Re: 321A Rankings! - 10/30/12 07:47 PM

Here are the initial 321A Rankings. They are based largely off of last year's state tournament results. I have not moved any wrestlers into different weight classes because I have no confirmed weight projections, so these rankings will change quite a bit once the season starts.

I've also tried to remove any wrestlers that I know have moved or transferred to other schools.

Let me know of any mistakes I might have made and I look forward to handling the rankings for 321A this season.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 10/30/12 07:54 PM

The main thing I see is that there are some Goodland kids ranked, and Goodland is 4a this year.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 10/30/12 08:01 PM

Thanks for catching that. I also had a Rock Creek wrestler ranked, so I'll get that corrected.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 10/31/12 03:53 AM

Not a single freshman makes the rankings?
Posted By: ReDPloyd

Re: 321A Rankings! - 10/31/12 09:20 AM

birddog,

From what I can tell Mr. Bechtel is looking for feedback "actionable intelligence" that he can begin to make adjustments to the rankings since they were primarily based on last year's high school State placings. I am sure that there are freshman that will be in these rankings prior to the start of the season as long as someone with knowledge of their wrestling resumes can make a quantifiable case for them being there.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 10/31/12 10:14 PM

Wyatt thanks for taking over this chore. I do understand you are using last years weights and the performance/placings at state but at 145 Taylor Schuets of ACCHS took 6th place and beat Weiss of Russell at state 6-3. Weiss beat Brown of Oberlin 16-6 and neither placed, so did you just overlook Taylor?

Thanks, I just overlooked it while I was searching the brackets for returning state placers. I probably thought that 11 next to his name was a 12.

The rankings on the forum have been corrected but the KWCA pdf will be incorrect. Don't worry, Taylor will be in the official November 20th rankings.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 11/01/12 05:29 AM

I appreciate the effort that you have and will put into the rankings. I think you might have overlooked a wrestler at 170. Derek Bayless, Sr. Caney< placed 3rd last year at state. He wrestled Jason Berkgren twice at the State Tournament. Berkgren won the 1st match 6-5 and Bayless won the second match (to take 3rd place) by a score of 9-5. I have no idea if Bayless will wrestle 170 this year. Thanks again for what you are doing!

Thanks, I did not know all of the ages of the Caney wrestlers because there were no grade levels listed next to their names on the 321A State brackets or the Eureka Regional brackets.

Guy Kinder and Kolton Stalford were the only wrestlers who I could remember a grade level for.

Derek will be moved into the rankings on the forum and the official rankings on November 20th. I had mistakenly listed him as a senior on my rankings last year and never had it pointed out to me, so thank you again for the correction.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 11/06/12 03:42 AM

First of all Wiesner is going 170 and second of all he wrestled Berkgren several times this summer at Southern Plains camp/tournament and tooled on him each time.

Where is Kade Brown in all of this? He's a stud! He was just sick going into state. He should be up there for sure.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 11/06/12 04:08 AM

Rumor has it Johnson is going 170 so might pencil him in somewhere there, also Graham from PR is going to try 126. Another one to look out for is Tony Weber from PR who is going back to 113 two time state qualifier and multi match winner at state in that bracket.

Why would you have to do anything until the first tournament is over?
That will show who is where and what...

Re: 321A Rankings! - 11/21/12 12:51 PM

Your comment would be a lot more productive if you provided some information to help clarify your position. The rankings are just best guess at this moment and will change through out the year as these fine young athletes go to battle at the tournaments around the state.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 11/21/12 01:06 PM

Jonathan I agree this is just kind of an educated guess at this moment in the season.

Hey KsCoach it would be interesting to see what your thoughts are on the rankings, as this may help future rankings in 321a or even the all class.

I would not want to do these rankings this early in the season.

It's all about creating interest, building anticipation and promoting our sport! I applaud Wyatt for stepping up to rank the 321A class. I have over 100 coaches giving me input on weights and am glad to help him get up to speed.

Pre-season rankings provide us with insight on the upcoming season!

