Xavier Fisher-Pratt
Posted By: Husker Fan

Re: college bound ks seniors - 04/13/10 12:19 PM

Could you give me some background information on Xavier Fisher? I am looking for information such as high school he attended and possibly how he did in wrestling this year so I can make special mention if he qualified or placed at state. I also will want to get a confirmation from the wrestler himself, parent, high school coach, college coach or possibly a newspaper article announcement. I will try with the Pratt CC coach. Thanks.

Xavier placed 5th this year at 6A/285. He was also a 2X State Qualifier from Manhattan.

People underestimate the importance of that VA Beach Trip sometimes! Glad to see Cade gets some DI love!

Reminds me of Kendric Maple a bit. He did not have a single DI look until after VA Beach!

DON'T WAIT TO GET ON THE NATIONAL SCENE! Fargo, Fila's, VA Beach, etc! It might take some time and money, but will pay off with Scholarship money and success!!!

Again, Congrats Cade and the rest of the Kansas Wrestlers going to college to further improve their lives!

Brandon Vasquez of Dodge City High School (2009-2010 4th in State) has Committed to Labette Community College.

Re: college bound ks seniors - 04/13/10 07:03 PM

Xavier Fisher signed yesterday with Pratt Community college. We had a nice ceremony after school in the Little Theater at MHS. Vince thank you for taking the time to do the list. The Mahattan Mercury Joel Jellison wrote a nice article on Xavier back before the High School State tournament. Also should be a article in tonight newspaper. Xavier came out for wrestling last December and was finally eligible in January of 2009. He wrestled a year and a half and attend about 75-80 practices in that time frame. Nathan Broeckelman and Tim McCarthy worked after practice with X. Both Coaches gave excellent speech s yesterday about his work ethic and improved attitude toward school. X's best wrestling is in the future. He is currently wrestling with Manhattan Freestyle WC and Coach Mike Miller. I look forward to Coach Josh Carroll guiding Xavier in to the next level of college wrestling. We are six weeks from graduation and it will be close for Xavier. What was really cool after the signing Coach B. was working with X on his algebra. Xavier Fisher has made great strides to earn a diploma, three years ago I would not have been so sure.RMG

Thank you Eric and wscdc184 on your feedback. I am going to need to get some more verification of Brandon Vasquez but I will list him today pending further notification. EDIT: Brandon Vasquez status has been confirmed on a post in this topic today 4/14/2010 by his Dodge City High School head coach.

Coach Gonzales, I really enjoyed your post. I actually had the opportunity to watch Xavier on the final day at the BV Northwest Husky tournament that he won this year. I was very impressed. I agree with you that Xavier has a bright future in college wrestling and I think it is really going to be beneficial for him to work under new Head Coach Josh Carroll at Pratt. I think everyone would enjoy reading more stories like your post on Xavier on the young wrestlers that we will be recognizing in this topic.

Coach if you will send me a private message with your name or post it on this topic I will confirm Evon tonight also.

I have also sent a request into Coach Vest at Dana last night.

I do not mean to be difficult but last year I did a list update on a wrestler off of a post from a poster who did not leave their name and it proved to be incorrect. I do not want to list anyone as committed to wrestle unless they are since I know there are some college coaches who read this list last year and we do not want them to lose interest in possibly recruiting one of our wrestlers.

I really do appreciate your input. I just want to be careful so please just send me a private message confirmation that you are one of Evon's coaches. Thanks.

The point was that any one can say that I, "am Coach X and athlete Y is going to Iowa State." Hence supporting the gentleman that said he needed more info to post confirmed college bound seniors.

I had the privilege of meeting with and touring Xavier (Fisher), Manhattan HS, when he visited our campus. I found him to be a very humble yet engaging young man; quiet at first, but not for long!
PCC will be a very good fit for him academically as well as on the mat. He will receive a lot of individualized attention in the classroom, and will benefit from Coach Carroll’s mentoring on and off the mat.

Steven Cooksley (Topeka, Kan. - Seaman HS)
Cooksley will join the Jets after a successful career at Seaman High School in Topeka, Kan., where he posted a 96-36 career record. A two-time placer at the Kansas 5A State Championship, Cooksley finished sixth in the 189 lb. weight class in 2009, and capped his high school career with a third place state finish in 2010. Here is another private message announcement I received yesterday.

Micah Flora-Swick - from Gardner Edgerton will attend Cornell College and wrestle for the NCAA III Rams.

