Brian,

To become a certified official, you must register with KSHSAA. The web address is http://www.kshsaa.org.

After registering, you will need to attend an online meeting. You will receive all of the information after you have registered, for a first time official I think that the cost is $45. You will need to take the officials test after the online meeting. There might also be clinics in your area.

In your area there will be area supervisor meetings, this is where you can meet other officials and get your information out to others. In November you can register with USAWKS to get certified to work post season.

Please PM me with any other questions you might have.

You don't have to be a KSHSAA licensed official although it is very greatly suggested. Otherwise you just send $5 and the paper found in the link above to the USAWKS people.

Alex, that used to be correct until a few years ago, when KSHSAA registration was added as a requirement. Here is the excerpt from the Kids' Bylaws:

To be a Kansas Kids registered official:
  • 1. Return registration form with a check for $5.00.
  • 2. Must be a high school registered official.
  • 3. An official referee uniform is mandatory during all competition.
  • 4. Failure to honor a written contract to officiate will be grounds to have Kansas Kids certification revoked.
  • 5. Must have officiated at least one kids tournament to be considered for the Kids State Tournament.

Guess I missed that change, since I've always registered with KSHSAA I never worried about it.

Re: Referee LIcense - 09/14/12 11:29 PM

Only if you wish to be able to work the KSHSAA postseason, Regionals/State.

I do however recommend it as they cover the points of emphasis and some unusual situations that may have occured during the year. It's worth the hour to go to them.
