Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/10/13 04:34 AM

Wow Mike you got a lot of questions. I will try to find some of those answers and post them on the facebook page tomorrow. We did the preseed tonight but that is just the starting point, we will finalize them at 8 in the morning on Friday. It is going to be on trackwrestling so it will be moved round by round on there. I will try to get on the facebook site tomorrow night and write a general overview of the meet weight by weight. We got a little busier than I thought we would be today and I didn't get home in time to go it tonight but will tonight and tomorrow. I will check on 810 and post that info on there also. It is going to be sensational. There are a ton of good weights and a lot of balance in the meet along with the usual high profile matches. I will write up three or four weights tonight and more tomorrow.

They are not using matside scoring! Bout sheets are being walked to the table...my guess is not enough data entry people.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/12/13 06:51 AM

Lewis and Shoemaker is no slouch. Mies and Leach at 120, Lapaglia and Lambotte at 145 is a match of state champs, Salas and Boerner is a match up between two undefeated 152's who are both Fargo AA's. Armstrong and Puckett at 60 is a good one, State Champ Guillen and defending champ Abkemeire at 170, Eck and Pixley for sure (Pixley was pretty amazing tonight), all of these are marquee matchups of wrestlers who either are or might be state champions. If anyone can find more physical wrestling in this state than what is happening here today, man I don't know where it would be.

People are disappointed in the Collinsville camp, but when you consider they left three state champs on the bench this week with illness and injury, sitting at over 100 points going into day two is a remarkable accomplishment. The crowd has been great, the wrestling as good as it gets, and that is even after an incredible amount of scratches because of flu and injury. What a tourney.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/13/13 03:37 AM

Well, what happened to Levi Eck was Mike Pixley. That kid is tougher than nails. Those Blue Springs kids were on a mission to get maximum points and it didn't matter who was in their way. Pixley is a rough hombre though and he can do that to anyone on a given day.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/13/13 04:07 AM

One thing I thought was pretty amazing, well two really. Topeka Seaman wrestled well from the start of the tourney to the end. Not surprised that they did, I just had not seen them this year and was real impressed with how they wrestled. The second thing I was amazed about was that Collinsville, Oklahoma had three state champions out including the nationally ranked, Davion Jeffries and they still managed to score 154 points and only be twenty points out of first. They have unreal depth of talent on that team. It was a great two days out there and the wrestling was as physical as I have seen any high school tourney in a long long time. There are going to be some pretty sore guys running around in some of these high schools next week. A whole raft of state champions did not win that tourney.

I heard that Pixley was applying a Kolat, a headlock that restricts blood flow through the carotid artery, and the official failed to get in position to notice that Levi was losing consciousness. If so, the match should have been stopped for PD or the interpretation can be that the move was restricting air or blood flow which is illegal. IMO when a wrestler is disabled to the point of losing consciousness it could be an automatic disqualification by today's standards. A wrestler is NOT allowed to continue if he loses consciousness which would mean that an illegal move was involved. This official made this same mistake last year at this tournament. One of the SJA wrestlers went completely limp and the official never got down on a knee to peer in to see that the arm was tight across the neck. This isn't MMA. I believe in tough, aggressive wrestling but this was over the top. This should have been a great match.

Perhaps it was Kolat who taught the move to the infamous Simmons brothers and their "deadly sleeper" choke hold. I was in attendance at the NCAA Tournament in Kansas City when Simmons was penalized 1 point for the "sleeper" hold which cost him the match.

"The unseeded Clendenin beat the nation’s 5th-ranked wrestler, Nick Simmons of Michigan State, who is considered one of the most dominant lightweight men while on top. The first two periods were scoreless with Terrance unable to score from his feet. But while looking to ride out for a 1-0 win on time advantage, the Spartan made a mistake by locking hands while Clendenin tried frantically to escape. Tied 1-1 in overtime, once again neither scored, but Simmons was penalized for an illegal choke hold while attempting to ride out in the tie-breaker—giving Clendenin a 2-1 victory."