Micah is a two time state placer in 5A. Career 120-45. This year he tied the single season school win record at 39 (Tied with Isenberg and Curtis.) He won the Johnson County Classic tournament this year at 140.

Cornell is a selective private liberal arts college in Mt Vernon, Iowa. Cornell competes in the tough Iowa Intercollegiate Conference. Micah is projected to wrestler 141 next year.

This is quite a list of additions today with eight new wrestlers. Please watch me closely on this one because with so many there is a high chance of error and I want to correct any errors. Here goes:

Evon Royal of Junction City High School will be wrestling next year at Dana College. Here is what one of his coaches Stand Up King had to say about Evon:

Evon Royal (4-time state qualifier, 3rd in 2009, state runner-up 2010) will be signing with Dana College today. Great Kid and I wish him the best!

I will let also let their own coaches great description announce these two following wrestlers.

Re: college bound ks seniors - 04/17/10 02:36 PM

Thank you, Headup.

I found this website today after reading on a topic on the Mat.com concerning the value of wrestling in college. One poster recommended that the other posters look into an organization that was started by Joe Heskett a former champion college wrestler that is designed to help students, parents and coaches to learn how to apply the positive attributes gained in athletics to successfully apply to all aspects in life. It appears to be a worthwhile organization with a lot of good and free information for all. I think it would be especially worthwhile to share it with all young wrestlers entering college as they prepare for their college life and most importantly for their life after college.

http://www.hleadership.com/team-h/

I would recommend getting on the home page and to start exploring the website. It appears to have some good articles and information. Here is a message about it that I found in doing that.

Do you believe participation in sport can provide invaluable life lessons?

Do you believe sport can do more to benefit our youth and their long term life success?

Success is not automatic, it is developed. Education combined with positive influences and consistency unite for life success well after sport. The percentage of athletes that make it pro are discouraging if not down right demoralizing. Let’s prepare our youth to expect more from their participation in sport. Let’s do more then simply tell our youth and expect sport to instill concrete values and a sound core belief system. Let’s show our youth. Let’s educate them, empower them and build the confidence and awareness necessary to see beyond sports glory. Regardless of talent the real world awaits and preparation, exactly the same as sport, is a vital key.

Let’s unite and rebuild America’s youth by working together to educate, mentor and prepare all sport participants to find their personal greatness and transfer those talents to be successful in the most important game of all, life!

Welcome to the new h Leadership.

Re: college bound ks seniors - 04/18/10 08:12 PM

Today I wanted to feature one of our excellent 2010 senior wrestlers who has signed to participate in another sport in college. Mark Kolmer of Emporia High School has signed to play football next year at Washburn University. I have followed this Mark's wrestling career since he has been in about the sixth or seventh grade. I have always been impressed with his athletic skills since I first saw him wrestle. I think he is one of the best all around athletes that I have seen in the last five years in Kansas high school wrestling. You just don't see the three sport star athlete as much now in high school athletics. Mark was this type of athlete.

Here is what is reported about Mark on the Washburn football website in their recruiting announcements.

Mark Kolmer, Linebacker
6-1 | 212 | Emporia, Kan. | Emporia High School

Background: At Emporia High School, he was a unanimous all-Centennial league selection as a senior while earning second team all-league honors on defense as well as first team all-state honors at running back … rushed for 817 yards as a junior en route to honorable mention all-state honors ; finished third in state wrestling … finished second in the state in the javelin … earned second team offense and defense honors as a junior … as a sophomore he was a second team all-league pick on defense … also finished second in state in the javelin as well as second in state wrestling … as a freshman he finished sixth in wrestling and in the javelin … high school coach was Bill Lowe.

To complete Mark's wrestling resume, I will add that Mark was undefeated this year in winning 5A 215 with a 37-0 record. Mark is a four time state placer for Emporia also taking 3rd in 2009, 2nd in 2008 as a sophomore and he was 6th as a freshman in 2007.

We are going to miss you in wrestling, Mark. But I want to congratulate you on your great high school total athletic career. I wish you the best of luck in college with both your academics and football. Congratulations to your Mom and Dad, too. I will update the list above to include you in the other sports category on the list.