I'm on board. The pre-season ranking is good. All I was saying is that after the 1st one why does it need to be updated until the season starts? As we all know some will not settle on weight until the end of Dec. Any one who is not happy /w the rankings is free to post their own as it is only 1 mans opinion anyway.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 11/22/12 04:25 PM

3A the past couple of years have had 2 rankers and it would be nice to have 3 or 4 or more like the BCS. To make the official posted KWCA roster would be from those points in the different "polls". At the end of the day we would see how good the "pollsters" are. Keepin it light.

The rankings are updated after the official practice date begins. Wrestlers are in the room and weights are verified. Sure there will be changes, but the update gets us that much closer to the correct weights. The one mans opinion is not correct either. The rankings are the result of hundreds of criteria posts, e-mails and calls. If someone is not "happy", they post the criteria they have and if substantive, the rankings are corrected.

Adrian Lange-12-Lyons is currently ranked 7th in my rankings, so he is right there. Not finishing the season last year kept him from climbing into the top 6. However, his performance last year at Kid's State did make a strong impression on me, just not enough to warrant a ranking.

If Alex Cavanaugh isn't under-rated, 113 is one tough weight!!!!!!

It is one of the better weights in 321A with four returning state placers who are at the top of this weight. I gave the edge to Ethan Ross at #5 over Cavanaugh for his tournament performances winning Hoxie and taking 2nd at Clay Center, but it was very close. Its too bad Silver Lake isn't going out to Norton's tournament the 1st week of January like they did last season so we could settle the #5 spot.

Looking forward Cavanaugh will get a chance for a rematch with #2 ranked Brady Lowell and a match-up with #3 ranked Josh Goepfert at the Beloit Tournament in mid-January. The week before #4 ranked John Solko and Cavanaugh could meet at St. Marys. Trey Franka will also pay a visit to Silver Lake at the beginning of February for their tournament.

Cavanaugh will get his chances to show if he belongs higher in the rankings. It should be an interesting season at 113.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 12/12/12 01:15 AM

I just noticed that Nick Wuthnow is at 170 now. He was at 182 earlier this year. It is refreshing to see a kid running TO the competition of Jarid Johnson and Gavin Grater. That will be an interesting weight class with those three at state.

No offense to the 182 lb kids, but Johnson and Grater are obviously two of Kansas' well known studs.

Whoever wins 170 will have earned it.

This is definitely one of the premier weights in 321A with five returning state placers and the top three finishing last season as runner-ups.

Derek Bayless and Jason Berkgren will also have a say in who wins the title at this weight as they split matches in route to 3rd and 4th place finishes respectively at 170 last year.

Should be an entertaining state tournament when the end of February rolls around.

Those results are incorrect from what I can tell. If you add up the team scores from that specific dual it would have Ochs winning by fall.

Also, Ochs won the Outstanding Upperweight Wrestler in his pool. I'm going to guess they wouldn't give that award to a wrestler who was pinned in the 1st period.

If I read your post correctly Wyatt you ranked Ross ahead of Cavanaugh at 113 because he won two tournaments (Hoxie and CC)From what I see he did not win at CC. Cavanaugh on the other hand has won two tournaments and is undefeated!

Yes, I was wrong on Ross winning at Clay Center. I entered it in my rankings spreadsheet wrong and didn't bother to look at the tournament results to double check. However, Ross lost 3-0 against #3 ranked Josh Goepfert-12-Marysville, so that isn't a loss that should hurt him.

Cavanaugh took 2nd at Onaga this past weekend and had a 7-4 loss to #2 ranked Brady Lowell-12-Republic Co., also another "good loss".

Cavanaugh has quality wins that I know of over state qualifiers Tony Weber-11- Pleasant Ridge and Sheldon Harris-11-Wathena.

Ross has wins over state qualifier Troy Juenemann-10-Oberlin and MaCoy Rains-9-Oakley, who finished 3rd at Kid's State 14&Under 105 in 2012.

At the end of the day I view them as even at this point in terms of quality wins and losses. Ross gets the edge because he is an upperclassmen and he finished 5th in the Kid's State 106 High School Division last season. Finishing 6th at Kid's State 14&Under 100 in 2012 hurt Cavanaugh in my criteria as I view him and MaCoy Rains-9-Oakley on nearly equal footing. Rains is ranked 7th in my rankings, so that helped Ross in terms of quality wins. I also realize Cavanaugh did not get to wrestle all of his matches at Kid's State, but I still feel comfortable with the way I have this weight ranked for the time being. Cavanaugh will have his chances to improve in the rankings as he has difficult schedule ahead of him.