I heard that Pixley was applying a Kolat, a headlock that restricts blood flow through the carotid artery, and the official failed to get in position to notice that Levi was losing consee that the arm was tight across the neck. This isn't MMA. I believe in tough, aggressive wrestling but this was over the top. This should have been a great match.

Mr cokely as a student of both mma and wrestling I can assure you the move was legal. I have myself been in Michaels headlock series, if you lay there sure its going to hurt. His headlock creates pressure to the neck more than a choke kids panic and natural reaction is to give up. If you watch the match Pixley has an arm therefore giving room for the opponent to breath. Also the neck is not turned in an illegal manner. Again its very tight and uncomfortable.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/13/13 04:59 PM

That is one thing I have noticed, watching Levi since he was 7 or 8 years old, when the going gets tough and its uncomfortable he does tend to give up.....(yeah right)

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/13/13 05:03 PM

Let me rephrase that. I doubt it was too uncomfortable for him. Chances are the lights were going out, legal or illegal.

Cokeley and others who think it's an illegal move.

First: Pixley has been doing that move all year all over the country and has never been called out on it as an illegal move. The point of the move is to get the opponent on their back and in a uncomfortable position, just like the durlacher. I saw a wrestler this weekend try to tap out when put in a durlacher.

Second: Mike Hagerty is a respected HS coach and DI referee. I don't think he would put his reputation on the line by allowing his wrestlers to perform illegal moves. I don't think any of us is more qualified then him to decide if it's illegal or not.

I can see a ref calling a PD because it looks uncomfortable then they might want to err on the side being caution but no way is it illegal.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/13/13 05:52 PM

I'm not going to speak to the legality of the move here. What I am going to speak to is Jax's assertion that Levi quit. I have the video, and the pressure being applied to the coratid artery/throat area caused Levi to be OUT. If you are saying otherwise you are either blind, or a complete idiot.

Levi would have been wise to not get in that position, but live and learn. The head inside single attack that got him the first takedown, would have been a wiser strategy to stick with.

I believe pressure to the same area in the 152 finals match caused the Colorado kid to nearly lose consciousness, but applied from a different position. Behind the kid instead of in front.

I have seen plenty of kids go out from tight head and arm, neck whip/wrenches, etc. I don't believe most of those instances were caused by purposeful application of pressure to the carotid artery area.

I believe that putting kids in positions that cause them to CHOOSE to go to their back, or give up a takedown, or give up the reversal is a part of this great, brutal, sport. Those that know me will vouch for that. However, NEVER in our practice room has anyone, even as a "hey look at this" type of situation, talked about technique that causes our opponent to lose consciousness. We prefer to defeat, or be defeated, while we and our opponent are both fully conscious.

I'm not going to badmouth any officials either. Should they be on the mat, looking into that area to make sure that type of pressure isn't being applied? Probably. But he shouldn't have to.

Watching the video several time, I counted to 7 or 8 when the pressure started, and it was pretty obvious what was happening a count or two before Levi went mostly limp, then to his back. Sorry, but a front quarter doesn't work anymore on a good kid, so with a hand in a choice place, aka Kolat, the baddest toughest meanest dude in the world is going out and going over. Last week, I saw a takedown that took the kid to his back, that was brought back to neutral, no points awarded, because the kid hollered, or something, to catch the 2nd ref's eye, and he stepped in and froze the action. The kid had been accidentally poked in the eye. They went back on their feet. The problem with this technique is that you can't signal to anyone that you are going out. You don't even know it until it happens. My opinion is that it should have been obvious to the ref that a defenseless wrestler was going to his back, and it should have been stopped.

Again, I like to see wrestling matches between two conscious kids....

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/13/13 05:57 PM

Again, I'm not talking legal or illegal, but there is a difference between uncomfortable and unconscious.