Doug, I did not know that about B.J. Finney. I was hoping that he was going to wrestle in college. I found this video about his intention to play football at K.S.U. next year.

http://videos.kansas.com/vmix_hosted_apps/p/media?id=10690419

B.J. Finney, of Andale High School, has decided to play football next year at Kansas State University. He was a standout 285 weight class wrestler in his four years at Andale. B.J. was fourth at State in 2008, 2nd at state in 2009, and was the 2010 State Champion. He was ranked No. 1 All Class in Kansas 285 this year by Eric Johnson, our own Chief Renegade. B. J. Finney was also an All Class All State Football Player this year. He impressed me as a great kid off the mat but a warrior on it. No doubt he could have been an outstanding college wrestler too but at 6 foot 5 inches and 280 pounds he may possibly have a pro football career in his future. B.J. Finney, congratulations and I wish you good luck in your academics and football next year at KSU.

I am going to add B.J. Finney to the 2010 Senior List above pursuing other sports section.

Re: college bound ks seniors - 04/19/10 10:40 PM

I have been notified of college intentions by their high school coach of two 2010 State Champions from Salina South High School.

Blaine Smith, of Salina South HS, 2 time State Champion including: State Champion 2010 as a senior, 3rd Place State 2009 as a junior, State Champion 2008 as a sophomore and 6th place State 2007 as freshman. Blaine Smith is planning on wrestling in college next year and is Undecided as to the school.

Jason Seibel also of Salina South HS, 3 time State placer including: State Champion 2010 as a senior, 4th place 2009 as a junior, state qualifier 2008 as a sophomore and 6th place 2007 as a freshman. Jason Seibel will play football next year at Butler County CC.

Congratulations to both Blaine and Jason on their state championship this year and all their high school accomplishments. We wish them good luck next year in their academics, wrestling and football next year.

The above list will be updated for this updated information.

I will list Nathan Reed of Colby High School for now in the Undecided but planning to wrestle in college section of the list above.

My research indicates that Nathan was a two time placer, including 3rd as a senior in 2010 and 5th as a junior in 2009 and a qualifier as a freshman in 2007. Congratulations to Nathan on your high school career and good luck in making your decision for your future college plans.

Re: college bound ks seniors - 04/20/10 10:44 AM

I was informed today that Chase Nitcher will be wrestling next year at the University of Missouri in the Big 12 conference. Chase Nitcher is from Valley Center High School. He has had a historic high school wrestling career. As a freshman at state in 2007 he finished 3rd with a 40-4 record, sophomore year he finished 2nd at state in 2008 with a 45-3 record. Chase won his first state title as a junior in 2009 with a perfect 50-0 record which also set the Kansas single season win mark. Chase won his second state with a 44-1 record. By my tally that gives Chase Nitcher a career record of 179-8 which I believe also is the Kansas career record for wins. Chase Nitcher was all ranked No. 1 All Class 135 in 2010 by Eric Johnson (Chief Renegade) and Chief's also gave Chase the special honor of being on his Fab Five list in 2010.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lucas Vincent of Olathe North will also be attending the University of Missouri but to play football. Lucas wrestled his first three years of high school and had a very good high schoool wrestling career. He was 4th at State as a freshman in 2007, 2nd as a sophomore in 2008 and State Champion at 6A 285 as a junior in 2009. Here is what the University of Missouri football recruiting page reports on Lucas as a high school football player:

LUCAS VINCENT (top)
Fr., DT, 6-3, 285
Olathe, Kan. (North HS)A tough and rugged player in the trenches who knows how to win … Finished his career on a team which went a perfect 13-0 and as state champions in 2009, while he’s also won a state wrestling individual title (going 34-1 in the heavyweight class) … His senior class went an outstanding 31-5 during his three years on varsity at Olathe North High School … Scout.com ranks him as the nation’s No. 23 defensive tackle prospect … Ranked by ESPN.com as the nation’s No. 42 defensive tackle prospect … Rivals.com ranks him as the No. 6 overall prospect at any position coming out of the state of Kansas, and also as the nation’s No. 48-ranked defensive tackle prospect … Had a big performance in January at the Offense-Defense Sports All-American Bowl all-star game in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he helped his team to a 35-0 win, thanks to his forcing a fumble and getting free for multiple quarterback sacks … Twice named a 1st-Team All-State performer on the defensive line ....

Besides his National Junior College Championship this year for Labette Community College, Chase was also first at the inaugural Kansas Cup this year and I believe he was twice a State Champion for Wichita Heights High School. This young man definitely has D-1 All American potential. That University of Oklahoma team is beginning to look like a Kansas High School All Star team!

Congratulations, Chase Nelson, good luck to you in your academics and wrestling at the University of Oklahoma next year. I am updating the below list for this information.

