2011 Wrestlers of the Year..

2011 Wrestlers of the Year.. - 02/16/11 03:23 AM

Early but who looks to be the 2011 WOY in each classification, and for All Kansas WOY.

My vote right now would be Moeder from SJA for both 4A and All Kansas WOY. Expect him to repeat as state champ. Smooth, smooth, smooth. Has faced and beat tough competion in-state and out-of-state.

If Moeder is not the Man, then has to be Cokely, also from SJA, for both 4A and All Kansas.

Could see a politically conscious split. One 4A WOY and the other Kansas WOY. But, how make one the 4A WOY and then say there is a better 4A wrestler who is Kansas WOY (does this make sense??).

321A, 5A and 6A possibles WOYs? Speak up early.

Any others besides Moeder or Cokely for Kansas WOY?

And yes, I know that we still have regionals and state to wrestle.

Both would be good choices......today. Problem is the season is not even close to being over.

This is like the tournaments that want the coaches to fill out their outstanding wrestler ballots before the finals start, and in the end there will not be anything close to a consensus on the matter.

Tannenbaum, Conklin, Little! With Tannenbaum beating the top guys in 123a, 4a, 5a, (Lambotte, Blackwell, Johns not sure if any of the 3 scored on him even?) hard not to give it to him if he finishes undefeated! Littles only loss coming to Bontz at a heavier weight, Conklin beating big Crutchmer and undefeated you can make a case for him every year! Bontz in 5a considering he's beat Collins, Blew, Little?

In my mind there are currently 4 locks. I have 12 wrestlers competing for the final spot!

Be hard to pass over Cokely if he wins his 4th State--regardless of his 1 or 2 (??) losses this year.

Isd he not going for the 4th???

Tough calls- do you give the wrestler of the year just based on this year's performance or over a career?
For example, DeShazer and Cokeley are two of the overall best wrestlers in the state but you could argue that this year has been somewhat down for both of them compared to previous years-
Little is having a fantastic year and should be in the running for 6A wrestler of the year, but overall past few years have been somewhat mediocre...
4 shoe-ins should be: Moeder, Tannenbaum, Cokeley, Conklin both for this season and their overall career performances

If your saying wrestling of the YEAR. it has to go to taylor if he wins state he hasnt been beat and has been killing the compatition. Career wise it i think cokeley deserves it being if he wins out and gets his 4th state championship. But wrestler of the year goes to Taylor Moeder if he wins out. He is having a great season without a lose. Cokeley has lost.

Ryne hasn't really had an "down" year. He isn't cutting any weight. He has wrestled or had all of the guys below in his bracket at a tournament this year. He beat a 3x OK State Champ. His losses are to Oliver Pierce, 2x Fargo National Champ and Christian Loges a 3x NE state finalist/2x champ (a guy he had beaten four times before.) There has been lots of travel, senioritis, college visits, ACT tests, snow days, and other distractions.

152:
2. Chase Sanchez - 12 - EMP - 5A - 26-2
4t. Connor Middleton - 11 - ONW - 39-1
4t. Dillon Scanlon - 12 - LS - 5A - 33-3

8. Jonathan Heiman - 11 - GC - 6A - 33-5
9. Colton Duhr - 11 - AN - 4A - 25-6

He will see these guys at state.
3. Sam Son - 11 - CH - 4A - 33-0
7. Kane Kelly - 11 - AB - 4A - 31-2

Don't other wrestlers have the same distractions?

Yeah but you have to realize this is not a down year for cokeley i dont think anyone truly realizes the competition that Saint James seeks out and wrestles it is two levels beyond anyone else in the state of KS.

Question on the procedure to select WOYs:

At or after the State for the Classification WOY? Who votes?

When select Kansas WOY and who are the voters?

Do they do the Classification WOY and then seclect the Kansas WOY from those 4?----Or can they pick two from one class (one as the class WOY and the second as the Kansas WOY)? I commented on this in the first post on this topic. This could be a real issue for Moeder and Cokely. Hard to over either, but a possibility.

Because of the Moeder-Cokely issue, why not pulish the criteria and procedures to select the WOYs. Solve any possible disputes and arguements early.

Regardless of who are the WOYs, will generate an ungodly number of post selection comments (buts? whys? why not? xxx beat yyyy? in kids wrestling zzz won .......... etc. etc.)