I hope that helps explain my reasoning, and I'm sorry I put in the wrong result for Ross at Clay Center.

126
1. Brandon Ball-11-Hoisington
2. Alec Hager-11-Norton
3. James Jurgens-10-Scott City
4. Daniel Melcher-12-Herington
5. Clint Rogers-11-Smith Center
6. Trevor Axelson-12-Plainville

There's not much criteria to work with but after Willy Dieckmann's weekend @ Eudora beating #4 5a and #4 6a I see him cracking this list.

Dieckmann really threw a wrench in the rankings at this weight which were already a bit of a mess.

Dieckmann had that great performance beating two ranked wrestlers from 6A and 5A, but he also lost to two ranked wrestlers from 4A at Eudora, too. Ultimately, not qualifying to state and losing to my #7 wrestler, Blake Graham-11-Pleasant Ridge, in the blood round at regionals last season kept Dieckmann at #8. All of the wrestlers ahead of Graham and Dieckmann have state medals, so they have proven success at Hays.

Not having the full George Worley/Larry Tilton Memorial Duals' results I don't know if Graham and Dieckmann met in the first week. If someone could supply the full results I would really appreciate it. When I get some results from that tournament I'll have a better idea if I can move Dieckmann up.

I also have Jacob Gentry-11-Rossville at #9. He finished 6th at Eudora and has a win over Mark Reiss of Rock Creek at Mission Valley. Then Reiss, who is now in 4A and is a returning state placer from 120 in 321A, just beat #2 Alec Hager-11-Norton at Clay Center, but Hager has wins over #3 James Jurgens-10-Scott City and #6 Trevor Axelson-12-Plainville.

Another problem is I don't know if #4 Daniel Melcher-12-Herington is at 126 this season as I have no results with him in them. He could have wrestled at Wamego, but the results for that tournament are not complete.

I need more results before I can move Dieckmann, or any other wrestlers around at this weight. What I will say is that from #2 to #10 it is very wide open at 126, but for now I will go with wrestlers who have a history of qualifying and then performing well at the state tournament.

Thanks for the update. I'll see what the results look like for this week and I should be able to find a spot for Dieckmann in the next rankings.

So is Juenemann close to being ranked either or is it just a "good win" because he was a state qualifier?

Juenemann is sitting at 9th in my rankings behind MaCoy Rains-9-Oakley and Tony Weber-11-Pleasant Ridge, so he is right there in contention for a medal in my opinion.

Here is a little something to go on where Dieckman of ACCHS is concerned. Granted it is not exactly head to head but
Dieckman ACCHS beat Henes Aquinas at Eudora
Henes Aquinas beat Jacob Gentry of Rossville at Eudora.
Jacob Gentry beat Reiss of Rock Creek at Mission valley.
Reiss of Rock Creek beat Alec Hager of Norton 8-4 at Clay center.
Hager is ranked #2. looks
like Chief Renegade has it right!

Yes, all valid points that I brought up earlier, but when you look at the entire picture it gets a little fuzzy.

Reiss was the regional champion in the same regional bracket last season that Dieckmann failed to qualify to state out of and Reiss went on to place 6th at state.

Hager placed 4th last year at state at 126. Dieckmann sat at home or in the stands while the state tournament was going on.

As for Gentry's win over Reiss at Mission Valley, when you look at the results it shows a fall in 39 seconds. I'm guessing that Reiss was thrown in a headlock, which in some cases can be seen as getting caught depending on the circumstances. I'm going to view it as such due to the track record that both wrestlers have had in the past few seasons.

I think that if anything the above statement shows Reiss deserves to be ranked in 4A. I'd say he should be the 4th ranked wrestler over Miller of Buhler, who beat Dieckmann at Eudora and did not place in 4A last season. However, I do not handle the 4A rankings or the All-Class Rankings so I'll leave those decisions to Eric Johnson.