Re: college bound ks seniors - 04/23/10 02:42 AM

This just from a wrestling fan,

But I recall 112 6a state champ Dalton Miller from I believe Wichita Campus had signed or committed to ASU. Here is a link I found but doesn't give a lot of info:

http://www.thewrestlingtalk.com/?p=809

Also I recall an article that had been listed on the forums that showed 4X state champ Colt Rogers from Smith Center who signed with Pitt State for football. I searched for the link but didn't find it.

Just thought I'd mention them so as to give these young men credit for their accomplishments. If anyone is able to update this info that would be great.

Well that is what I was looking for. I was notified a couple of days ago in a private message about Colt Rogers signing to play football at Pittsburg State University and I felt that I needed to get confirmation from a parent or coach on Colt due to his incredible wrestling and football career. I have been trying hard over the last couple of days to verify but I was not having success. I really appreciate your posting this link. Here is what the Pittsburg State Football Recruiting Announcement had to say about Colt Rogers:

COLT ROGERS, 5-7, 155, FR, RB
Hometown: Smith Center, Kan.
High School: Smith Center
H.S. Coach: Roger Barta
Honors/Stats: A third-team Kansas Top 11 (All-State, All-Class) selection by the Wichita Eagle and Topeka Capital-Journal as a senior in 2009… a first-team Class 2A All-State performer… rushed for 1,935 yards during his senior season, helping the Redmen to a 12-1 record and the 2A state runner-up finish… compiled 4,600 career rushing yards as a four-year starter… helped Smith Center to three straight 2A state titles from 2006-08… the Redmen posted a 51-1 record during his four-year prep career… also a three-time state champion wrestler, helping Smith Center to three straight 321A state titles (2007-09)… also a state medalist in the pole vault and the 300m hurdles in track & field.

Colt Rogers like Mark Kolmer is a rare star three sport athlete. We can add that Colt Rogers joined a very rare crowd in winning his fourth Kansas state high school championship this year. He truly has had an historic high school athletic career and has to be considered one of the All Time Top Kansas Athletes.

Congratulations Colt Rogers and we wish you the best of luck in your academics and football at Pittsburg State University next year.

That deserves a new topic announcement for this three time state champion from Valley Center high school. I just posted a new topic on Cade's signing.

Congratulations to Cade and the entire Blair family. I know you are very proud of him and his accomplishments.

I will change his status above to no longer just a verbal committment. Thank you for the update.

My best guess would be that they have maxed out on scholarships from signing all those Ukrainian, Czech, and Mongolian wrestlers who wanted to pursue welding and automotive certificates.

I would just like to say that I think it is awesome that this many Kansas Wrestlers will be wrestling, playing football, or pursuing their career interests next year in college. No matter what level it is, this shows you the kind of competitors we have wrestling in Kansas. Congratulations to these young men on what they've accomplished, but don't let what you did in high school be the greatest thing you've ever done. Accomplish more and raise yourselves to a higher level. Work hard, stay in school and good luck to each and every one of you.

I really liked this post. It shows how much pride your high school and college coaches take in our high school athletes accomplishments in their athlethics and academic accomplishments. It also shows how they want them to excel in their studies in college and ultimately in life.

This does not stop in high school either. Here is a message I received from a former Neosho CC assistant wrestling coach Aaron Sweazy about one of our former high school wrestlers who wrestled for Neosho CC.

Although not continuing with wrestling, I am pumped for Justin Ringgold who was named STARS Male Student of the Year. Stars is a Student Support Service here on campus. Ringgold a former state runner up at WNW will be walking this week with his nursing degree. He plans on moving on and eventually finishing his doctorate at Texas Tech University.

I was able to confirm that Ryan Kincaid of Bishop Miege HS is listed as signing to play football next year at Fort Scott Community College. Ryan took 5th place at 285 5A State in 2010 and was a qualifier in 2009. Ryan was also a member of this year's Bishop Miege State Championship football team.

I was also able to confirm from the Missouri Valley head coach that Pat Cervantes of Bishop Miege HS has sign to wrestle next year at Missouri Valley College. Pat is a three time state qualifier including this year with a 31-9 record. Pat also was second in Juniors at Kansas State Greco and third in Freestyle this year.

The Missouri Valley College head coach confirmed with me also that Vance Oliver of Winfield HS and Kash Biddle of Ark City HS have also signed with Missouri Valley College.

Vance Oliver of Winfield HS is a two time state finalist placing second at State both in 2009 and 2010. Vance finished the year ranked 5th All Class at 140 in Chief Renegade's final rankings. He will be wrestling next year at Missouri Valley College.