At Midlands this year in the 157lbs semi final Isaac Jordan, who hits a Kolat in almost every match, had the move locked up on Jason Welch and the ref got down to see if the arm was across the throat. When he realized it was the ref PD'd the position a and told Jordan to stay off the throat or he will be penalized. So yes actually it can be called for an illegal move.

Another example, a Kansas ref at the KC Stampede PD'd the same move being hit by the Park Hill 170 pounder because he was on the throat.

You're correct Cokely, our 170# has adopted that move as well and he has had much success with it. All I'm saying is a PD maybe warranted but illegal call or disqualifiaction wouldn't be the right call.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/13/13 07:07 PM

I agree it should't be called for an illegal move. IMO if you do get caught in it then you are relaxing way to much from bottom or a front headlock, I have learned that the hard way. As far as the DQ goes, I believe my dad was saying that if the wrestler goes unconscious then maybe they should be removed from the match, much like getting knocked out after hitting your head to hard. A lot of times now a days the trainer won't let a wrestler continue after getting knocked out.

Good luck to KeShawn the rest of this year. I enjoy following him and the rest of the Park Hill team.

I agree that was uncalled for, however Pixley did not apply that move. Hays witnessed first-hand Coleman went out last year with the move in the video.

It is simple, place your thumb, wristbone or fingers across the carotid artery and in seconds your opponent will be out. The move may look legal but the restriction of oxygen to the brain is illegal, simple. If you render your opponent unconscious there should be a penalty for it.

To say, "Learn to defend" in HS wrestling in this case is a little crazy.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/13/13 09:03 PM

The conscious kid either:1- was unfamiliar with how to finish a front headlock and was squeezing because he didn't know what else to do or 2-squeezing as hard as he could trying to inflict punishment/cutoff blood or air. Should have been stopped when he made zero effort to improve his position.

Was it proven that Hagerty was involved in the MMA fights? That's a pretty bold statement to make Hurla. You've stepped over the line by making that post. What happened with the lawsuit? Hagerty was cleared of the accusation that you just made. So next time you want to post something and provide an article, provide a post article too.

A similar incident happened to my son 2 years ago, he was caught in a front headlock and was unconscious in less than 10 seconds, and woke up in the hospital with no clue why. The ref should always pay close attention and try to be in good position whenever there is a hold applied to the neck area.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/13/13 10:49 PM

I wasn't at the bobcat, and I didn't have a dog in this fight. But after I watched this video, It defantly looks like a choke to me. With the front headlock, then turning the corner to put pressure on the neck down and away, cuts off the air, and the match should have probably been stopped for PD before the bottom wrestler even went to it back. The rule book clearly states you can not put pressure or twist the neck or throat.

Section 7
#2 Illegal holds/maneuvers include, but are not limited to:
k. holds/manueuvers putting pressure in the throat and/or carotid artery;
q. front quarter nelson w/ the chin;
y. any hold/maneuver used for punishment;
z. any hold/maneuver with pressure exhorted over the opponent's mouth, nose, throat or next that restricts breathing or circulation;

6. The headlock with an arm encircled at or above the elbow is a legal but potentially dangerous hold/maneuver. Because of the dangers present when this hold/maneuvers used, referees are cautioned to be in a position to observe the hold/maneuver carefully. There are occasions when the arm, which is included, is impaired. It is possible for the arm to be inadvertently moved into a position where it restricts breathing or circulation and is hidden from the referee's view. The face of the defensives wrestler may be forced to tightly into the chest or side of the offensive wrestler and his breathing constricted. The head and shoulder of the defensive wrestler in a legal headlock may be forced together to the extent the shoulder becomes a pressure point on the jugular vein or carotid artery, thus presenting a very dangerous situation that may or may not be obvious to the referee. Finally, the strength of the wrestler applying the headlock may result in twisting, constricting or comp active damage to the neck and present serious problems. The very nature of the legal headlock prevents the defensive wrestler from indicating pain or distress when his opponent is of equal or superior strength. Because there may be no visible signs of distress until the problem becomes so serious the defensive wrestler may have lost consciousness, referees are cautioned to be very alert during this situation so they can prevent a potentially dangerous situation from becoming illegal.