My philosophy for rankings are equal parts what have you done for me (i.e. at the State Tournament and on the National level) and what have you done for me lately.

Lately, Dieckmann has wrestled very well, but I can't overlook the past entirely. He will most likely be in the rankings, I just can't put him as high as #2 for now.

Jake pinned him with a half nelson & a leg turk. Jake Gentry is for real. His wrestling will speak for itself. Just for the record he did not get caught he just simply ran a half & stuck him.

Good to know. It looks like he was halfing & turking his way to a lot of quick pins at Mission Valley. I've got Gentry at 8th right now, but he could move up depending on the results of the Kaw Valley Duals on Friday. Gentry and Daniel Melcher of Herington should have met there if Melcher is wrestling at 126.

I think the Sabetha boys at 182 and 195 should get some kudo's for their victories over highly ranked 4A foes last Saturday...They were tough matches against very good competition.

Yes, there will be some changes between the #1-4 spots in the rankings. I'll have to see how the other wrestlers in this weight competed this past weekend as well.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 01/15/13 08:11 PM

The 321A Rankings are updated, but I have not sent them off because I need some help on some results from this weekend.

At 113, is John Solko of Rawlins Co. staying at this weight or has he moved up to 126 for the rest of the season? He wrestled at 113 last week for the Norton Tournament and then bumped up to 126 for St. Marys, so I don't know where he is at for the remainder of the season.

At 182, who did Levi Huneke of Sabetha lose to and what was the score? What was the score of the Nick Meck-Shawnee Heights versus Clay Cosand-Mankato match?

At 195, who did Tyler Edelman of Sabetha lose to and what was the score? What was the score of the Ben Taliaferro-Shawnee Heights versus Tristan Speer-Doniphan West match?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 01/16/13 01:30 AM

Be more specific...if you are serious...

However, I would bet he would be higher ranked in 4A than he would in 3A....

I have Taliaferro ranked #3 in Class 5A behind state champions Dillon Archer and Preston Weigel. You think he is under ranked?

Ok, so you are talking about Shane Winters.

What is his record for the season and does he have any notable wins?

These are the tournament finishes for Winters so far, Russell 1st, Ellsworth 1st, Hesston 2nd, and Flint Hills 2nd. He has two losses to Biddle of Central-Burden and no notable wins that I could find.

Just looking at the information I can find Winters would be the #9 wrestler at 138. He is behind four returning state placers, two returning state qualifiers, and two sophomores who have wins over ranked wrestlers. If he has a resume that stacks up to any of the wrestlers ahead of him then I will move him up. Don't get me wrong he has performed well at all of the tournaments he has participated in, I just don' have enough criteria at this point to justify a ranking.

That sounds about right to me. Weigel and Archer are two pretty good wrestlers to be ranked behind.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 01/16/13 02:44 AM

I wasn't complaining about his ranking. I was wondering where he would be if he was ranked...In 3-2-1A or 4A? His record is 16-2 with both losses by Biddle. Thank you for your information!
Posted By: RightCall

Re: 321A Rankings! - 01/16/13 01:26 PM

I'm pretty sure if he was to be ranked it would be in 321A.. and by the way I've heard about your kid Winters, and from the sound of it he's good but hasn't seen any quality competition, and when he has he's been pinned twice, by the same kid (Biddle, who is great competition) and it was worse the second time they met..If the Nickerson/Sterling schedule doesn't change in the near future your boy will always be behind. I've seen plenty of kids go into regional and state with a 31-5 record and lose to guy with 15-16 record...competition is everything, and every time I've questioned Wyatt's ability to rank he gets it right!

Re: 321A Rankings! - 01/16/13 05:50 PM

I am not questioning anybodies ability. You guys have done this way longer than I have. I was just asking a simple question. I agree with what you said though. Anybody can get beat at anytime that's why they get on the mat.

Again, I'm not complaining at all. I'm just trying to understand how the system works. Thanks to those that keep it organized. When I started this conversation, I left out names and records because I wasn't wanting to get into all of that. I just wanted to understand how the system works.

