Rick Sharp, Olathe East Kids Club Coach - 03/11/14 01:19 PM

Olathe East Kids Coach Rick Sharp is battling a serious illness of pancreatitis for the last 7 months. Rick has dedicated over 30 years to coach youth wrestling, starting in the Fort Scott area and the last 20 or so years in the Olathe area. Those of you that know Rick, know his passion for coaching the kids and his love of the sport.

Since the end of July, he has probably only been out of the hospital a total of 8 weeks with the longest time out being about 3 weeks. He has been in and out of ICU, on and off dialysis, spent about 2 weeks on a ventilator and is currently in the heart care unit at KU Medical Center. He is getting better but he has a long road ahead.

Every organ has been affected by his condition. He is currently on long term disability.

We would like to reach out to the wrestling community for your help. It would mean so much for him to receive a card or phone call. If you are in the KC area and could stop in to see him that would be great.

We are looking at raising some funds to help him and his family - more info will be posted on any organized fundraisers. If you are interested in making a donation, make payable to Richard Sharp/Medical Fund.

Send Cards or donations to Rick Sharp, 13225 S Brougham Dr, Olathe KS 66062. His family will get the cards to him since he could get moved around at the hospital. We know the cards will be great medicine for him to know that his wrestling family is thinking about him.
Feel free to contact Sean McCarthy smokeycabin@hotmail.com or 913-579-1835 or Kim Huck oejrhawkwrestling@yahoo.com or 913-558-4339 if you have any questions. We will be at District 1 South Subs in Pittsburg, the District 1 Tournament at Olathe East and then at State in Topeka

Please keep Rick and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they battle this illness.

Coach Sharp & family you shine Brightly through this time of year for our KS wrestlers that you enjoy watching grow into young men. Your generosity and hospitality will always be HAPPY TIMES remembering the incredible BBQ with all kinds of sides that is one fond memory I have outside your corner suite along with all the jokes & stories!

Pancreatitis is a tough & painful situation & associated with uncomfortable days/nights. Please know you & your family are in our thoughts & prayers daily.

Rick has now been in the hospital for the most part nearly 9 months. He is still at KU Med and is expecting another surgery soon - when he gets strong enough.

We will be doing a Golf Tournament/Cookout Benefit for Rick and his wife on May 17th in Gardner, Kansas. We will be putting a flier together this weekend - so more information to follow.
The tournament will be teams of 4 in a Scramble format - I will be getting some golf experts to help me with the Golf Format. "SCRAMBLE FORMAT" does not mean you can dive at the guys ankles on the green and roll across your back and get your head high and come out the back door for a takedown.

We have some Silent Auction Items, autographed footballs from some Chiefs players, Hall of Fame Linebacker Mike Singeltary autographed football, A Tom Watson autographed hat, Brett Favre picture with a Superbowl ticket, and I am working getting other items donated. There will also be prizes on some holes, and the 1st place and 2nd place team will also get some awards.

If you can put together a team of 4 guys email me at smokeycabin@hotmail.com. Or call (913) 579-1835 - cell. If you have any items to donate also contact me. RSVP NO LATER THAN - May 9th Golf and Meal per person $100
Meal/Picnic Per Person - $50

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Sean McCarthy

Our friend, Rick Sharp, is fighting for his life battling pancreatitis. He has been hospitalized most of the last 9+ months – in and out of the ICU, on and off dialysis, and is currently in the heart care unit at KU Medical Center. He has a long road ahead.
Rick spent nearly 19 years at Atmos Energy; and has coached youth wrestling for more than 30 years – 10 in Fort Scott, Kan., and the last 20+ in the Olathe, Kan. area. Rick has a true passion for coaching the kids along with his love for the sport.
Note for wrestlers: “Scramble” format does not mean you can dive at the other golfers’ ankles on the green, roll across your back and get your head high to come out the back door for a takedown! Golf etiquette will prevail on the course.