Kash Biddle of Ark City HS is a four time state placer. He was fourth in 2007 as a freshman and 2008 as a sophomore. His junior year he was a state finalist placing second and he topped that with a state championship this year as a senior. Kash finished the year ranked 3rd All Class in Chief Renegade's final rankings. Kash will also be wrestling next year at Missouri Valley College.

I have not received confirmation yet on Nick Pearch.

Congratulations to all of you. Good luck to you in your academics and wrestling next year.

Re: college bound ks seniors - 05/30/10 02:20 PM

Cale Karigan of Paola High School has signed to play football next season at Pittsburg State University. Congratulations to Cale and good luck next year in your academics and fooball at Pittsburg State. Cale is a multi-sport athlete. Here is what one of his wrestling coaches Tony Brummer had to say about Cale's high school athletic career.

Quote:
Cale Karigan placed 6th at 285 in 4a from Paola. He never wrestled until he was a junior (he missed some weekend tournmaents on football recruiting trips). He also just placed 3rd in Shot Put and 4th in Discus at the 4a track meet (1 year of track). Cale played baseball his first 3 years of high school. He has signed to play football with Pitt St. next year.

Levi Schneider of Ellsworth signed a letter of intent to play football at Hutch. Levi qualified for state as a sophomore placing 6th that year (I believe) and again as a senior placing 2nd in a very close loss to Danny Floyd of Osborne in arguably one of the best matches in Hays at 321A tournament.

Dana College closing after 126 years
By TIMBERLY ROSS

Colleges in Nebraska and Iowa have agreed to take in students left in limbo in the wake of Dana College's sudden decision to close its doors.

The 126-year-old private college announced the closure late Wednesday, citing the Higher Learning Commission's refusal to back its sale to a group of investors. The commission would not transfer accreditation to the group of investors that announced plans to buy the school in Blair.

Dana officials were making arrangements Thursday to help its 600 to 650 full- and part-time students transfer elsewhere. More than a dozen schools, including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, agreed to accommodate them. Dana advisers were to meet with students next week.

"This is unfortunate news for these students and we hope all are able to continue their plans for higher education," said Juan Franco, UNL's vice chancellor for student affairs.

UNL agreed to waive its May 1 deadline for applications for fall semester for Dana students and help them enroll for housing and student aid.

Concordia University in Seward said it would match all Dana scholarships and had set up a hot line for students to reach admissions counselors over the Fourth of July holiday.

Several schools were also reaching out to faculty and staff. Dana spokeswoman Nikki Kinsey said schools were forwarding information about job openings to the college's roughly 130 employees.

A date for the closure has not been decided. Kinsey said the college was expected to be officially closed by July 31. It was unclear whether employees would be paid for any work in July, she said.

Dana's summer classes had been scheduled to run through July 28. Kinsey said a decision on whether those classes would continue would be made on a course-by-course basis.

The future of the campus was still being assessed, Kinsey said.

College officials announced in March that the Dana Education Corporation -- a group of investors and an unnamed private equity firm -- had agreed to buy the school. Terms of the deal, which was expected to close this summer, were not disclosed.

Dana has experienced financial problems and ran significant deficits for several years, and the announcement of a sale came after officials spent the past year evaluating their options.

Dana Education Corporation president Raj Kaji said his group was saddened by the commission's accreditation decision, which college officials called "inaccurate, unfair and based on speculation and information not included in the required change of control request."

Commission spokeswoman Susan Van Kollenburg said Thursday that the sale did not meet the commission policy's for school sales. She declined to elaborate.

The commission policy requires five things for sales: extension of the college's mission and educational programs; continuation of the college's historic affiliation with the commission in regard to its mission and objectives; likelihood that the college will continue to meet accreditation requirements; money to complete the sale; and the new owner's experience in higher education.

Van Kollenburg said the commission's decision leaves room for Dana to submit a new plan for the future. The college's accreditation continues until November if it doesn't close, she said.

Dana college was founded by Danes and has ties to the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Dana officials and the investors who had planned to buy the college had said they didn't plan big staff or program changes. Kaji, who previously served as an administrator at the online Walden University, had envisioned doubling enrollment and expanding study-abroad options

BLAIR, Neb. -- Dana College is closing its doors after 126 years - leaving more than 500 students without a school and dozens of professors without jobs only weeks before the start of the school year.

School officials announced the closing Wednesday night.

