2011 Heartland Elementary National Duals

2011 Heartland Elementary National Duals - 02/07/11 07:24 PM

This years event will be held April 8th-11th at Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska. It is for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders. If you are in the 6th grade and are 14 years old, you are not allowed to participate.

Team Kansas has attended this great event for the last couple years and will do so again this year. I am hoping to fill 3 teams like we did last year.

There are 17 weights - 50,55,60,65,70,75,80,85,90,95,100,105,112,120,130,140 and 160. We are allowed 3 alternates per team.

I expect the cost to be similar to what it was last year ($250.00 per wrestler). That will include Team Kansas singlet, shorts, t-shirt, lodging and transportation.

I will be posting the required forms and further information in the near future.

Don't miss out. If your kid places top 4 at state send them, the experience of competing for Team Kansas is unreal. My son still talks about it to this day...People are always talking about can Kansas compete, start them early and send them to events like this and it will make them better.

I didn't follow this last year but is it broken down by grade or can 3rd grader wrestle 6th grader? If so, feel free to bump my kid at 60 pounds if there is an older kid who weighs 60. I certainly won't be offended.

Not to speak for the great organizers for this event, but it is 6th grade and below. There is only one division. It will take younger kids to fill the lower weight and be aware as they get heavier the chance to have to wrestle a 6th grader goes up as the weights do.

It is a great time and Clayton still has great friends from other clubs because of this event. It also lets them gain the team scoring experience.

Heres the thing though...
And I can not stress this enough!!!
If you say you are going to go then make sure you are prepared to follow thru with this committment!
Every year people say they will go and back out at the very last minute. This isnt fair! people express interest in going and that weight is full and then people back out. Im not talking 1 or 2 kids!
Spencer had the best time ever and made some awesome friendships!

I will keep track of all interested wrestlers and post a list later.

Coaches and parents, I ask for your help particularly with the upper weights. They added 160 this year. We seem to struggle filling the upper weights. Remember in a dual format, it is important to fill all weights.

I am working on hotels and will post where we will be staying as soon as I get that figured out.

He had a great time last year - I mean besides the part about getting Strep and not being able to wrestle - that part wasn't so great!

He has really been anticipating the chance to get be a part of Team Kansas and to wrestle this year, if he's offered the opportunity!

I am interested in this possiblity for my son (Garrett Starks)....He is a 4th grader (10u) and is 76-79 lbs....any more details about lodging etc would be great too....we would also entertain the driving and coaching and all other assisting as well!

Just wanted to bring this back to the top. Anyone interested in their wrestler getting better and is in elementary school needs to sign up for this. Dal Eck will be putting the teams together right after state and coming out with details in the near future. Your child will get 6-10 top quality matches and meet many new friends. They will receive a cool singlet and be able to represent Kansas. Doesn't get much better than that. Dal will be taking taking several teams so get your name on the list now.

The problem I see with waiting until after the State tournament to make the team is that my son (6th grade 12u 80lbs) can Q for the Middle School Dual Team and that will be decided right after Subs. So, if he makes that team and then makes the Ele. team what we to do? Do you already have a plan for 6th graders in this position?

We went the last two years and my son is 7th grade now. If I were you, I would go to ele. duals. It will be all the comp he wants. You will have two years after this for middle school.

Here is the info for the Elementery Duals in Fremont, NE held on April 8-10, 2011.

We will be taking 3 teams like last year. The wrestlers listed below have committed to going and as you will see, we are far short of filling the teams. I ask coaches and parents to help us out. There are several kids who went last year that have not signed up to go this year. This event is for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders - as long as you are not 14 years old

The cost is $250.00 per wrestler. This includes a Team Kansas singlet, shorts and shirt, lodging and transportation to and from Lawrence to Fremont,NE. Will Cokeley is nice enough to let the dual teams meet at his Auto Exchange business and we load up in vans and leave from there. I alway order a bunch of t-shirts to sell to the parents, etc and we usually have enough money from the sales to buy at least one meal and provide all the water the boys can drink.

