/10 01:10 PM

Yes, dagwood, you are correct, - must have been wrapped up in high school state and wasn't thinking clearly about kids club.