They blamed it on an accrediting body's decision earlier in the day not to reaccredit Dana if officials completed a planned sale of the college to a group of out-of-state investors.

On Thursday morning, they announced a series of student advising sessions, to be held at Dana next week, to ease transfers to the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Fremont’s Midland Lutheran College and other nearby schools.

Also Thursday, Midland’s president confirmed that he has offered 90-day contracts to each of Dana’s 18 head athletic coaches, as part of Midland’s plan to bring in as many Dana students, professors and coaches as possible.

In Blair, the campus community expressed shock, disbelief and a fair amount of anger that Dana was closing, particularly because school officials had portrayed the college as sound when they announced the school’s proposed sale in March.

“It kind of just feels we were lied to,” said Bo Darrow, 19, of Glenwood, Iowa, who expected to start his sophomore year as a secondary education major in August.

“When the corporation took over, they said everything was going to be fine ... now about a month before school starts, we don't even have a school anymore.”

The college did say it has cooperative agreements with the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Grandview University in Des Moines. It wasn't immediately clear how those schools would assist students interested in transferring.

Ben Sasse, president of Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, said his school would soon announce a plan to bring in Dana students and potentially some faculty members and staff.

College officials said more information for students would be posted on the college's website, dana.edu, as it became available.

Dana College, a private liberal arts school, was founded in 1884 by Danish Lutheran pioneers. It is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

The college made history this year when it became the first nonprofit college or university in Nebraska history to attempt the plunge into for-profit education.

Raj Kaji, CEO of the outside investment group planning to buy the school, told faculty, staff and students in March that he was planning to double enrollment while keeping Dana's longtime mission and campus intact.

“In 20 or 30 years, I will be able to say I helped move a college forward, save jobs and ensure consistent outcomes for students,” he said that day.

Those plans were sidetracked Wednesday by the Higher Learning Commission, Dana's accrediting body.

In a move that surprised the college's president and board, the commission said it wouldn't extend accreditation if the college were sold to the for-profit group.

The HLC cited numerous concerns relating to the investment group's lack of experience, the school's financial solvency and changes to the college's core liberal arts mission.

Without accreditation, Dana students wouldn't have been able to obtain federal financial aid and other benefits commonly needed for a college to remain open.

“We are devastated that despite meeting all requests and assiduously working to meet all requirements, the (HLC) decision does not allow for Dana's continuing operation,” said Dennis Gethmann, chairman of Dana's board of regents.

Marshall Hill, director of the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education, said a number of factors have long worked against Dana.

Many small, private liberal arts schools have been wounded by for-profit universities that teach only popular academic majors and spend millions annually on advertising, Hill said. And Dana hadn't changed to survive like other private colleges in the state.

Hill said he was surprised to learn during the reaccreditation process that the college had few online classes and lacked amenities, like extended cafeteria hours, that other schools long ago adopted.

The college also resisted pleas, from former donor Howard Hawks and others, to consolidate or more closely cooperate with Midland, another private Lutheran-affiliated school in nearby Fremont.

“I think Dana was just bled to death,” Hill said. “They just had no money for the kinds of investments in the sort of recruiting and advancements that they needed to survive.”

Vern Wirka, assistant professor of communication, said the closing leaves faculty members in the lurch. It's too late to get hired at another college for the coming school year.

“Maybe the spring semester somewhere, but the fall semester definitely not,” Wirka said.

Wirka, director of the campus radio and TV stations, wondered what he will do Thursday morning. Should he shut off the radio station? Contact the station's employees and deliver the bad news?

Jim Realph, Blair mayor, said many in town knew of Dana's struggles but few knew the extent of the college's financial problems.

The city has long benefited from the college's ability to employ hundreds of faculty and staff, he said, and the graduation of thousands of students, many of whom stayed in the city and became business and civic leaders.

“We've had companies who located here because of our college,” Realph said. “This is a tremendous, tremendous loss.”

So I wondered if it is a possibility that Midland Lutheran College of Fremont Nebraska will now offer a wrestling program? I hope so. This is really terrible for all the students, faculty and the Dana community. It does not leave them a lot of time to locate new situations for themselves for the Fall semester. As far as the Dana wrestling program itself again this is just a terrible result. This has been a very successful wrestling program with a recent NAIA national championship and a 9th place finish last year. There were a couple of Kansas wrestlers on last year's roster and as you can see from our list above they also had signed a couple of 2010 Kansas seniors to start wrestling for them next year.