The team entry fees went up this year, but fortunately our hotel expenses will be less so we could keep the total cost the same. I have asked our state guys to vote on providing some future funding for these duals similar to what the other dual teams get. If that passes, the cost should come down a little for future years.

We will be staying at the Sleep Inn, 120 W Cathy Street, Fremont, NE - (402)721-8400. I have reserved 15 additional rooms for parents. Tell them you are with Team Kansas Wrestling and you will get our rate - $60.00 plus tax.

My son is a 4th grader and has wrestled at 79# all year. I saw the 80lb spot is taken but you said maybe taking 3 teams!!??

Also, this is the same weekend as Brute so what are your thoughts on one vs the other!!??

I know you will get more matches at the duals than at Brute. As far as quality of the matches, I would think it would be better at the duals. Last year Christian had three in his bracket at Brute, so we opted out of that and went to Folkstyle nationals. So you can check entries at Brute and see who is in his bracket and decide from there.

Thats a great idea....to do that you just have to pay for the entries for both and then decide correct!!?? My son would be in the 4th grade 80lb bracket so i am sure there would be quite a few in that one but who knows....at the elementary duals how are the brackets set up? Is it like a 2 day round robin type of thing or what!!??

They set up pools the first day and then depending how you do in the pools. You are put into a bracket and wrestle out to the champion of each bracket.
On the pay part of the duals. In the past, Dal has you pay when you show up at Cokeley's dealership to head to Nebraska.

Dual tournament format. You Dual as a team against a team from another state. You will get 4 or 5 Duals against the teams in your pool on saturday. On sunday your team will be placed in a bracket based upon how you finished in your pool. Last year I believe there was a gold, silver and bronze bracket. You will complete the bracket on sunday. Usually 3 or 4 more duals per team.

Last year they divided us into Pools for Saturday. We wrestled 4 matches on Saturday to determine Sunday's bracket. Last year they had a Gold, Silver, and Bronze bracket on Sunday and placed each team according to their record on Saturday and overall points scored. Once you get to Sunday, the teams are placed in a bracket and you just wrestle it out like any other tourney. Each bracket on Sunday was an 8-man bracket, so the # of matches is determined by how you are doing, although after you lose your 2nd match, you still get another one to determine placing (5th, 7th).
We went to Brute 2 yrs and then chose to go to Elementary Duals last year. In my opinion, Duals is by far the better option and your kid(s) will remember the experience for a long time. It also gives them a taste of the format that they will wrestle in High School and they make a ton of new friends that they will have throughout their wrestling career.

HaHa thats funny John....that was pretty quick!

Okay well my son is Garrett Starks from hutchinson and has made huge improvments so we were thinking that it was time this year to take him to a dual/national type tourney after state. This is only his second year of wrestling but i think that he has worked very hard to learn and is leaps and bounds over other novice and second yr wrestlers. I think the elementary dulas sound really cool and i just may do this instead?

Anyone with any input on yrs of experience or any of you familiar with my kid to advise for or against the duals!!???

As you can see, we are short in the upper weights. I know some wrestlers are waiting to commit until after the state tournament. However, I want to pick the teams as soon as I can after the state tournament, so please get signed up quickly.

I know the parents and coaches are trying to help fill these teams. Hopefully the wrestlers who have gone to any of the duals can help recruit the big guys. I think almost everyone who has gone to these things has had a blast.

Yes, state placing will be taken into account. We want to take the most competitive teams we can. Sometimes in 12 and under (mostly in the heavier weights) there will not be any 6th grade state placers though.

You can bump Cameron Hughbanks from 100 to 105 if you need him to. He weighs around 103 anyways. If one of the 95 lbs moves up then that would make all those middle weighs full. We don't care at all just wanted to let you know he will do whatever helps the teams.

Parents, please watch the forum for a link to the reqired forms that I need filled out and sent to me. I have asked Mike Juby to set up the link and hopefully it will be available soon.

In addition to the 3 forms, I will need a copy of the wrestler's birth certificate, insurance card and current grade card.

Please mail everything including your check made payable to Dal Eck to the address on the bottom of the Team Kansas Code of Conduct form. 9915 W 21st N Suite A / Wichita, KS 67205

The coaches will be meeting sometime Monday or Tuesday evening -3/28 or 3/29 - to select the teams and alternates. We are still in need of some wrestlers at 50,112,130,140 and 160.

