I heard, but didn't verify, that the Rineharts from Derby moved back to Ohio? Can someone verify?

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/06/10 10:01 PM

Great job. I think the Chief will love the competition. A few names are spelled incorrectly, some of the guys are at the wrong weights, Mumaw is hurt for at least half of the season, Conklin pinned Reed at Kids State last year, I think some of the 45's will go 40 which will shake things up, and I think there are a few FR missing that will make some noise too. One at Gardner, one in Russell, one in Fredonia, another at Rossville, and maybe a couple at SJA.

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/06/10 10:07 PM

Yeah I was really anxious to see how things would turn out so i did some research on my own im sure a lot of these kids will be at different weights but i gave it my best shot.

I think i got a few of the freshmen you were talking about:
Dustin Williams at 135
Taegan Lambott at 140

Where is Topeka Heights?

I like Jarin Brown in the mix at 285 and maybe Puckett from Bonner depending on his weight.

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/06/10 11:55 PM

Beware of these projected weights. At least a third of them are different from the projections given to me by their coach or straight from the wrestler.

Quagmire, you can call me at 913-484-3624.

Jarin Brown is going 189. He is only going to step on the scale with one foot.

There are definitely a lot of very good wrestlers on this list, some of the best for sure. Here is something that I took away from this post:

My son is going into his 10th wrestling season and will be a freshman this year. From this list:

7 - # of wrestlers he has had matches against
18 - # of matches against those seven wrestlers
2 - # of matches he won against those wrestlers
8 - # of past teammates
2 - # of teammates this fall

These statistics are just from my memory, which is a little shady at times. If anyone else wants to throw some stats out from their personal experience, I think it would be fun to see.

Ryne is in his Senior year, his 14th year. He has wrestled 24 of Quag's list. I have NO idea how many matches against them. I do know he was like 2-13 against John Mehl who graduated last year. smile The 24 have 11 state championships between them. Reese has wrestled 9 of these ranked wrestlers. I hope to see his name on Chief's list before the season is over. Good luck to everyone this season. I hope to see many of you next weekend at Oak Park Staley for the Fall Brawl.

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/07/10 12:27 PM

I was reviewing some brackets and I think Tyler White out of Cimmaron at 215 may be a dark horse to watch for in 2011 season. He had some solid victories and was a state qualifier as a sophomore in 2008, got hurt in the semis of regionals this year with over 30 wins in his belt.
Posted By: dagwood

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/07/10 01:04 PM

I would bet Tyler White will be at 285 this year. Last year he had a pretty decent cut to 215 and I doubt he will want to make it again. He will most like switch places with Zach Fields who wrestled 285 last year but is currently at about 220 or 225.

Bo Pursel will start at 125 then probably drop to 119, He weighs about 127-128.

Konnor Kriss would have to cut off a leg to make 125

Yeah I figured he would do that. Im sure a lot of wrestlers will probably drop a weight class before state. It seems to be the trend these days. Bo could compete with anyone at any weight though so why drop?

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/07/10 03:28 PM

Thanks Quagmire, your Pre-Season rankings list is cool. I love lists and stuff like that. I love Chief's list and it is nice to see another take. Do agree with what Chief said about the weights. Just looking at 135 and down, many of the kids will never make those weights. But it is good to get their names out and you obviously put some time and effort into your selections which I appreciate.

As for ReDPloyd's offer, I will bite.
Lincoln Lemon of Goddard has wrestled 21 of the kids over the last 10 years and has beaten over half of them. Based on Quagmire's list, he should be "ranked" at 130, probably 7 or 8. He beat one of the selections twice this past season and won the Classic this past spring in a bracket that had two of those "ranked" individuals. Additionally, Witten has moved to Oklahoma. Not too concerned about the "rankings" right now because he can earn that later although I feel he already has. He wasn't ranked last year in 6A going into state and he placed. But if all those other names are getting props, he certainly deserves that as well.

But again, awesome job Quagmire.
And yes, best wishes to all.
And Chief, can't wait.

