According to the matrix about 5. Awesome idea really short notice for some of us a lot going on that weekend. Hope it doesn't flop and never get brought up again.

I agree! I think a super idea but such short notice I hear a lot that cannot go. Hope we can do it again in the future.

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/02/15 01:35 AM

I know a couple of you that posted, but I'm sorry, I'm calling BS. I feel like we have bent over backwards trying to give the HS kids a chance for more mat time, and for the BEST to meet each other in front of a LOT of people. My opinion is that if the HS kids don't take advantage of the Kansas Throwdown idea (Grand State), then we should answer the lack of appreciation by the HS kids, by getting rid of the HS division in the kids series, and moving the 6u in with the current Topeka state tourney. By the way, this is the last thing I really want to happen, because the 6u state, and Elementary State/Duals team qualifiers at Salina is an awesome event. If 6u moves to our state series, I guess we could combine the Elementary and Middle school tourneys for their respective dual team qualifers......

A kid has the right to pass on this opportunity, no doubt, no one is going to hold a gun to their head. But short notice isn't an excuse. What was there to prepare for? If you prepared for state, you are prepared for Throwdown/Grand State. It's on a Sunday, the day after either Classic tourneys and the NAIA tourney. And I'm not pretending to know everyone's schedule with other aspects of their lives. So I think the kids should take advantage of it and be able to say "I showed up to take on the best"....

I'm a little worried about Trowbridge being upset with me, but I don't care if I hack off Miss Jenni, cause I can whip her tail... Maybe........

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/02/15 04:13 AM

It sounds like a good tournament. I saw information out on this in January and confirmed on February 12th. I just wish they were having the weigh-ins on Sunday morning. Doug, Owen is to young to wrestle in this one. Good to see you back on the forum though. I talked to quite a few guys at Hartman, and they sounded like they would be in. See you all there.

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/02/15 04:32 AM

I believe we are working on various satellite weigh ins. We could easily accommodate them in Hays and Wichita.

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/02/15 12:14 PM

Definitely offering some satellite weigh ins would make it an easier "yes" decision.

I will be looking at the registration process with the Fredonia club coach today after school. We are looking to have around 5 register for the Throw Down.

Doug you ain't gotta worry about upsetting me. I'm not bothered by words on a screen. Its being yelled at I don't like lol. And we are still up in the air on whether we will go or not. Power lifting state is this weekend for the Basehor boys. We will have to see if our schedule will allow it. Though I'll admit the thought of wrestling some of the state champs will make dad nervous. Jon lost many matches and will lose many many more. We'll just have to see what shakes out. Am I over looking the cutoff date or is there one?

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/02/15 03:51 PM

Had no idea that tourney was this weekend, and have no idea how many wrestlers that will make miss this tourney.

Now I already put my foot in my mouth about supporting this event, I realized that I can't make it to support and watch, because we have our D2 seeding meeting this Sunday that I forgot about!!

I guess whether I get to watch or not, I want to KNOW who the baddest man in the entire state is, at each weight class. All of those conversations we have in the stands at 4A state, saying things like "4a is tougher in this weight class, 5a is tougher in this class, 6a in this one, etc. etc...." would be wasted breath. I hope we get the best of the best to wrestle in it. Obviously, without your son, being 4A state champ, it would not be as intriguing.

Make you nervous? I doubt it. You've always driven as far as you needed to drive to find someone that could whip your son. Selfish me would like to see all of those 126 kids in one bracket!!

I reread my post, and wasn't clear. The tourney I did NOT know about was the powerlifting tourney, and wondered aloud how many kids would miss the Throwdown, because of powerlifting tourney. I knew about the THrowdown from back in January I believe when it was first announced.

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/02/15 06:47 PM

Let me add that the powerlifting folks would probably get a lot more participants if they had it later in the spring, AFTER wrestling is over, so kids are back to full strength.....

Might have been part of the problem with the plan to add HS kids to Kids state series. Too far away from the end of HS season, so a lot of them don't do it. Out of shape by then, gained too much weight, etc. etc....If it were closer to the end of HS season, maybe more of them would have participated in it. This weekend is the best weekend to do it, so there should be no excuses about being out of shape, not cutting, cutting too much, etc. for those that go and compete.