There will probably be some last minute additions and deletions. I still want you to sign up even if it looks like your weight class is full.

I really need help filling the upper weights. Any information as to who is in the 6th grade at those weights would be appreciated. If we don't have enough kids to fill the weights, we will look at the state brackets and call coaches / parents to try and fill the teams.

There are only 3 teams. The additional wrestlers have the chance to go as alternates - with a limit of 2 per team for a total of 6 alternates. The alternates get the same singlet, shorts and t-shirt as everyone else.

Teams were selected by input from 11 or 12 coaches.

Alternates have the option to wrestle on the alternate teams - which is what I recomend because you are assured of more matches - or the alternates can opt to stay with their team and hope that there are alternate kids on the opposing teams that are near their weight.

Last year there were 2 teams made up of alternates from all the states. They are planning on at least 2 alternate teams again this year.

This was one of the tough decisions the coaches had to make, but we felt 12 88 bracket was tougher than the 10 90.

It would be helpful if you would post the minutes from your meeting when you decided the placement of these boys. We would like to know who the coaches are that were at this meeting. It seems that there were weight changes on these boys that were not posted on your "multiple posts in no particular order". I want you and your team of pickers to make us understand why you choose seedings in the order that you did. The 65 to 80#lb picks appear to be manipulated with weight changes and placement of boys that are clearly not seeded correctly. Why is the Onwugbufor moved to a diffrent weight. We also want to know where Trowbridge has wrestled any of these 70lb# this year. Please state where and when these matches took place for I have not found one. A little clarity would be greatly appreciated. It would be nice in previous years that you hold your meeting on a weekend so other coaches can attend that are not over a hundred miles away on a work week or via camra on internet so that all boys can be measured and judged equally. I don't think that should be a problem seeings your results were not posted until today. I know Trackwrestling is not a accurate measure of boys. There are several large tournaments not on track and I have looked at them to. And have yet to find evidence or reasoning of your choices. One last thing is this your private team or is this a sanctioned USA KANSAS team because I am also baffled who the true judge and jury is on the selection process. But if you kindly post those meeting minutes and the coaches that attended I'm sure things will become clear as a bell. Sounds to me like you would be an excellent candidate to step up and take over the Elementary Dual teams for next year. It amazes how someone who goes out of their way, spends a ton of extra time trying to get dual teams put together to represent the state of Kansas receives nothing but criticism. Just like a High School dual, you move wrestlers around to make the strongest team possible!

It also sounds to me like you should read the posts, maybe then you or your coaches could have made arrangements to be at the meeting! Most people were or are still wrestling on the weekends, and spend Sundays with their families, therefore Tuesday sounded just as good as any. I know on here it also asked to send in any and all information you may have about your child or children that may be interested in wrestling. This was an attempt to make meeting a little easier, but you can't please everyone!!

There are no minutes from the meeting.

This is put together voluntarily by many of the best coaches in the state.

We try to put together the most competitive teams we can.

Wrestler grow, others feel they have to cut to be competitive at these national events. There are always last minute requests to get in. We have one kid who has a stomach disease and has lost weight because he has no choice but to eat healthy. I specifically asked one dad if his son could cut down a weight class to help the team. There are several weight where 1 and 2 are probably interchangeable.

We go to this event to help kids get better and to have a little fun.

These teams receive no money from Kansas Wrestling.

If your son is not where you think he deserves to be and you want to keep him home and miss out on some great wrestling, feel free to do so.

I did not sign on to listen to your rant. I did not insult anyone including you. I asked clear questions and would like them answered. I am sure it is safe to say that you were a member of that comittee. Seeings your a man of great vizion and apparent wisdom maybe you can answer the questions. I have kept up with this thread frequently and what was presented today is far from what has been posted and a far cry from the facts of these boys true wrestling statistics of this year. If the team was going to be hand picked by one such as yerself it should have been stated. It has not been selected by accurate true facts of their records and state placings... WHICH WAS STATED ON THIS THREAD for the selection process. So please refrain from your typing in red and bullying tactics. I want to know why and who placed them like that. If you can not justify what was done and why and have no recall of the meeting that took place then you are the wrong man for the job also. A little clarity on the selection would put this to bed.