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/07/10 04:10 PM

Just because you place at State the year before, does not mean that you are on the top 10 list.
There are many variables in each weight class.
Posted By: Bender

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/07/10 04:17 PM

I believe Matt Schneider (junior wrestled 135 at phillipsburg) should be on your list at 140 or 145 (not sure on his weight). He placed 4th at Kid's state pinning JR Roman (ranked 10th 140), beat Dakota Hayes (placed 6th 145 4A), and beat Patrick Weaver (ranked 9th 152).

Uh duh.
Are you talking to me? Because if you are, I just gave you the "variables". Did you not read the entire comment that I made? If the kid has wrestled over 20 of the kids on the list in matches that I witnessed first hand, then I think that I am well aware of the "variables". I think when you have two victories head to head recently, you do not need any more criteria. That is a no-brainer. Unless you have an A beat B, B beat C, C beat A thing. Additionally, if you have beaten over 10 of the kids on the list then well....I am sure that is worth mentioning and would be considered a very important "variable".
I just mentioned the state placing thing to show that rankings don't matter in the end. In the end what matters is what you do at state. That is the measure and that is how you are remembered.
But hey, thanks for the info.

Yeah i have made a few changes on my list that I was gonna post tonight before Chief does tomorrow just to see how close i got to his rankings. I moved Konnor to 130 which made me decide to put Licoln Lemon in the mix at 25. One thing you learn as you do these rankings is you can't necessarily look at a wrestlers best tournament, his last tournament, or what he did at state the year before whether it was at kids state or high school state. You have to look at the overall performance. Also, wrestlers that put the work in over the summer should also have the nod over kids that did not, JMO. Like Tyson Schreiner said, there are many variables that go into how you rank kids, and you don't fully understand that until you have tried it your self

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/07/10 08:45 PM

I apologize if my comment sounded rude. Let me just say that this was a comment in general. I am sure that you are correct in saying, that this kid should be ranked.
One of the variables that you mentioned was that he has beaten 10 of the kids on the list. That is out of 140 kids listed. I am assuming that the 10 kids that he beat are spread out over many weight classes since it has been ten years time. You also mentioned that he won a tourney with two of those kids listed, but you did not mention whether he faced either one of them.
With different wrestling styles involved,( this is a general statement), sometimes one kid can have another kids number, and still not be an overall better wrestler.

I was just obsereving Quags list Hattabaugh 171 ranked 8th.I know its just preseason but come on i have watched him wrestle his whole life and give him all the respect in the world for trying to finish the season last year with a bad hip you should to.

Look at who is above him:
Matt Reed- Fargo Runner up
Reece Conklin- Returning State Champ
Jake Delp - 3rd at 215 in 4a last year
Devon Keith- Returning State Champ
Spencer Wilson- Fargo all american (had to wrestle JV last year because Reece Conklin was his teammate)
Tyler Baughman- 3rd at state last year
Taylor Baird- 3rd place in Jake Hattabaugh's bracket at state last year.

Im not saying Jake isn't better than any of the above kids but you have to give credit to the kids who deserve it too.

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/07/10 11:39 PM

Hate to tip my hand but Taylor Baird is going 189, Butler 215 and Tyler Baughman can beat Wilson ten out of ten times. Too many other problems to mention but at 9am tomorrow, you can change all of these up. smile

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/08/10 12:27 AM

Hmmm Well thanks for the info there. I will make those changes except for the Baughman Wilson comment. A lot of people underestimate Spenser Wilson but he's a Fargo all american who has obviously shown he can wrestle with anyone. I'm not saying Baughman can't beat him but saying ten times out of ten is a bold statement.

No Trent from Dodge City at HVWT? Only losses in 09-10 to Page and Rice. Second place at 6A state.

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/08/10 01:24 AM

quagmire wilson should be behind Penka, Baughman and Hattabaugh
all three of them would beat him 10 out of 10 times. spenser is a good kid and has become a good wrestler but he is not at this level yet

Not to worry. Trent will be ranked tomorrow in the All-Class rankings.

jason perez beat hake at state, he beat calderon at goodland 9-5 and would have placed higher then morgan but lost to muligen by a point in the heartbreak round. also beat dustin reed in a duel if that means anything

Calderon will be 119.

