Weigh In at State - 02/06/11 09:39 PM

Weigh-In will be different at State this year. My intention is to Weigh-In similar to the Tulsa Nationals. I would like some imput.

Great idea! The Roller series tourneys are the most efficient for getting in and out of weigh ins in a quick, organized manner. Let's do it!

I will second that KMac!

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/07/11 12:18 AM

Unless your the last weight to be weighed in. Then it sucks! We've had teammates who were done eating before we even weighed in. Been like that for the last couple years.

We get there before the 12:00 weigh in, they get split into their groups, then we wait till his group gets weighed in. We've gotten out of weigh ins just before 2:00 the last two years. You don't get rewarded for showing up early.

I didn't know there was a problem with state weigh ins? I like it the way it is. We show up on time, run in to weigh in, then in line for food. If we have to show up late, which has happened before because of an unexpected vet visit. We showed up, weighed in, and were in line for food.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/07/11 12:47 AM

Great idea and we were the last 10unders to weigh in at tulsa took 45min. And I wasn't thrown out in the cold by the expo Nazi's to freeze my butt off and wondering how its going in there.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/07/11 02:42 AM

Weigh in at Tulsa is also split. 6u, 8u, and 10u weigh in on Thursday. Friday 12u and 15u weigh in. When we were 10 u we got in line and weighed in and then were done. When we hit 12u we got sent to a section where their age and weight group was, then waited for that group to be called and they all weighed in together. We were the last to weigh in the two years in 12u and waited about hour and a half to weigh in. Our first year in 15u, and only year thanks to KSHSAA, we got weighed in after about 45 minutes. But we still had to wait for our 12u wrestler which took an hour or so.

Maybe I am missing something. Are the 10u weights at Tulsa held different then the upper age groups?

Or are you talking about moving wrestling times similar to Tulsa. The 12/15u weighin is held at 12:00, the wrestle from 4:00 to 11:00 pm. It's a grueling schedule for sure! I only had wrestlers in one group or it would have been an 8-11 day.

I still think Kansas kids state weigh ins don't need to be changed. But maybe I am missing something? Lately all the years seem to be rolling into one. I always remember the bad set ups, and don't remember anything bad about kansas kids state weigh ins. Always in and out at a decent time and headed to eat!

You say "similar to Tulsa" but what do you mean?

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/07/11 04:15 PM

I hate the way Tulsa and usjoc does their weight ins. Show up,weigh in, leave. Keep it that way. We got to Tulsa on time and waited an Hr it sucks. First come first serve I say.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/07/11 05:01 PM

I thought last year was better than many years in the past.

The thing that always seem to bottle it up was hair, nails and skin check.

I think they addressed that with more help and that inproved it alot.

Keep it the same other than the curtain nazis. Some parents have 6-8 year old kids they would like to be ale to keep a eye on and not get lost in the shuffle. Keep the baricades up to keep everyone out just leave it where kids can be accounted for.

They have to weigh in a singlet anyways so there is no privacy concerns is there?

A 9 year old boy lost part of a finger at weigh-ins In Colorado.
The kids were pushing and shoving just like they do here. Will and I witnessed it first hand. I just want to protect the kids.
I appreciate all of the input, good and bad. My goal is to do the best job we can.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/14/11 07:55 PM

Could we start weigh-ins in the morning rather than at 2:00 or whatever time it was/is. That seems to be the problem...everyone shows up at 1:00 for a 2:00 weigh-in and then the line begins... There might be a small line to start with, but nothing like the 2:00 line.

I'd volunteer to help, and could help recruit others...

Everyone is arguing either for or against. For those of us who have never been to Tulsa, why don't you explain what the difference is.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/15/11 12:28 AM

My suggestion is to make each District responsible for weighing their own kids in. Keep the process uniform for all 4 districts and have the District provide a ref and scales. In that, each District can run the weigh-in such as this. Check in at the District represented Official and have skin/nail/hair checked once thats passed pick up weigh-in card from district table according to Age group. Take weigh-in card to District run scales. Running it in this way the kids get in and out quickly and the weigh-ins run very smoothly. Very similar to how Park City runs their weigh-ins, which I believe they ran through about 1500 kids in about an hour for weigh-in last year. Multiply the process for each District and the process can be streamlined.