As you know, in these situations, the official needs to be aware of the danger, be in position to see it, and be ready to stop it at the first sign of distress or if its not being used to advance a position. Since all headlocks are potentially dangerous by definition, and since this tournament is full of skilled, strong, young men, the officials need to be underneath, looking at the lock, and making sure it isn't held so long as to result in even a chance of injury. Since it appears the wrestler in this video passed out from lack of blood, the hold was not stopped soon enough. Now, he could have had the flu or been sick.

Officials need to stop these holds. And coaches and fans need to applaud that call and not complain.

I have been regularly, routinely, and loudly chastised by coaches for following this rule and interpretation. Front headlocks are dangerous, if they aren't used within seconds to advance the move they should be stopped. I predict they'll be outlawed eventually, because they pose too great a threat of injury and are not a particularly skilled move. If they banned the figure-four to the head, why not the front headlock? Same pressure, same danger.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/14/13 01:22 AM

The purpose of the move is very clear, it is designed to take advantage of a hole in the rules (it is legal by what Will posted) and choke a person out. If you can get away with it before the ref can see it is "intentionally" dangerous, I guess in today's 'it all about winning, regardless of how' society, that is all that matters. But, wouldn't this of been a much more interesting match to see these 2 great wrestlers go at it without some cheap move... Michael is way too good to rely on this move. And, after watching this, I do not understand how you Missourians can look down on the head and arm!!!

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/14/13 12:34 PM

In 30 years + I have never seen "the choke" called correctly. Follow this complicated logic.

1. Choking is illegal.
2. If a wrestler is unconscience he has been choked.

He should earn 1 point for an illegal hold. (a potentially dangerous hold can always become illegal if it is not stopped), He can't continue because he was put to sleep. Therefore he wins the match.

Kolat
Shows this move on his website as a take down, where he release the move and spin around his opponents. He also has a disclaimer on how you can choke a guy out. He then show it as a pinning move, if your opponent attempts to tripod out of it. This is shown a lot like the 3/4 nelson we all know, but with a lot more pressure on the top of the neck not the throat.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/14/13 04:24 PM

My only loss my senior year was because I got put in a similar front headlock, lost consciousness, got pinned, and then started convulsing on the mat and woke up a couple minutes later. I love front headlocks and teach them in our room religiously, but that particular front headlock is done with the intention of causing a loss of consiousness. The correct call is 1 penalty point for illegally restricting airflow. The passed out wrestler would not be allowed to continue because he lost consciousness and would therefore win the match.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/14/13 05:31 PM

I would prefer that the ref stop it, so we can continue the match. I know it isn't what you're saying, but noone wants to win a match that way. THey want to wrestle. And they can't wrestle if they ain't conscious........

The only way a ref can really see what is going on is to get down not only on all fours, but with his face near the mat, lookin UP into the throat/neck area. It is very easy to hide if a ref isn't looking for it.

In a match with two refs, it should be much easier to police....

And the front headlock is a very potent weapon, without this type of pressure on the carotid artery or throat. We drill it EVERY night at practice. Head in the hole and butt drag. Plenty of other ways to score also, WITHOUT putting your opponent under.......

Was not there. Just watched the video.

Were the officials in position? did they change levels to see underneath? I think knuckles and Father Time missed this one.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/14/13 06:32 PM

The Andale coach was out of his seat yelling "that's a choke" emphatically and only a couple feet away from the ref, but the ref allowed the action to continue then called a pin seconds later, disregarding coaches shouts, I wonder how ref felt after seeing Eck dazed and obviously not coherent of what had happened to him.. I too would have liked to see that match minus the choke Eck went right after him and took him down pretty handily!!