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/02/15 07:00 PM

Power lifting is completely new to us. I agree it is at an odd time? but power lifting is huge at Basehor. And Doug I wouldn't count us out of participating this Sunday. I wouldn't mind seeing how Jonny hangs with some other 126ers. Plus my understanding is this tournament is going to help Chief Renegade make decisions for the Colorado dual teams

I am typically an opponent of USAWKS interference in local tournaments BUT I could support a ban on sanctioned tournaments the day of high school state and/or the day of a defacto Grand State. This would in effect, shorten the youth season some want.

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/02/15 07:07 PM

Noone had even brought up that point.....no hard feelings if your kid doesn't make the dual team, when he had a chance to go and leave no doubt.

Another good point.

Good luck, slap Phippen for me.......

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/02/15 07:13 PM

We will never shorten the Kids season until we end the state series on an earlier date. I do agree with your pints Sportsfan but those are fund raising opportunities for clubs and the idea being to get kids to attend HS state may work but doubtful. Until KSHSAA goes to Iowa and sees what a REAL HS state tournament looks like we will continue to have dismal attendance. I like the idea of merging 5A and 6A and then join 4A & 321A to have two classes and have 8 regionals. That qualifies two brackets of 32 for state, hmmm, the same number of wrestlers we have today! Place 8 and have a 3 day, two class tournament with final Saturday evening. It would be a real SHOW then. We might even have some college coaches attend. Now that we have a dozen or more programs in KS, maybe we should listen to the college coaches for suggestions.

The strength of Kansas wrestling has been for some time, our clubs and the quality of our high school coaching. Anything we do to lessen either of those will only hurt us in the end.

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/06/15 02:46 PM

There is absolutely no excuse to not show up to this event unless you have a funeral to attend for an immediate family member! If you think you are the best prove it! Talk is cheap! Taking time off if not injured does nothing beneficial at this point in the season. This should be one of your last folksyle tournaments of the year. Then you should transition into Freestyle/Greco in order to GET BETTER! If you have GOALS of becoming one of the best and competing competitively in College and you are not doing these things then you are kidding yourself!

GRAND STATE is here! It's time to settle the issue of 56 state champions in Kansas.

Remember that the top NAIA coaches across the nation will be in Topeka! I predict this event will get bigger and better each year. Get registered today to see who really is the BEST in Kansas!

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/06/15 03:45 PM

I find it funny all the parents on the forum through out the season complaining about where their kid was in the All-Class, how someone should be higher, how there is more 5A than 321A or 4A or it is easy to win a state tile in 4A than 6A Blah Blah Blah Blah. STOP COMPLAINING AND PROVE IT.

They listened and created an event to settle everything and find out the overall Champion. You arent signing up. That is sad.

And do not say you didn't know about it. Kids were talking about it way back at BL Tournament and the Paola Tournament. A majority of the kids knew.

I've taken several calls from folks "waiting to see who signs up". I've asked them to get signed up because if everyone waits it becomes a stalemate!

If you are one that is waiting, get to it and get signed up!

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/07/15 03:27 AM

I find it disappointing that this got set up and the number of participants is lacking. Come on wrestlers an opportunity is in front of you, and may not present itself again! Another weekend of wrestling keeps you in shape for USA wrestling state and the many national tournaments in the weeks ahead.

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/07/15 11:22 AM

If you look at the numbers of high school and 14U wrestling in Park City and Hays this weekend and take into consideration we have two teams of senior all-stars wrestling in different places Tuesday, I would say they are wrestling. They are just picking their spots and most likely closer to home.
Posted By: Aaron Sweazy

Re: KANSAS THROW DOWN - 03/09/15 04:08 AM

So this is just an idea, but how about target specific individuals (maybe use the All Class Rankings) and invite the best Kansas Seniors, and have them take on the best wrestlers from the United States (in conjuction with the NAIA festivities being there in Topeka). Individuals and teams are coming from all over the United States, why not open it up to one of those USA vs. Kansas type of duals (get sponsorship from USAW or somebody to help get the out of state kids there)!

Also how about a push for a Senior Kansas Team in 2016 to go take on the WPIAL Team at the Dapper Dan?