There is no official Wrestler of the Year. There is a Senior of the year, I believe.

I have posted a Fab Five for the past two years. They are in alphabetical order and are not restricted to Seniors.

The previous two Fab Five's:

Fab Five - 2010:

Cade Blair - VC
Ryne Cokeley - SJA
Parker Madl - BV
Taylor Moeder - SJA
Chase Nitcher - VC

FAB FIVE - 2009

Boaz Beard - GD
Tyler Caldwell - GD
Kyle Detmer - BC
Kendric Maple - WH
CJ Napier - COL

Intresting.

Do you as the ranker individually name the WOYs?

Would think it would ba a coaches vote at STATE for each class WOY , then KWCA selects for the Kansas WOY.

In 2009 there were three 6A (2 GD, 1 WH,) 1 5A, 1 4A, and don't know if BV was 5A or 6A (6A I think--they moved down to 5A this year). No 321A.

In 2010 four 4A (2 SJA and 2 VC) and 1 6A (BV). No 321A or 5A.

Appears to be no criteria that selects a WOY for each class.

Again, would think there would be a WOY from each classs and the Kansas WOY from one of those four.

Re: 2011 Wrestlers of the Year.. - 02/18/11 02:44 PM

I have never heard of an official "wrestler of the year" award.

The fab five thing was kind of cute but reminds me of bb

The person who stated that cokely was having a down year must be confused. I would have loved to had a "Down Year" like his.

I have appreciated the attitude of SJA to try to wrestle the best possible.

That is the only way to improve and you can see it in the other SJA wrestlers.

Thought there was a WOY. If not, why not?

I think there is a PoY for BB. Is not Reed from Burlington KS(??), now a KU BB'er, a Kansas BB PoY.

If I remember correctly, Clint Caton from Lansing, 1996 4A 160 champ, was announced as a WOY (later wrestled at Missouri).

The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association nominates a "Senior Wrestler of the Year" for the four classifications.

Thanks Richard.

Why do they not do a Kansas WOY from the 4 class WOYs---are do they think that is overkill!

I have no doubt Ryne is an excellent wrestler, but i am somewhat confused by some of your statements. Is Ryne the only senior wrestler who has senioritus or has to take ACT's or has college visits, and did it only snow there. If so he most definitely is deserving of this prestigious award. I wish Ryne the best of luck throughout regions and i wish him the best of luck to win his 4th.

Re: 2011 Wrestlers of the Year.. - 02/19/11 02:33 AM

There are many outstanding wrestlers that deserve consideration, however if the current wrestlers continue to win state 4A wrestler of the year is a hands down Moeder. He will have been something like 100-2 over his last matches with 3 state championships and one third place. He is one of the few Kansas Fargo Junior Champions in greco and all-american in freestyle- this year. He has beaten many nationally ranked kids and also has been dominant through out the season. He was one of the first seniors this year to sign with a D1 program and he has improved significantly every year. He moved up to beat Nichter last year and has improved every year. I do not know of any other 4A wrestler who comes even close with the above credentials.

I agree with Geyer ... Salmans deserves strong consideration!!

Re: 2011 Wrestlers of the Year.. - 02/19/11 01:22 PM

The true wrestlers of the year are those kids in the consolation semi-finals of regionals- win and they go to state, loose and they go home. These are the kids on the cusp of taking that next step, they are the ones that truly make the Moeders and the Cokeleys of the world better wrestlers- they are the ones that might not get much recognition but as adults they can say "I qualified for state and it showed me what hard work can do"...

Re: 2011 Wrestlers of the Year.. - 02/19/11 05:39 PM

I completely agree with Anklepick, my opinion probably means nothing, but from the outside looking in, Moeder is a man amongst boys. He is the Alan Waters of Kansas. He completely dominates the best kids in Kansas. He is like a ranked D1 wrestler that has come back to wrestle high school. I also agree that he continues to improve each year significantly. You can tell by the scores of the matches, where he make our second best kids feel like maybe they forgot how to wrestle. There are other D1 prospects here, but none dominate in the same fashion, not even close. If Kansas has one kid that has the best chance of placing in the NCAA tourney their freshmen year, its hard to argue that it won't be Taylor Moeder.

Just to back up what I said earlier, Taylor beat the #5 all class wrestler, Aaron Puckett, by pin today in the finals.