Just saying he did beat reed by 1 but then the next day reed won 7-2 and at regionals 7-2 so that doesnt show much there and mulligan looked bad at state once he lost by a very questionable call to state champion bryce shoemaker so be carefull there and calderon isn't that big of an impressive win reed pinned him at Newton and was trashing him before the match ended so he lost to a lot of kids just because you place at state doesnt make you an impressive wrestler but perez is still a good wrestler just make sure you look at all the stats

Ever heard of Oliver Pierce? He's one of the top ranked wrestlers in Texas and Spenser beat him! Pierce has wins over Penka! Again Fargo All American goes pretty far. You can't assume that they would beat him 10 out of 10 times. Spenser obviously put in his time this summer and competed with some of the best kids in the nation. The kid has earned my respect a long with everyone else who placed and won Fargo.

Last years results said he was a senior so i did not include him. It must have been a typo. Sorry honest mistake.

Hines will be 125 at the heaviest

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/08/10 03:14 AM

Spenser is improving and he is a good kid so I hate to see the debate but Quagmire you need to have a reality check. Spenser lost to Brandon Vukas at the Sunflower State Games, yes he beat Oliver, big win, but Oliver beat him in Freestyle the next day, Pierce was up a weight class and is clearly (Being a National Champ) better at Freestyle. Spenser is a soph and doing everything to get better but I would have to see him beat Baughman or Penka head to head before I would put him that high. I think it is a disservice to young Spenser. He placed 8th in GR in Fargo, awesome but that was in Cadets this is Cadets and Juniors. Oh yeah, when and where did Pierce beat Penka? Moeder beat Pierce last year at the Oklahoma open at 135 so I am guessing it has been YEARS since Pierce and Penka wrestled.

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/08/10 04:53 AM

To answer your question Mr. Cokeley, the last time I wrestled Pierce was at Folkstyle Nationals in 2009, losing 5-7, in Cadet 135. He went on to win the bracket, and I took 3rd.

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/08/10 08:05 AM

Jonathon Peterson from hutch will not be at any higher weight than 125. He made 119 for fargo this summer and has been running cross country he is only weighing around 130 right now. Also Jonathon should be above Aspen Kmiec fro, Shawnee I believe they have wrestled a total of 4 times and Jonathon has won 3 of those and lost to Kmiec for 3rd at kids state with a highflyer in the 3rd period

And Chris Sullivan from hutch will not be at 103 he has gained alot of weight and will most likely be at 112

Cole Schreiner at 140 wrestles for Topeka Seaman. I wish we could claim him at Shawnee Heights, he is a good one.

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/08/10 12:58 PM

XGHSWC, here is a question for you. Cass Steele wrestles for Jeff West High, his freshman year he took 5th at state at 103. His sophmore year he broke his foot, and it pretty much ended his year. Last year, which was his junior year, his arm was completely broke in half in a match early in the year, and ruined his season again. This year he will be wrestling 145. Cass has beat, including Bo Pursel, the first 8 wrestlers in Quagmeir's 125lb. ranking, not to mention many others. Do you think he should be ranked?
I don't think so.

I like his ranking, yes, alot of the weights are way off, but so are some of the Chiefs'. Yes, I know coaches are saying where they want their kid to be, but alot of these kids are growing. From following the summer wrestling I see both polls have kids at too low of weights.

College sports have more than one poll and I am sure Quagmires' Rankings will improve with practice. Remember in capitalism we need competition. Its the good ole American way. I waiting to see if he tries to rate the top ten teams also.

Chief, look at some of your weights and the weights they are going at Fawl Brawl, I do not believe some of those kids are going to make the weights their coaches probably want them too, but only time will tell. It will be interesting. Love following your poll, and enjoyed your competition. John

Re: Quagmire's Pre-Season Rankings - 10/13/10 01:20 AM

Almost all of the differences are a weight or two higher because it's October. Dillon Scanlon for example is entered at 160 but will wrestle 152 for Lansing.