Thank you for your response Dal. But once again I did not ask who the great coaches of this state are. I asked who was at the meeting. It is apparent after these comments that boys were slided for personal prefrence then their abilities. Which is absolutely fine just make sure next year that when you ask for participants that you clearly state YOU ARE HAND PICKING YOUR PREFERED BOYS not the ones who earned the spot with their current years preformance. Next year lets not be a wolf in sheep skin its tacky.

I am almost sure that somewhere in here in states team will be set by the kids finish in state this year.

If there is anyone that thinks a 12U placer is below a 10U is not usually accurate, but possible.

Dal does a great job with this I hope we don't blow this because someone told you your kid isn't as good as ones on the list.

If it's not going to be a fare pick then just be honest from the start don't wait for state. Apparently there are several boys good enough and better then they are placed. But that was not the selection process that was described on the forum. Good luck to all the boys have a safe trip. Chin up to the ones that got shafted nothing about wrestling is fair. And no thanks to the great coaches of this state that did not show repect to the boys that got shafted they worked just as hard as yours and these BOYS ARE NOT FROM OKLAHOMA

There's also many cases where a 12U non state qualifier is still a better choice then a 10U state placer. This task is like any other seeding meeting, unless someone has direct criteria over someone else then somewhere someone has to make a judgement call.
I promise you that these young men will have an excellent experience and will be very well looked after. They will see some of the best competition in the country and build relationships that will last for many years to come.
That alone is worth the cost!

I was there also and I know there were some tough call but the group worked through each one and put them where we thought they should be.

Again I am sure it was stated by how they finished in STATE would how they would be placed, with the exception of 12U kids.

Wow!! So have your kid go and prove that he belonged on Team 1. That simple! The only injustice here would be if you didn't send your kid to wrestle in this event because you think he is better than everyone! My son was on team 2 last year but he felt he was the better wrestler even though he had lost to the kid ahead of him. I told him to go up there and prove it. He went undefeated and truly enjoyed the opportunity to have wrestled in this event. These gentlemen truly care about this sport and are doing things to better these young men by spending their time and energy putting this together. What are you doing? I truly doubt that the young men could care less what team they're on, it's the parents ego's that get hurt, like yours. Of course this is assuming that you have a young man wrestling!! Many years from now no one will really care who was on team 1, 2 or 3 they will remember the friends and good times that will be made by attending events like these. Don't spoil it for your kid that is wanting to go because your ego gets hurt because "little Johnny" didn't get picked to represent team 1. Send them because they are representing Kansas and themselves!!

Carlos hey watch the "little Johnny" comments as there is a "little Johnny" in this situation lets us "little Billy, Tommy, Joey" as I didn't see any billy, Tommy or Joey's" We have feeling ya know not many but do have some.LOL

And the forum posts an excellent point just to go is a great experience if they posted a kid as an alternate I would still have them go I think the alts got a some good matches last year.

From my perspective it looks like you probably have the 120's in the right order. I can't necessarily speak to Jacob and Kortin in head-to-head, and absolutely no disrespect to Kortin, even though he is a year older - you can tell Jacob had really been working hard and picked up his game as the season went along - taking state.

As far as Jacob and Hunter, even though they have gone back and forth over the last couple of years - I think you definately have to give the nod to Jacob over Hunter at this point - Jacob beat Hunter 3-0 at state and took 1st.

And as far as Hunter and Kortin go, Kortin has had the edge over Hunter so far.

Just my view - Hunter's dad.

Zack Bowen has criteria over Driskill.
He has beat him multiple times this year.
Yes Driskill is a state qualifier but it was at 140.
I know both of these boys personally and either one will give you 110%.
But I would put Bowen as 1st team and Driskill 2nd team.

Tanner will be ok with whatever team position there is. He lost to Zach 2-0 last year at State, ended up taking 3rd, never wrestled Driskil. Wrestled the likes of Alan Clothier, Seth Burnett and many other 7th graders this season.

