my son is 5 should he go to state? - 03/01/11 12:12 AM

This is his first year wrestling 6U 43lbs and has done very well. Earning 1st and 2nd place in all his novice tournaments. I cannot decide if I should allow him to enter state. Any suggestions?

We took our son last year at that age. To him it was just another tournament.

Ask him if he wants to wrestle. If they still want to then let them. Don't just do it cause you want to.Some kids can wrestle forever and some are done early.

he wants to wrestle, loves, it and is good at it. But I know the competition is going to be so much more competitive and didn't want to discourage him.

Took my son (Ky Biddle) at the age of 5 with the same feelings you are having. I said I'd just let him wrestle subs and if he places he"ll go on to districts, he placed 4th and moved onto districts where i said the same as last week. He placed 4th again, decided to let him go onto state and let him wrestle. To my surprise the little squirt placed 6th at 8U 40lbs in a bracket that was won by the stud TAYLOR MOEDER. Let him wrestle, best decision i ever made.

Are you talking about 6u state in Ottawa?

when my oldest son was 5 we took 2 weeks off and practiced the week before 6 under state. he won 3 matches and was 2 matches away from placing that year. he was in a 52 man bracket. he asked me the next year on the first day of the season when is state. he won state last year at the top of 8 and is doing well this year at the bottom of 10. my favorite thing about wrestling is watching how they progress from year to year.

Good story!

I don't have any kids in this battle, or have in the past, my boy started when he was 7. But if I did, I'd probably lean more towards letting my 5 year old wrestle 8 u kids state, at a lower weight, then I would have them wrestle the unofficial 6 under state. It can be brutal wrestling through the backside of a 64 man bracket.

my son is four years old and this is also his first year of wrestling. He has placed in 6 out of 10 tournaments. we are going to the 6 and under state championships. I dont know how well he will do but we are going to give it a shot. he wants to wrestle so that is all that matters to me. Now i would not allow him to move up and wrestle the 8 yr olds so he can wrestle subs and so forth...

My son's first year of wrestling he was 6 and under. He won every novice tournament we attended that year. We decided to move him up to 8 and under open and wrestle him in the sub-district tournament. He got thumped...badly. He walked away saying I never want to wrestle again!

Luckily he came back the next year. We as parents learned a valuable lesson. He is now a college wrestler at Baker.

I guess my point is that just because they do well at Novice doesn't mean they are ready for open. He is so young, give him time to learn to enjoy this sport.

this is a question i have asked myself my son is 6 going to be 7 the end of the month and its his 2 yr of wrestling and he started doing open this year and he wants to try subdistricts well he just wants to wrestle all the time it doesn't matter what it is but i don't want him to come back and say i don't want to wrestle any more he loves wrestling and he is a little guy he is just now half way threw the season starting to where he is getting over 37 lbs so do i go ahead and take him to subs and let him try?

my son wrestled one novice this year got first and we moved him to open he will be 7 at the end of the month and most of these kids he wrestled last year so i entered him in it we will see how he does and he is wrestling 6 and under state sense we host it he has placed 1 or 2 most of the year in all the tournaments he has wrestled at which were all open so i figure why not give him the option i have heard from other parents its a really good experience