For now I'm ranking it that way because Rains beat Riley Juenemann of Phillipsburg, who was ranked 5th last week, at the Hays Tournament when he bumped to 120. Casey Keller of St. Francis beat Rains in a dual earlier this season at 120 and is a returning state qualifier so that is why I have 5th and 6th ranked like I do. We'll know more after the Western Kansas Tournament of Champions this upcoming weekend.

Hmm..I'm guessing Juennemann is going to be ranked now..but I'm not sure if he should be ranked over Ross..if you watch on open spaces Ross is dominating with take downs but a big mistake by Ross and good timing by Juennemann gave him the fall..so I don't think that makes him a better wrestler..

Yes, Ross pinned himself in his own cradle. It happens. Juennemann is a quality wrestler and they will probably meet again at regionals for the rubber match. The only other time those two met was at Hoxie in the finals. Ross won a 7-5 barnburner.

Ranking aren't that important anyway but seeding at the Norton Regional will be.

How about the Pheifer kid from Hill City winning 120 this last weekend. Unranked, beat Addington from Norton, Keller from St. Francis, then Migchelbrink from Rawlins Co. in the finals. Threw in Jergens from Scott City, Rains from Oakley, Freiling from Smith Center, Juenemann from Phillipsburg and Houser from Plainville - that is a State type bracket at the Norton Regional. WOW! Every one of those wrestlers have 20 wins.

It's matches like this that make doing rankings even more difficult. A win is a win and Juenemann is deserving of a ranking.

I've almost decided to just throw a darts at a bracket to determine who will make it out of the Norton Regional in this bracket. Who ever is having the best weekend on February 15th and 16th will be going to Hays, which is kind of a shame because I have those wrestlers ranked from #3 to #11 in my spread sheet. Only four will go to State, but they should all have a shot at winning a championship.

Lively of Norton beat Desair of Plainville this past weekend at 145. The pin time is incorrect. It happened late in the 3rd after Lively was winning the match. I am sure they have matched up previously and I do not know those results, but I do know the fall times are wrong most the time in the brackets for the WKTOC.

Thanks for catching that. I was looking at the brackets while the Western Kansas TOC was still going on and it may have been entered incorrectly on TrackWrestling at the time. That happened on some brackets I was following at Fredonia this weekend, too.

I guess Coach Johnson didn't catch it either when I sent the rankings to him. I'll get it updated.

Lively's match was originally entered incorrectly. The error was caught and corrected towards the end of the tournament.

Good to know I wasn't seeing things when I looked at the brackets during the finals on Saturday. I guess I'll just have to go back to the results a day or two later to make sure they were entered correctly. wink

Looks like Justin Wagner from ACCHS is healthy and back. took second last week at JC and was a state placer at 126 last year. Could be a force in this bracket if he stays healthy.

Why isn't Luke Plummer ranked in 182lbs? That's just plain stupid!! U beat no.3 in 6a and u fall out of the rankings?

Re: 321A Rankings! - 01/31/13 01:49 AM

Kyler atwood- 3rd in 2012
Gavin Grater- 2nd in 4a in 2012
Zach Geinger- SQ and has beaten Yergey-Dible and Malin
Clay Cosand- SQ
Andrew Malin- Beat Yergey- Dible
Steve Yergey-Dible- 4th in 2012

thats a tough list to get on.

The reason Plummer has fallen out of the rankings is largely because of this group of wrestlers:
3. Zach Gienger-12-St. Francis
4. Clay Cosand-12-Mankato
5. Andrew Malin-12-Plainville

They all have wins over returning state placers in 321A, they all have wins over other ranked wrestlers, and all of them are previous state qualifiers. Plummer is also a state qualifier with wins over ranked wrestlers in other classes, but he doesn't have a win over a returning state placer, which is the difference that I have between him and that group.

Then right in front of Plummer you have the two returning state placers that they have their wins against:
6. Steve Yergey-Dible-12-Hoxie
7. Levi Huneke-12-Sabetha

Just like Plummer all of these wrestlers have only lost to quality opponents who are or have been ranked this season in 321A or the other classes, or in Gienger's case he has a loss to the #3 ranked wrestler in Colorado.