I don't know this weight very well but I am not sure about the 10U kid over a 12U kid.

Kortin did beat Jacob a couple times last year.

I don't think Kortin will be upset either way just giving input.

It is true that the Sleep Inn messed up our reservations and gave all the rooms away. I had reserved 16 rooms for the wrestlers and 15 for the parents. They booked 10 or 12 to the Kansas parents and then released the rest INCLUDING the 16 meant for the team. Scratch another hotel off the list for future duals.

We will now be staying at the Holiday Inn Express in west Omaha. The phone number is 402-333-5566. The address is 17677 Wright Street.

Weigh in on Friday starts at 5 pm. We will be there by 4 pm to turn in our paperwork and be one of the first to weigh in.

If your son is not riding with the teams, make sure he is at Midland Lutheran College by 4 pm Friday. We have to weigh in as a team so all wrestlers must be there at that time.

Please have your wrestler at the Auto Exchange in Lawrence - 1225 E 23rd St - by 11:00 am this Friday. We will load up and leave no later than noon.

We should arrive in Fremont a little before 4:00. I want everyone there at that time. Weigh-in starts at 5:00, but in years past, we have been able to weigh in earlier. We HAVE to weigh in as a team, so if we are missing anyone, the whole team has to wait to weigh in.

After weigh-ins, I plan on having the team go eat at USA Steak Buffet in Fremont. We have eaten there the last couple years. It costs $.69 per year for kids and it is $9.29 for adults. Kids drinks are included but the adult drinks are not.

After we finish eating, we will head to our hotel and get checked in. I will have a rooming list for the kids. The coaches and I will make sure everyone is in their assigned rooms and ready for bed at 10:00.

The hotel breakfast starts at 6:30 am and they know we have 3 teams that will be eating early. We need to leave the hotel no later than 7:30 in the morning. Wrestling starts at 9:00 am both Saturday and Sunday.

We will have plenty of bottled water for the wrestlers to drink. I may need someone with a truck to help haul the coolers to and from Fremont.

We will have Team Kansas t-shirts for sale - $15.00 each or 2 for $25.00. We normally sell enough of these so that I can provide turkey and ham sandwiches for lunch on Saturday.

We will buy pizza for the teams Sat night and eat it at the hotel.

Just found out that all wrestlers will need their USA cards at weigh-in. In years past, I just provided a list with the USA card numbers on it.

And fyi: I was just on trackwrestling looking at freestyle tournaments and it looks like TW is going to be covering the brackets for the duals this year IDK how much info they'll broadcast but with that new dashboard option that might be a great way to keep for those who can't make it.

I was still in aww and I quit listening, what a great change. From a Hotel that didn't want us to the Holiday Inn that has perks!

Great work on keeping all this together, I am sure there was some stress involved with the Sleep Inn!

The van drivers will be Dal Eck, Jon Harper, Casey Pappan and Brian Dultmeier.

I will have a list of kids riding in each van. No changing of vans will be allowed. I and the van drivers need to know where all the kids are at all times. We will make sure everyone is in their assigned vans every time we leave.

We will need to fill the vans with gas several times on the trip. We must also have them full when we return them to Lawrence. There is a Quik Trip across from the Auto Exchange where we do this once back. Van drivers, please keep your receipts and I will pay you for the gas when we get back to Lawrence.

I am missing paperwork from 24 wrestlers. Please get this to me ASAP. I'm sure there are several on the way.

I will be leaving early Friday morning, so I will not be opening any mail that day. If you mailed your paperwork today, please bring a copy of it with you just in case I don't get it by Thursday.

I would like to deal with as little paperwork as I can on Friday before we leave. If you are bringing it with you Friday, please let me know.

We also need volunteers to help run the table during each of our duals. It would be nice if there were several who could take turns so the same person does not have to do it all the time.

Coyotes won the voting for the first team. I don't think we have time to vote for the second team. Since there were more votes for the Bucks than the Bobcats, Bucks will be Team 2 and Bobcats will be Team 3.

