Johnson County Classic Thoughts - 12/12/11 02:18 AM
Looking forward to this tournament next weekend and I have put together a list of wrestlers to keep an eye on. I really think 120 will be loaded given the guys in that weight class. I forsee Hensley coming up to have the chance to wrestle Dulgarian.
You could be looking at some exciting championship matches at 106, 120, 138 and heavyweight. Especially given that Mason-Callahan along with Williams-Humphrey squared off last week at Eudora in great matches. Henes and Cokeley should be an interesting match if it happens.
However, I am curious thoughts from other folks on guys to keep an eye on and also any additional insight on the tournament.
106 Luke Henes, Reese Cokeley
120 Isaac Dulgarian, Zak Hensley, Gavin Jorns, Chandler Gordon, Corey Spader
126 Jacob Parise, Tyler Dickman, Grant Hollingsworth
132 Ben Randolph
138 Reis Humphrey, Tommy Williams (they had a great semi-finals match at Eudora)
145 Dustin Williams
160 - Connor Middleton
285 Eric Mason, Zach Callahan

Re: Johnson County Classic Thoughts - 12/12/11 02:24 AM
Reese Cokeley is going to be at 113.
Rory Haug I heard will be dropping to 152. A match up between him and Middleton would be nice.

Should be a good one, im excited and looking forward to the Johnson county classic, it's a great tournament. All the college kids are back to root on the there old High School teammates.
Kainisable is right, there will be some good revenge rematches from this past weekend in Eudora, which was a fun tournement to watch. Very well ran I thought, besides the seeding criteria. Their should be several good matches this weekend at the JCC.

Re: Johnson County Classic Thoughts - 12/12/11 04:04 AM
At this date it has not been determined if Reese will be at 106 or 113 and Zak could be at 113 or 120. Coach Medina will determine this before the deadline. GO THUNDER!

What weight is Hensley wrestling. Im a little confused on the SJA situtaion

Re: Johnson County Classic Thoughts - 12/13/11 01:15 AM
To answer your question I have to think from what I have heard that it is highly likely Hensley will make the move up to 120. So if that is where he ends up I wouldn't be surprised. He has wrestled many matches against Isaac Dulgarian with several being close (most recent being kids' state finals this year where he lost 3-0) and I have a feeling he would like to face off against him since he would only have one other chance at the Bobcat in January due to being in different classifications. It is just my 2 cents for what its worth.

Re: Johnson County Classic Thoughts - 12/13/11 09:16 PM
Hopefully the spirit of the seeding meeting will be to seperate the two best kids in each weight. For that, you can throw all of the BS critieria out the window. Your wins are only as valuable as who they were obtained against.

Re: Johnson County Classic Thoughts - 12/13/11 10:11 PM
If you're referring to freshmen getting hosed at seeding meetings, I've seen it before many times. Another good one at seeding meetings is when the criteria is what place you took at that particular tourney the year before, and a new team shows up(or of course a freshman would be treated poorly here also), and they could have 22 state champions in their lineup, and none of them would get seeded.........
Posted By: Chief Renegade
Re: Johnson County Classic Thoughts - 12/14/11 12:03 AM
That is ridiculous. I was glad to take the 2 seed at Gardner, even though my wrestler was a state runner-up and placed at Gardner last year, vs. an Iowa kid who "only" took third at state but was a Fargo National Champion! A coach that would take that 1 seed just doesn't get it.
He took 2nd and got majored by the way, to an Iowa signee!

Re: Johnson County Classic Thoughts - 12/14/11 01:43 AM
Typically, it is an AD that "runs" the tourney, that doesn't understand how it should work, and sets his rules, and doesn't budge from them.
Last year at Pratt, the first match at 145 was between the eventual 4a state finalists at 145. It was Andale's first year at the tourney, so no placing at their tourney meant no seeds........
Guess you have to beat them all, but if we are going to bring fans to this sport, we want the finals matches that everyone comes to, to be between the two best kids. We have to make that happen. Begging for a seed for your kid that doesn't deseerve one is horse crap. Oh well, some folks just don't get it.

that is the long and short of if. One one side there is an AD that won't budge for some kind of rule, and the other a coach that says
"Well my kid had a great week of practice and should have a better seed" or my favorite,
"he had _____on his back last year!"

Re: Johnson County Classic Thoughts - 12/14/11 04:57 PM
The first question to every seeding meeting should be "Do we know who the best two wrestlers in this group are? Throw out the state placings, last year's tournament, all of that garbage except a head-to-head match up this year. Quit punishing the outstanding freshmen. Any HS coach who doesn't understand what a Fargo AA is or how tough winning a Roller event is, shouldn't be coaching. The CK kickoff is as tough as any HS tournament and if you don't believe that you have NO business attending a seeding meeting. If you want to use the hair splitting criteria beyond the top two, knock yourself out. We make a huge deal out of the finals so everyone should focus on trying to make sure the BEST match up is made possible through the seeding. After four years of listening to the CRAP that goes on in these seeding meetings, I think it is time for some folks to step up and get it right. SEEDING IS ABOUT SEPERATING THE BEST WRESTLERS!