I agree...no one want to win that way. But if the refs would make the correct call it might stop people from pulling this kind of BS in the future. Any good wrestler knows when he is restricting blood/air flow. This was done intentionally as a cheap way to beat a good kid. The offending wrestler should have lost the match, and the official is responsible for knowing the rule.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/14/13 07:44 PM

So am I looking at some kind of version of a 3/4 nelson? That move is designed to create extra torque on the the top of the head and back of the neck and not across the throat like this move demonstartes.

The move in question is so obviously a choke hold, I am surprised it has even been debated this long.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/14/13 08:40 PM

The point of this discussion, to me, is that the officials are responsible for the well being of the wrestlers. In both clips the official on the whistle did not position himself to see where pressure was being applied. In the Bobcat match the asst. official looked unsure if he even knew a match was being wrestled. The point is if you don't take your job seriously and if you are physically unable to perform the required duties (getting down on the mat and back up in short order) then retire. We need a an overall evaluation system to develop officials and evaluate their abilities. There is no need for me to go on and on but as far as Pixley is concerned, he was trying to win the match, nothing more. It was the OFFICIALS responsibility to recognize the danger and stop it before it became illegal. When Eck blacked out it IMMEDIATELY became an illegal hold, by rule, and the official, no in judgement but by interpretation made bad calls in both of these matches.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/14/13 11:19 PM

I just watched this for the first time. I watched it two more times because I couldn't believe how fast he went from wrestling to being out. Thinking about it now after seeing it, I would be pretty upset that this happened and did not get reviewed by whatever rules committee that could make an educated decision as to whether it was legal or not. I don't have a lot of experience seeing this particular version of the front headlock, but I think that I have witnessed enough matches and enough front headlocks to know that something didn't look right.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/15/13 12:01 AM

If a kid is choked unconscious then he was in a choke hold and a penalty should be called. That is just common sense.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/15/13 01:13 AM

Tough loss for Eck. Not good to see anyone go to sleep like that.
Congrats to Pixley though, that kid is phenomenal and doesn't get enough recognition. He tore it up at Fargo.

I am a Kanas fan of all sports, and was unable to attend the Classic, but i just got done watching the Lambotte, lapaglia match and was totally amazed. one thing for sure, i will always give credit where credit is due, and this is one of the times.
To me, it looked as though Jesus Christ himself came down and put the leg band on in that match. sometimes things open our eyes and put everything into perspective. now is clarity on what it is to be D1 material, and where everyone else really is.

Darick Lapaglia signed a National Letter of Intent to wrestle for Coach Micheal Denney at Maryville University in St Louis.

He joins 2 of his former Blue Springs teammates (Greg Hegarty & Keenan Hagerty) as a Maryville Saint.

Not sure what you mean, but lots of really good wrestlers choose to wrestle DII.

Division I is not a life choice everyone embraces.

I'm sure he knows how good he is and wants to be part of building a first-rate program for a legendary coach.

what i mean is D1 is for D1 quality wrestlers and from my short observation, that is what i Make of him. D2 guys should be wrestling D2 level until they are matured and ready to move up. and yes you are correct, if all D1 wrestlers went and wrestled for a D2 "legendary coach" he will for sure stay legendary.

I don't think you understand. There is more to life than wrestling D1. Some student athletes (regardless of talent) choose to focus on academics and preparing for life after college while wrestling as part of a team. Not to mention that they might want to have some fun along the way. DI is a full-time commitment with little room for anything else. DII is not a stepping stone to DI. Coach Denney has recruited and kept tons of DI quality kids. They stay with him & excel. Over 60 current coaches (from DI to high school/youth) wrestled for him.