Just a few reminders for the trip;

Meet no later than 11 am in Lawrence at the Auto Exchange - 1225 E 23rd St. - 23rd is highway 10.

Find me and check in. Make sure you have your paperwork if you have not sent it in yet. I will give you a paper showing your van and room assignments. After checking in, Shawn Budke and a couple other coaches will be handing out your singlets, shorts and t-shirts. Once you have everything, find your van and load all your stuff into it. Van #4 is the only van that is close to full, so if the kids in van #4 run out of room to put stuff, vans 1, 2, and 3 will have plenty of room. Once in Fremont and checked into our hotel, the vans will be full as almost everyone will be riding together.

Bring your USA Card and any skin release forms.

If you are NOT meeting and leaving from Lawrence, make sure you have a singlet to weigh in with. We are going to give out the gear in Lawrence to the wrestlers who are riding together. I don't know if we will have time to pass out the gear to the kids who are driving separate before weigh-ins in Fremont.

You will need spending money for Friday evenings meal and all day Sunday. The hotel will have breakfast for us both mornings and Saturdays meals are taken care of.

Remember, if you mailed your paperwork Tuesday or later, make sure you bring a copy with you to Lawrence. I will not be getting the Friday mail until next week.

Thank you to everyone who made this such a great experience. Jonny had such a great time last year so we decided to tag along this weekend and are already looking forward to next year. Glad to meet some great kids/parents, watch some incredible wrestling and even had a blast working the table for our Bobcats. A special thanks to the Dads who stepped up to coach for their time and support: Trowbridge, Pappan, Lynn & Glover.

Pleasantly surprised to meet some exceptional referees - Russ Akren and John Patrick really stood out as having a love for the sport and the kids' best interest at heart. As we all know, not ALL the refs can be exceptional but one explained it well earlier today - "...that is a judgment call. A judgment call is an opinion and I am not perfect". Well said...

Just wanted to say thank you again to Dal and all the Bobcat coaches. What a weekend of fun! This was our last year and Allen had a great weekend and a great tournament going 6-2. How exciting it is to see boys from all over Kansas come together and cheer each other on as Team Kansas! I only hope my grandson will wrestle there next year so I can go back. I know it took a lot of time and effort organizing and getting this all together...again thanks for all you do for the boys of Kansas. I know the boys won't forget this weekend.

What a great weekend!!!! Great matches and a alot of fun!!! Definitely a neat change to have the "team" aspect in wrestling - loved the excitement and the enthusiasm from all the boys supporting their teammates!!

Had a great time meeting and visiting with other parents; what a great group!

Thank you to everyone for all their work with making this event a success!!!!

We will be moving on to middle school next year - definitely looking forward to that experience.

I want to thank all the wrestlers, parents and coaches who helped with the duals. I hope everyone had fun.

I believe overall, the wrestling was tougher than it was last year with more teams and better wrestlers thru-out the weights. There were very few easy matches which is why we go. I expect it to continue to get tougher as more states send their teams.

I would like input from the parents as it pertains to hotels. The hotel we stayed at wants to raise our rate next year to $99.00 - it was $79.99 this year. I have not responded yet and of course I will try to negotiate that rate a little. I liked the hotel and area surrounding it. The 25 minute drive was easy with 4 lane highway almost all the way.

I have lots of t-shirts left for sale if anyone wants one. I have a couple singlets also.

Hope to see you all at the F/S Greco events this summer.

Thanks for including us again this year. Boo and Louis don't ever get on here, so I want to thank you on their behalf too. We looked forward to this event all year and it didn't disappoint. We were already talking about next year on the drive home....who's a 5th grader, how much will so-and-so weigh....that says it all.
As for the hotel, I thought the commute was fine and the free "pepsi" machine was an added bonus! I'm fine with either hotel if you decide to go back to the one in Fremont.

Dal and all the coaches,

This was Riley's first and last year to go as he is a sixth grader. He had a blast and was excited to come home with a great experience and great new friends. He is still telling stories. Thanks again for making it so organized, easy for us parents who were dying at home because we couldn't be there, and giving the kids such a great life experience. Can't wait to get Cael going so we can come up too.
