Middle School Wrestling in Shawnee Mission Dst.

Middle School Wrestling in Shawnee Mission Dst. - 09/04/14 01:12 AM

Officiated tonight at a middle school dual between two Shawnee Mission middle schools. This is the first year for middle school wrestling in this district. Had a good turn out of parents and students, and some fun matches. Not a lot of kids out--less than twenty on each squad. Seems they are competing with Johnson County football this time of year. But its a positive step for the sport and I hope it thrives.

What the heck are they doing wrestling this time of year? That may be the only season worse than the timing of the Pioneer League down here!

Seems crazy for me to say it but I totally agree with Sport0.

I would be curious to know if this is the traditional age/grades (7th & 8th) we think of in middle school OR if this is one of the newer model middle schools consisting of say 5th and 6 graders. I just cannot believe anyone would schedule any sport up against football!

Is this strictly Intramural Wrestling? I thought the seasons were dictated by KSHSAA. Seems awfully early for wrestling in KS.

The KSHSAA establishes season of sport for high schools only. If middle schools wanted to play football in the spring they could do so. And yes, I agree, this seems really early for wrestling and weird they would be competing directly with football.

What are the total number of kids participating for Shawnee Mission school - 20 per team = about 100 kids - not bad? A couple schools of thought with the season being so early. Maybe kids not getting much playing time in football might just get interested in the sport at this time. It also allows them to jump into the USA Wrestling club season if they like it. I think they can play football and wrestle at the same time - not positive. Wrestling runs into the same problem with kids doing other activities - I can't say the BB words.

Most MS are moving to having wrestling after fb/vb/cc season, with a mid Oct-Nov/Dec schedule, with the bb season following (wish we could get to this point in NW KS). This allows the kids to do both if they wish, or move into USA Wrestling Season. Wrestling in September may not be bad, per se, but it just seems "wierd"and needlessly limiting. My conspiracy theory is it is this early so it DOESN'T conflict with bb.

I am not sure how many practices they have per week.

Season 6 weeks long - great introduction period

Shawnee Mission Middle School

Boys' Wrestling for 7th and 8th grade (August 18-October 4)

WRESTLING SCHEDULE

Who knows - maybe the school district is on to something for the kids that have never been exposed to wrestling. It is definitely worth a try.

Way better than no opportunity.

Congratulations Trailridge Wrestlers! Last night’s dual against Indian Hills was an amazing victory for the Wildcats with an unofficial score of 57-36. An especially loud roar goes out to the following wrestlers who pinned their opponents to the mat: Gabe Arreguin, Noah Goodwin, Evan Wapp, Charles Brockman, Jordan Kryfka, Stephen Dewey, Billy Scarlett, Andrew Reid, and Israel Centeno. We also want to give a pat on the back to Coach Jetton and Coach Tummons for their excellent coaching abilities. If you are interested in joining the wrestling team, it’s not too late. Coach Tummons says he can get you caught up to speed if you’re willing to work hard. Report to the auxiliary gym tonight after school to express your interest in committing to a winning team.

In my opinion this is the worst schedule they could create. We as wrestling fans need to work hand in hand with football and vice versa. Both sports develop some of the same physical skills. From a wrestling point of view, the numbers involved with football serve as a great place to fill wrestling rooms/teams. If your school is having trouble filling a full wrestling squad I suggest the first place you look is the relationship between these two sports. Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but I wonder if in the case above, if the reason for the weird season schedule wasn't to show wrestling as not a viable sport? We already have at least three different middle school wrestling seasons in this state, now we need another one? I would be curious as to anyone's reasoning as to why to not go with a more traditional season for wrestling. It wouldn't possibly be to protect that other winter sport?

They have 100 more kids trying it than they did last year.

And again, my question would be, why this time of the year? My question to those numbers would be, at what cost to the football numbers? Maybe Shawnee Mission is like Wichita and doesn't offer middle school football?

It is true that Shawnee Mission has no middle school football. It's a Johnson County league.

I am sure - positive there are plenty of football opportunities in Johnson County and the State of Kansas.

Re: Middle School Wrestling in Shawnee Mission Dst. - 09/23/14 01:54 PM

Good Grief, Simmer down fella's.
Listen to Smokey Cabin. We have approximately 100 middle school age kids wrestling in the SMSD right now. Most of which are first time wrestlers. If some of these kids didn't have the opportunity to wrestle in middle school they may not even go out in high school. Some of these kids may or may not ever help their high school team, but at least they have been given the opportunity to participate in the worlds greatest sport.
The SMSD has either never had middle school athletics, or have not had them in several years. Last Spring they decided to start them up for the '14-'15 school year. They are starting with wrestling and cross country in the fall,BB in the winter, and volleyball in the spring. They are planning on adding sports as part of the long term plan. As for wresting, currently it is a 7 week season(Aug. 18-Oct. 3). We dual the other four middle schools and have a dual format District Tournament. It is a work in progress and nothing is set in stone. After the season I'm sure the coaches will get together and discuss how things went and suggest changes. I know I have been making a list. As for now we have wrestling in the SMSD middle schools and we are working hard to get a little better everyday. I want to thank the officials that we have had for the Trailridge duals. Bob Ford and Angelo Giacalone. They have done a fantastic job working with the kids and helping them work through the learning curve. Also, Sean McCarthy thank you for your positive input.