Being a DI quality wrestler just gives you more options, but it is still a choice based on many factors other than talent.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/15/13 02:59 AM

i guess you are correct. i dont understand. wrestling has a shelf life on average of 10 years or less after high school. academics and everything else that you commented on can also be done at a D1 college. you dont get your youth back, fun shmun, who cares. so many kids would give anything to be in his his shoes. still think its a waste of talent.

To each his own. We can "agree to disagree".

I don't even know Lapalia, but I do know DII wrestling. I am pretty sure academics take a back seat to wrestling at a lot of DI colleges. To some coaches, you are only as good as your last win.

Ultimately it is up to each wrestler with their family to find the best place for them. I respect that.

Before last april i would have agreed with you about whether to go d1 or d2 if given the choice with talent like lapaglias, now i realize there is more to life than wrestling and agree with lancer lou, sports should be for fun first, second and third, win or lose.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/15/13 03:27 AM

a simple and a nice thing to say to someone who has already made their mind up, but 99.9% of everyone on here that has wrestled, regrets what they could have done if they were blessed early with premonition of how they would feel later in life not taking advantage of opportunities that were right in front of them.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/15/13 10:41 AM

michael has been using that move since he was eight yrs. old. thats a really bold statement to suggest that he was intentionally using his three quarter nelson as a strangulation hold. in the eight years he has been wrestling no one has ever went unconscious from having this hold applied. i suggest you carefully edit your post from here on out before you submit them.you know nothing about my family. yet you have the balls to come on a public wrestling forum and make accusations about a 16 yr. old kid and his parents. who do you think you are? i would be delighted to meet with you at your earliest convenience to discuss this matter on a more in-depth basis. keith pixley 618-781-9646.

It's not on Michael or his coach.

When Eck blacked out it IMMEDIATELY became an illegal hold, by rule, and the official, not in judgement but by interpretation made a bad call that prevented a great match-up between two elite wrestlers.

Darick had varies options when it came to choosing a college. His grades are solid and he has very strong ACT score. DI schools missed out on this kid and with that being said, he choose to attend Maryville. The Maryville coaching staff has embraced and made him an offer that would be very hard for any student athletic and parent to turn down. I look for Darick to perform at the DII level and who knows, maybe later down the road, he'll end up at a DI school.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/15/13 04:32 PM

jhayes makes a great point. Alot of it is the offer you can get and affordability. For any KS kid you are going to pay out of state tuition to wrestle D1. That is 15k a year. Even if the D1 school can offer everything else the same as smaller schools (which they cannot because they have only 9.9 scholarships total) they have higher costs, and in the end a greater amount out of pocket. Many times it boils down to is it worth 60k (4 years of 15k out of state tuition) to a family to wrestle D1. That is what it boiled down to for us.

Bottom line for KS kids is you have to be willing to pay extra to wrestle D1. Not saying what is right or wrong, just saying it's a choice. Darick is going to a great place with a great coach. He will do great, and he will have plenty of chances each week to wrestle D1 kids and show how good he is.

Re: Bobcat Classic - 01/15/13 07:57 PM

Yep, we are going through that with my son and baseball right now. He could go to some big schools like Bo could have, but when I got the estimate for how much the difference was going to be, it is mind boggling. It is easy for people to come on here and tell kids what they should or shouldn't do, but there is nothing in the world wrong with NCAA II, III, or NAIA schools. Some of them are the best education you can possibly get. Presidents have come from them and CEO's of major corporations. I coached at William Jewell for a number of years and the offers that some of our graduates got just to be interns at major corporations was just unreal to an old football coach like me. I say great luck to Lapaglia at Maryville (did I get that right), and I look forward to seeing how he does, just like I look forward to how Bo and Middleton and some of the great kids at Baker do. Power to them.

Another thing, some of you know that I coached for a number of years in local high schools and we had a great many kids go out and scholarship at DI schools. I am ashamed to say that the great majority of them were used and abused by those very schools they gave so much to. Be careful what they all wish for. All that glitters is not gold.
