321 rankings? - 01/11/12 03:05 AM

Why have the 321 rankings not been updated since Dec. 13?

Re: 321 rankings? - 01/11/12 03:12 AM

They were sent to Cosmo yesterday night for posting on the KWCA website. That is where I have been sending them as opposed to posting them on the forum. Got the www.kansaswrestling.org

Gilliand from P-Ville is back from being hurt and won the Herington Tourney (beat a pretty good kid whose name I do not remember from Abilene in finals) at 170 and Thyfault from P-Ville has gone to 182.

Riley Soward is from Halstead...and from what I've heard, Thibault from Halstead will not be returning this year. However, I do not know this for certain...just the word from Halstead folks.

Lowell should be above Crow. Wittmer won't place at state. Sorry Great young man. But, he won't place.
Look out for that Smith Center kid. He's a freshman and he is tough and wrestles with alot of heart. He'd be in my top 6.

Re: 321 rankings? - 01/17/12 02:09 AM

Lots of good wrestlers but my money is still on Kyle. I watched that boy wrestle 112 all last season and only tipping the scales at about 105 on full feed. He made it to Hays with some skills and a lot of heart and was one match away from medaling. I am confident Kyle and some of his other teammates that came up just short make it on the stand this year. I was sure Kohler was going to be in the finals but doggone injuries! Hang in there, you'll get it next year Dakota. Go Panthers! Go Longhorns!

Kyle Wittmer went 0-2 at state last year.

Re: 321 rankings? - 01/17/12 07:47 PM

Albers beat Snyder in a dual last week at 152, but then that weekend at the JR Durham in Norton he wrestled 160. I don't know if he bumped down just to wrestle Snyder in the dual, but thats what it seems since he was 160 two days later.

No sources, just what I saw.

Jake Elbrader - Glad to see that he is doing so well this year. He is a great young man and a solid wrestler. He and my son have a long history in the Kids' Federation, going back to my son's very first novice tournament eleven years ago (probably Jake's too).

Keep up the good work Jake. You have worked very hard to get where you are.

Cody Calhoon of 3A Maur Hill (co-op with Atchison HS) is currently 24 wins and 3 losses thus far on the year with 19 pinfalls. He is in the 132 lbs. weight class.

Thanks for the information. Calhoon is going to have a hard time cracking the rankings with the quality wrestlers in his weight. In 321A 132 is probably the deepest weight with 7 returning state placers and several other state qualifiers returning as well.

Has Calhoon had any wins over quality opponents? After a quick look of the tournaments Atchison has attended I couldn't find anything that jumped out at me. You also might want to check the number of losses as his record after the Paola Tournament showed 6 losses. I'll keep an eye out for him, but at this point I don't have criteria to put him in the rankings.

No, he hasn't taken over for Coach Brown. If you check the 3A rankings, Coach Brown has the 1/31 update. I think it's a great testament to both men, that on each of their top 4 they almost always agree on at least 3 wrestlers (often slightly different order). That's very good when the slightest things can affect a wrestler on any given day.

I was going to argue with both for leaving off a certain wrestler at 170, but then I checked last weekend's results and understand why they did. As always, there are quite a number of wrestlers out there who are just off the lists, that will make some noise come regionals/state. Kudos to both for all their time and efforts!

Re: 321 rankings? - 02/01/12 10:57 PM

Calhoon record is correct as stated. They did have him down as 4 losses after Paola, not 3 which he actually has--but that was incorrect as he had a 5 match limit and loss of coin flip determined one match. This however should NOT go down as an individual match lost against his record (unless I am mistaken) as a match was not actually wrestled.

As far as his opponents. He has lost 2 close ones against very quality 4A opponents who are in top 4 ranked in that class. --one being an 8 to 5 loss to Andrew Morgan of Baldwin and also a 7 to 3 decision to Joe Wolfe of Tonganoxie.

..really wish that he had chance to go up against more 3A opponents as the only 3A opponent he wrestled he pinned so you are right in that he hasnt had the chance to truly see where he measures up against 3A.
~ Among his favorable wins within last year are pinfalls over Garrett Matthews of Royal Valley and Kyle Wilson of Wamego. At HS Kids State this past year he dropped matches to current 4A top ranked Aaron Engles of Andale 9 to 6 and current 5A ranked Anthony Monares of Newton 13 to 6.

Unfortunately, he co-ops with 4A classification-Atchison HS and wrestles their schedule. Just putting his name out for consideration, as it is the next few weeks wrestled on the mat that is going to matter the most. Thanks Eureka wrestler15.

No problem. I just can't justify putting him into the rankings at this point. But we'll let the matches at Hays decide the final rankings.

No, I've not taken over for Coach Brown. I just enjoy doing the rankings in my free time in college. I'm a communications major so this is an easy way to bump up my portfolio of work. Coach Brown and I do tend to disagree here and there. But some of those variances are because with his teaching, coaching, and family duties he doesn't have the most time. When I see a glaring difference I generally try to alert him.

Re: 321 rankings? - 02/01/12 11:33 PM

I've updated my rankings because I missed some previous state bracket results involving the 220 lb. weight class. Austin Veach of Doniphan West had criteria over several wrestlers in my rankings and I had overlooked last year's results.

1. Riley Oharah-Goodland-12
2. Tanner Taylor-Burlington-12
3. Austin Veach-Doniphan West-12
4. Cody Batt-Hosington-12
5. Jaishawn Bahia-Republic County-12

Yes I do realize that, but I was merely saying that with that big of a differnce in rankings between All class and 321A, is not generally seen. I do realize that they may differ some with different rankers. I also appreciate the individuals who do rank these athletes, as it gives me something to do while I am supposed to be working. :):)

Impressive, but that is a dual which is not the same as a state tournament. Either way the team race will be interesting in Hays this year.

Goodland was also open at 120 Avelar, and 220 Oharah, I do beleive those two weights would have had different results, which would have changed the outcome of the team score.

Duals don't always equate to good tournament teams, and the Western Kansas TOC saw a lot of injuries & other issues leaving a lot of opens in teams' lineups.

It's a nice accomplishment to beat those teams, but beating them there doesn't carry the weight it could if everyone was healthy and wrestling.

Now if they can do it again in 2 weeks, they will really have something to be proud of.

Alex you might have a point there! Hard for hoxie to compete with half there line up.

Wow Coach Brown no love for Scott City. Beat Goodland twice in 2 weeks and beat Hoxie at the Scott City tourney. Luke Hayes beats Clay Wilcox head to head at Garden City tournament in the finals and is still ranked second. I don't understand.

It has been changed in my rankings. I hadn't seen the DVL Tournament results posted.

Should be fun to watch 126 at the Council Grove Regional with Melcher, Speer , and Wagner all in the running.