Plummer is currently sitting at 8th in the rankings, but I could definitely see him placing 3rd in this bracket, maybe 2nd if Grater and Atwood end up on the same side. However, because he was not able to finish the Newton Tournament or participate in the State Tournament last season I really don't have the criteria to move him above any of those wrestlers. I also don't know of any common opponents that Plummer and that group may have wrestled this season.

I hope this explains why I have the rankings like I do.

Re: 321A Rankings! - 01/31/13 07:56 PM

Got it, I just think he is better than 8th. I saw him give the 182lbs state champ Ty Lowe all he wanted several times last year. And lowe was pretty much unstopable last year. Losing only to 195 champion.

I watched many of those matches between Tyler Lowe and Luke Plummer last season. From my perspective it was more Plummer's style, keeping matches close by defending his hips and not opening up, that kept those matches close. I was only able to catch bits pieces of his matches at the Eureka Tournament this year. However, I will be at TVL Duals and the Fredonia Regional so I'll be sure to watch his matches while he is wrestling at those remaining tournaments before State.

There are plenty of ways to skin a cat or wrestle, but those matches last season with Tyler Lowe did not stand out to me as performances that warrant a ranking over the seven wrestlers currently ahead of Plummer at this time.

Yes, Chris Deters of Marysville has really been wrestling well these past few weeks and was victorious in a difficult weight class. Should be an interesting State bracket.

Here are the updated 321A Rankings for this week.

The official rankings are incorrect at the top of 120 but I'm working on having them updated. It should be as follows:
1. Logan Bowen-10-ACCHS
2. Haegan Schaefer-10-Silver Lake

Bowen has a win over Pratt of Baldwin who beat Schaefer this past weekend at Silver Lake.

Ah, so if Ross really deserves a ranking, he will have to show it at regionals!

I had to go back and look but on page two of this topic, the ranking looked like this:

145
1. Tagen Lambotte-11-Rossville
2. Chance Demel-12-Hoisington
3. Triston Hurla-11-St. Marys
4. Nick Sells-12-Russell
5. Nic Johnson-11-Sedgwick
6. Eli Bozarth-12-Norton

So I'm guessing since Bozarth got hurt again this year, Ellis moved down a weight. If you look at the Hoxie results on 12/1, Bozarth won the 145 lb and Ellis was second at 152.

They have 3 ranked in the top six. If they only place those three, 10th place is about right. Are there any of their wrestlers that have criteria to be ranked higher?

Plainville has six wrestlers ranked in the top six, Norton has five wrestlers ranked, Hoxie has four wrestlers ranked, and Phillipsburg has three wrestlers ranked.

Team tournament placements and dual results do not have any influence on individual rankings, which is where the team rankings are derived from.

Fredonia= 15.5% of the ranked wrestlers, 3 #1 ranked wrestlers.

Should be a fun weekend! Looking forward to the 113 bracket at Onega should be a fun one! Also interested in the 120 bracket at Norton it's BRUTAL!

Any upset predictions for this weekend?

I was referring to team rankings not individual rankings. Shouldn't matter if one team has more individual wrestlers ranked when it comes to team rankings.

In the dual P-ville was missing the 152, the 145 was the second team kid, and the 4th ranked 182 was out. In both of the tournaments the #1 ranked 195 was missing. I don't know if P-burg was also missing kids at these events, but P-ville was. The only tourney P-ville was at full strength was Beloit. They won it.

The rankings reflect what the State Tournament could look like, so yes individual rankings matter when it comes to the team rankings.

I would guess the MCL teams come back with a vengeance this year at State...after the poor showing last year. Last year only one MCL team placed in the top 10...and that was Smith Center a #6. There will be 3 MCL teams in the top 10 this year and maybe 2 MCL teams in the top 3.

Here are the Final 321A Rankings for this season.

Just as a note they are based off of my previous rankings and are not a reflection of how the brackets at State turned out. There are several ranked wrestlers who will not medal because of the way they were drawn into their bracket, but I thought they deserved some recognition for their work this season.

I will release my predictions for the 321A State Tournament on the talk forum later today.

It has been a great year doing the rankings for 321A. Best of luck to all of the wrestlers at State this weekend, and safe travels as well.