I agree - For too many the seeding fight is to keep your kid on the opposite side of the bracket of the best kid.

Some other non ranked wrestlers that will compete. Matt McKee from BVW will add to a deep weight class at 160. Currently undefeated and placed 6th at state at 152 last year. Nadir Zayad BVW heavyweight, also currently unranked has one loss this year in the finals to Will Geary top ranked heavyweight in the state. Lost 5-2 in a match that was closer than the score indicates. Logan Mueller at 106 at BVW was ranked at one point this year, is undefeated and placed 5th last year at 103 at JOCO.

Johnson County Classic provides stage for cross-class wrestling matchups
St. Thomas Aquinas won four of its five championship bouts in capturing the Johnson County Classic Wrestling title Saturday at Blue Valley.
The Saints won the title for the first time since 2006 and the sixth time in the 18-year history of the meet.
advertisement
Aquinas had 260.5 points, edging second place Gardner Edgerton by 43 points. Defending champion St. James Academy placed third at 210, and Shawnee Mission East was fourth with 205 points in the 22-team event.
They were focused on what they had to do today, Aquinas coach Lorne Parks said. Our main strategy was to get those first-place points. They worked hard and were focused in practice.
The Saints got victories in the lowest and highest weight classes.
Junior Luke Henes improved to 13-0, beating Blue Valley West sophomore Logan Mueller 4-1 at 106 pounds. Henes finished second last year at 103.
I am a lot bigger this year, Henes said. I can actually make my weight.
Saints senior Eric Mason edged Zach Callahan of Mill Valley at 285. The bout went to a one-minute overtime and three 30-second overtime periods before Mason escaped with a second to go in the third 30-second overtime for a 3-2 win.
That is the way it is with those two, Parks said. It can almost be a coin flip as to who will win.
Mason improved to 14-1.
Aquinas also got wins from freshman Isaac Dulgarian at 120 pounds and senior Tommy Williams at 138.
Dulgarian beat Zac Hensley of St. James Academy 9-3.
The guys in high school wrestling are stronger and older, said Dulgarian, who improved to 14-0 and was voted the most outstanding wrestler.
Williams led Jake Ellis 8-3 at the end of the first period of his title match. Ellis couldnt continue because of an injury to his left arm, giving Williams the victory by injury default.
Williams placed second last year.
It is a different year and different people, he said. I wanted to do well because of all the people who come to this tournament.
Gardner Edgerton senior TJ Stokes, who won the title at 126 pounds, was voted the most outstanding senior wrestler by the coaches. He pinned Tyler Dickman of Mill Valley with 28 seconds left in the first period.
This was the second Johnson County Classic title for Stokes.
My brother Tyler won twice here, he said. So I guess I tied my brother.
Olathe Northwest senior Connor Middleton, the defending Class 6A champion at 152 pounds, won the 160-pound championship.
He led SM East senior Blake Hill 3-1 going into the third period of the final. He was in the top position and held it until there were just three seconds left in winning 3-2.
I was just trying to hang on, said Hill, 12-1. I knew that we were equal on our feet.
SM East senior Ben Randolph placed fifth last year at 130, but this year pinned sophomore Jaquwan Stone of BV Northwest with 45-seconds left in the 132-pound title bout.

Re: Johnson County Classic Thoughts - 12/18/11 01:09 PM
Congratulations to the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints wrestling team on this impressive win.
What I found to be impressive was the way both upper classmen and freshman and sophomores (BTW Luke Henes is a sophomore not a junior as the KC Star article states)are all contributing to the success of this team. This is a very balanced team thru all the classes. Freshman Isaac Dulgarian is a very impressive high school wrestler. Congratulations to him on winning the outstanding wrester award. Also great job by the team's seniors who are providing excellent leadership for the squad this year.

Re: Johnson County Classic Thoughts - 12/19/11 12:00 AM
Here are some thoughts about this weekend wrestling:
----Thank you Blue Valley for a great run tournament. So fun to see all of the schools cheering for their wrestlers.
----"Father Time" is in the house! I heard that Carl had retired. That must have been a rumor?
----GE wrestled well over the weekend placing 7 and one more out of pool into brackets.
-----The past 5 years GE has placed 1st two times and second three times. Losing to Mill Valley by .5 point. (if father time would have gotten down to call a pin in the finals we would have won....but I am not bitter) once to St. James and now to Sta. Pretty good for a public school.
----Witnessed one of the classiest things in sports when TJ Stokes dedicated his championship bracket and medal to Lizzie Flora-Swick. It blew me away, and really blessed Elizabeth. Thank you TJ!
----I hope the young man who was injured Saturday morning is ok.
Look forward watching more wrestling in the New Year!