Totally agree and I do.

Agree, but not if the other kid is doing track and baseball. He should not be "punished" because he is doing other sports, and especially if he did the Classic, Subs, District, State and Brute Nationals at the same time.

I totally understand, I have tried it and I have been doing it with weights 135 and down for the last 10 years.

And sorry for the belated response Quagmire, I have been away.
Keep up the good work.

Sorry for the belated reponse Tyson, I have been away.
Thank you.
Yes, spread out from 103 to 135.
Yes, the Classic. He won the 125 bracket. He did not beat "the two kids" there , but he beat a kid in the semis that beat one of "the kids" and he beat a kid in the finals that beat "the other kid". He did beat one of "the kids" twice before that just recently though.
Yes, I understand styles and having a kid's number. Wrestled in high school and college, 20 years as a high school head coach. I have seen it, lived it.

Cass has beat, including Bo Pursel, the first 8 wrestlers in Quagmeir's 125lb. ranking, not to mention many others. Do you think he should be ranked?
I don't think so.

Howdy again Tyson.
Sorry for the belated response again, I have been away.

As for your question, I cannot say. I am not the "ranker" here so it doesn't matter I guess. I am fully aware of Steele. He is one of those kids I have been watching for 10 years. I do know he is dang good and probably good enough to be ranked but should he be? Not for me to say but probably not because he has been out some time. Plus, he will get his opportunity to prove were he is at now.
I am confused though as to why you have asked me this question. Completely unrelated to any of my comments, not a good comparison if that is what you were doing. I was talking about a kid that has wrestled straight through, the last 10 years. Also has done the Classic and the Kids State series every year, won it this year in the high school division at 120. Has wrestled FS. And has been to Brute the last two years placing 5th and 3rd.

Thanks again.

Ok, I am sorry Quagmire, Chief, Tyson, whoever, etc. that I have not been specific enough for you. I have been vague I see because I really didn't want to promote one kid's name at the sake of anothers.
Apparently I will need to do that to get this info through to you.

Lemon of Goddard has beaten Peterson twice this last season. No disrespect to Peterson because he is dang good. Both placed at HS state at 119. Lemon lost to Beasley in the semis and Norris in OT on the back side. Lemon then won a 125 pound bracket at the Classic that contained Peterson, Kmiec, Henely and Stewart all state medalist along with qualifiers, T. Johnson and B. Johnson, Rodriguez and yes, Krista Revelle. He also beat Henely earlier in the season. Lemon then won the 120 pound bracket in the high school division at Kid's State in a bracket were state medalist T. Kolterman was 5th. Also placing in the bracket was state medalist G. Wright and qualifiers Gulley and Dakin. Also in the bracket were Pfannenstiel, Berends and Heim. Lemon then placed 3rd at Brute/adidas Nationals going 5 and 1 losing in the semis to an undefeated state champion from South Dakota. The whole time he ran track and qualified for state. He was in great shape and is as he is running cross-country now like Peterson and is also a CC state qualifier. He has split with Dremel and Wrestler.
He is pretty dang good. He will probably start at 130. May go 125, may not, we don't want to be at the Y every night after practice.

I probably should have just taken Moeder's advice and started the "Totally Legit Lightweight List" but that would draw way too much attention to myself and would leave me vulnerable to crass, albeit very funny, comments from Beeson and smokeycabin.

I do really appreciate Chief and Quagmire's Lists and efforts though. I really do enjoy the lists.

Thanks and have a great day! Now let it fly.

Even as good as I was, don't think I could have taken on two studs at the same time (say cheese):) No wonder these two are ranked so high!

Thiabault wrestled for Halstead last year, correct? Did he move/transfer?

That is correct he did wrestle for Halstead last year. I believe Quagmire may have just had a typo, because I have not heard anything about him transfering
