National Tournament/ Kansas kids Club Question

National Tournament/ Kansas kids Club Question - 02/26/14 02:46 PM

I have not been active in Kids club for many years. If a high school athlete wrestles in a national tournament and misses sub-District is there a way they can still wrestle at districts? I know back in the 90's there was an exemption but I did not know if it was still in place. Anyone know or who to contact to find out?

Thanks

Unfortunately, there is not a way within Kansas anymore. You have to go through the qualifying tournaments and place in order to get on the state bracket.

The District Director could make a decision to eliminate Sub Districts for the HS division. It is an option according to the bylaws as written now.

Wish I would have known about that by-law! We left Colorado early from that tournament to drive back to Ks over night to wrestle to qualify for kids state!! Oh the crazy things we do for our kids!

You are going to have to convince your district director to do it. It is not on a case by case basis. I am talking about having only ONE qualifying tournament for the HS division instead of 2.

Ya don't really see that happening. Most either do the kids club or move on to higher caliber tournaments. So to change the rule for 1 or 2 kids a year would not be a reason to change it to many people. My son just had not tripled crowned yet and was determined to and it was his last chance. But still wanted to be in as many high caliber tournaments as possible.

Travis V - I have been around since the 80's and have served on the State Tournament Committee a good majority of those years. I never remember an "exemption" as you call it.

We did allow Jr. High Wrestlers to walk-on to the District / State Tournament but that was ONLY if their Jr. High Wrestling Programs were still in season and they were an active participant with their school program. We have NOT had that situation for several years now!!

At one point back (1983??) we use to have a Freestyle Tournament on Friday night for the HS Wrestlers and then the Kids State on Saturday/Sunday. The 16 and under division was changed to a HS Division in more recent years and we added the Senior Classic to Friday night at the State Tournament.

The only allowances for "walk-ons" were if they were Jr. High and participating in a SCHOOL sponsored wrestling activity. No other exceptions were allowed. They had to make a choice ...