I have run all three of the tournaments' weigh-ins that I have been associated with this year using this process and I have to say that it is the most streamlined and easiest process I have ever seen in my son's 7 years in the sport.

If anyone in charge reads these and wants more information please feel free to contact me.

If I understand this, some of us would basically be forced to burn another couple hundred in Topeka waiting for Saturday? Thank God my parents live in Topeka.....

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/17/11 12:27 AM

I have an idea open the doors at 1:00p.m. until 6:00 p.m.. I'll volunteer my time from 1 until 3:30 to help. This would allow wrestlers to come n go as they please. No mad rush. U could check into your rooms and then go weigh-in and then eat or go weigh-in, go eat then check into your rooms. Then since we're into trackwrestling and satellite weigh-ins. Why can't we set up two locations in each district for kids to weigh-in at. Let's say Hays and Great Bend for district 4. District 3(just about everyone is going to pass thru here) I would say just Salina. District 1 and 2 find two locations that most people would pass thru on their way to Topeka. I would run these satellite weigh-ins from 4 until 8 on friday. This would give people the choice of driving to topeka or a satellite weigh-in. Whatever is best for them. Let some parents (leave work later), help the kids out west, and even the very northern, southern, and eastern kids that live on the borders or in no mans land. I would also give the kids an hour Sat. morning instead of 30 min. to weigh-in. If we all come together this would work. It's been about 8 years since i've been tulsa(and it sucked weighing in)!

Thanks,

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/19/11 03:03 PM

It looks like we are going to "tulsa like" weigh ins. Weighing in by groups. All 8u, 10u, 12u, 14u, and HS, by weight groups. All 16 called up for each weight group. Tulsa is split between 2 days with 12 and 15u taking around 2+ hours. I am sure some will be there at 4:00 and leave around 7 or 8. Why mess with something that works? I hope I am wrong.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/23/11 04:48 PM

Insted of letting the wrestlers use all the scales to make wait check all the scales if there is a 5 tenths different allow 5 tenths on the hevier scales it might save some time. Just a though. Also could you pleeeeeeease way 12 and under 120 first : ) kinda sucks waiting an Hr or more just to way in

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/23/11 07:09 PM

GREAT---just read the flyer on weigh-ins. Wonder how long it will take me to get all 3 of mine through since I have a 10 and under, 14 and under and a HS------just what I wanted to do---hurry up and wait seems to be the problem people will holler about this year for weigh-ins.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/25/11 01:57 PM

So will there be any type of expected schedule developed for this?

I think they are trying to cram 8 hours of weigh ins into three.

Will the weigh in be cut off at 7 pm or until every group has weighed in?

Is it expected the kids that missed their groups can get in line to be weighed at 7pm?

It all seems a litttle vague and I will have to explain it to the parent so just getting prepared.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/25/11 02:50 PM

A weigh-in schedule will be posted. We will be using 10 scales and weighing in all 5 groups at the same time. This will NOT drag out the process. Weigh-in will begin at 4pm and end at 7 pm.

Yes, if you are not there at 4pm you will be weighed in after all of the groups!

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/25/11 03:17 PM

Will this schedule be posted online or just at the venue?

Online would be helpful to some families that can't leave work to be there by 4pm but could make it by 5:00, but there is concern that then you would still have to wait until 7 if your age/weight had already been called. Last year we were there by 5pm and out within 20 minutes.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/25/11 03:31 PM

Why the change in how weigh-ins are handled? Last year's weigh-in was smooth for my son--we were in and out in less than 10 minutes. I can imagine there will be several families that won't be able to be there by 4 PM because the parents have to work. Why fix something that isn't broken?

I did read the posts! I've been following the weigh-in discussion since it started. I knew from previous posts about the unfortunate situation in Colorado. Just thought I would give my perspective on last year's weigh-in situation and it was my son's first time at state. I thought the weigh-in worked well last year that's all.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/25/11 05:51 PM

I am glad to see you guys willing to make change to try to make things better and safer. I thought weigh ins went pretty well each of the last two years but when the doors were opened at 4 it did kind of resemble a stampede to the tables to get their card and get in line to weigh. Glad to see you are being proactive and not waiting for an accident at our weigh ins to be concerned about the safety of our kids.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/25/11 11:25 PM

Love the weigh in idea.....but.....will the doors be open at let's say 3:00 so kids can go in and find their place in process...or is it going to be a mad dash??...at 4:00.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/25/11 11:51 PM

*** NEW FOR 2011 ***

Wrestlers and their families will be able to enter the facility at 2pm through Exhibition Hall. You may either stay in Exhibition Hall or go into Landon Arena and be seated. However, you will not be allowed on the wrestling arena floor (Landon Arena) until your weight is called. Weigh-ins will not start until 4:00 pm.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/26/11 12:54 AM

Should have this been talked about this fall at the state meeting getting a vote not just deciding a month before state. I myself dont like this because I will need to take off work earlier or send my boy with someone who may have to wait longer.
Posted By: ath618

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/27/11 05:34 PM

So now the mad rush through the door will be at 4:00 p.m. We used to have hours to complete the weigh in process. Now everyone will want to be there at the start time so they will not have to wait until the end of weigh ins.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/27/11 09:28 PM

Now unless you live near Topeka you must pull kids out of school early to make it to weigh-ins before 4:00. I have told all my parents and wrestlers that school comes first. Now I need to back step and explain that sometimes wrestling comes first? Really???
Posted By: Tom Richard

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/27/11 09:44 PM

Weigh-in is from 4pm to 7pm, no different than before! If you’re not there at 4 pm it’s ok! The only real difference is no waiting in the vestibule. You will be able to come in and take a seat.
Posted By: T.Williams

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/27/11 09:45 PM

So if I'm understanding this correctly we must do weigh ins at 4pm this year? I live about 2 hrs away, work, and kids are still in school until 3 or 3:20. Why is it we tell our kids that school is a priority and we use the no pass no play rule, but its ok to be taken out of school for something not school related. My kids have perfect attendence for 3 yrs in a row. Thats not fair to them at all...Is this a convience to the people weighing in the kids or the kids?
Posted By: Tom Richard

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/27/11 09:59 PM

In the past Seventy Percent of the kids are on site to weigh-in well before 4pm. The change is designed to handle those kids in a more controlled manor for safety reasons. If your wrestler shows up between 4pm and 7pm on Friday and 6:00 am and 6:30 am they will be weighed. This change is all about safety!

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/27/11 10:04 PM

Mr Williams the weigh in times are the same as last year. If you dont want to be there at 4 that is ok show up at 6 that night and you can still weigh in. There is also a morning weigh in option if you would like to do that instead.

The only thing that has changed is procedure on how the weigh ins are done the times are all the same.

Hope this helps you.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/28/11 11:59 AM

So if I'm understanding...
Each age division has 2 scales.
The kids will sit in the stands in a cetain section according to age.
Each section will have a few rows of seats assigned per weight.
When the kids enter they find their age section and sit in the row that is assigned for their weight.
When weigh ins start they call the kids down to the floor by each weight division.
You then cycle thru each weight division over and over until the end of weigh ins.
If you come in at 6:00 you just go to your age and weight area and wait for them to call that group again.
If you don't make weight you go do what you need to do and then go sit back in your area until they call that group so you can try again.

Pros and Cons
Pros
You know where your kid is at all times! He's not mixed in this herd getting pushed around or back by older kids.
Its way more organized and goes faster for the people doing the weigh ins.

Cons
The wait for the wrestler SEEMS longer. Especially if they don't make weight the 1st time. But in reality its faster.
If you have a group of kids of different ages and only a few adults trying to stick together (siblings, car pool) it can really spread them out. So pick a "rally spot" for everyone to meet at after they are done. It helps from chasing kids all over.
You always get that kid that just missed his group and wants to get squeezed in real quick... stick to your guns and your process. Once you make exceptions for one kid everyone wants one.

I like the idea. Yes if your one of the heavier weights then you have to wait a little longer initally but eventually the wait time is the same one the cycle repeats.

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/28/11 12:18 PM

Does two scales per age group sound a bit shy of enough? That is how many some clubs use for an invitational. Is there a problem with having more scales?
Posted By: BLT

Re: Weigh In at State - 02/28/11 12:39 PM

But when the very max is 16 per weight thats should be enough.
