2 of the 3 are only missing one spot, and one of those are a top ranked team anyway!

Great to see!

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 12:13 AM

Thank you to ALL the volunteers who helped make this regional, run like clock work. Couldn't have done it without you.

Lots of great matches, this weekend also. Good luck to ALL those that made it through, the battle grounds.

As for our Referees, 4 did GREAT! 1 NEEDS A REALITY CHECK, or someone to KNOCK, that chip off his shoulder.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 04:07 AM

ANYONE, Know the name of the ref, who was stall crazy, point deducting, unsportsmanlike, against, coaches/wrestlers? At Goddard's 5A regional? Would like to talk to KSHSAA, about him.

HE NEEDS TO GO!

I'll take a mistake, but an idiot, I can't swallow! 😡😡😡

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 09:48 AM

The guy was Great! Was not afraid to call stalling. Made kids wrestle. I'd take ten of him. Just to prove I'm not just saying that to argue, I went up and got his name from Mark Wright and commented what a great job he did.

How many DQ's did he call?

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 02:22 PM

I didn't see any, and don't think he awarded 2 points for stalling the entire tournament.

Pretty Sure Mark was sitting Mat Side. Alex, the official in question will be calling NJCCA National Tournament this coming weekend. Apparently he knows his stuff.

There were No DQs at the Goddard Regional. One wrestle was not allowed to continue for disciplinary actions from his school.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 08:17 PM

Maybe he does maybe he doesn't. When you have 10-12 coaches complaining and saying he's horrible, out of 16. Then there is a problem.

I agree, backing up the whole time should be called. EVERYTIME!

But, if a wrestler is fighting for position, whether in the middle of the mat, or toeing the line, sprawle's feet go out and you get dinged. Not a good call. Saw another instance, where one wrestler shot, missed came back up and other wrestler reshot, wrestler sprawled, got dinged. WHY? For using defense?

He needs to stay in NJCAA.

And you know FOR A FACT, he was the ONLY, ref to throw at least at minimum of 60-80 stall calls over 2 days. The other 4 combined might have thrown half that.

It's wrestling. But being dinged on your feet, while fighting for position, and no backward movement is crap.

Top and bottom, yes! Saw it a lot, one riding the hip, the other just laying there.

But on your feet, unless going straight back EVERYTIME, a stall call shouldn't be called. And FYI, a Russian is a stall tactic, if all you do is hold the arm and do nothing with it. Was it called? NO. Saw it more than once, and same ref, was on the mat.

Mark Wright was there and mat side. But no ref is gonna stand up and say, "that's a bad call to another ref." During a tournament. Might after over, but damage is already done.

That's my soap box.

Good luck to all next week.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 09:14 PM

10-12 little league coaches (dad's) that dont really know the rules is not very reliable.

The match you are talking about, wrestler that was called for stalling stepped back every start. Did not see one time his first step was forward. Let's not blame the official for a loss. Take responsibility.

More Kansas officials would do themselves a favor by calling stalling. I would love to have this guy at state and ten more just like him.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 10:26 PM

You would. And EACH AND EVERY WRESTLER IS DIFFERENT! Not ONE OF THEM GOES FORWARD RIGHT AFTER THE WHISTLE. Unless doing an ankle pick.

Those that are on the "Top" or "Really Good" size up their opponent, before confronting them.

Guess you wouldn't know.

And no on little league coaches, I was at tables both days. Heard it from all, on how bad he was.

Sorry, I know the truth, hurts, but it is what is is.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 10:31 PM

Alex is one of the best officials in the state IMO. He is very fair, and not afraid to admit when he is wrong. He calls a quick pin and also calls stalling. Two things i wish more refs called of. He was supposed to be at our regional this weekend and was pulled due to another offical getting sick. I would of loved to have him in our regional.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 10:39 PM

We vote for Alex every year when we are voting for post season officials. I've argued with Alex before and we've seen a situation differently a time or two, but he is one of the best officials in Kansas as far as I am concerned. I hate to hear that he is doing the NJCAA Championships next weekend as I was hoping he would be a Salina! Good for him getting selected for Nationals!

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 10:51 PM

I don't have a dog in this fight and I wasn't there for the tournament. But if the wrestlers, wrestlers dad's, wrestlers coaches, etc, etc are wanting their wrestler competing at the next level. Which I would hope is the case in most HS wrestlers then you better get prepared with the stalling calls being quick. Otherwise they are going to struggle in college. I wish more officials were quicker on the stall call it would make the sport more appealing to new fans.

Just my opinion.

I was only a 3x State Champion and on 2 National Championship Teams in College so I probably don't know about top tier or really good wrestlers. What are your credentials for knowing about how to be a top tier wrestler?

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 10:53 PM

Ok,
But you're putting a college ref into a high school event.

I'm pretty sure a lot of refs have done both. But they also can determine between high school and college.

If this is the road we are going down, then have KSHSAA, pay for or each regional pay for college refs. So everyone is on an equal playing field.

Make it fair to the wrestlers, going from one ref to another. Least he'll know, each and every match.

And I'm sorry, college rules are different than high school.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 11:00 PM

Stalling is Stalling no matter college or High School. Those rules are not different, for the most part. I only say that for one reason but it gets lengthy and really doesnt matter.

Most coaches want stalling called more often, as can be seen from this thread. You're the o my one speaking against it. Instead of criticising, we need to be thanking him and asking others to emulate him.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 11:08 PM

They call stalling in Oklahoma very similar to how Alex called it this weekend. Great Job!

Post the video of the match. Show us how wrong he was.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/19/17 11:19 PM

I think I have to disagree with you on all officials calling everything the exact same. That is not going to happen no matter what level of wrestling you are in. I think you are the one who said good or top notch wrestlers size up their opponents, well I believe those same wrestlers should be be able to adjust in the difference in officiating.

Again my opinion.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/20/17 01:06 PM

i was always told growing up never leave it in the hands of the ref to decide the match. Adjust to the calls and work with it. Alex is a damn good ref!!!

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/20/17 01:25 PM

One rule change i would like to see is finshing takedowns on the edge of the circle. I have watched so many times the ref has to argue with coaches and even discuss with other refs if the knee or foot was in or out of the circle. I watch so many kids wrestle the edge of the circle. Would it not help out everyone involved and maybe take some relief off the refs if this rule was changed. most full mats have 3-4 feet of mat for safety concerns outside of the circle. I think this is the way college calls it. If we are preparing our kids for that next level dont we kind of need to be using the same rules or at least some of them.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/21/17 05:29 PM

I remember getting hit for stalling in the finals of my conference tournament my senior year, I was stalling, he (Jim Ramirez) made the right call, his reasoning he told me "you are better than that", he was right!

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/21/17 05:59 PM

So much of stalling is vague. The call is always arbitrary. No two guys are ever going to call it exactly the same. And as far as it being called quickly and consistently at the next level I think you're sadly mistaken. I attended the biggest college dual of the year Sunday and it was definitely not called with any kind of consistency there. Just my two cents...

Your statement proves my point. No officials are going to be the exact same at any level. But as I stated generally speaking stalling is called much quicker at the next level, so why not prepare our HS wrestlers for that now so they know what's expected of them at the next level.

Re: Goodard Regional - 02/22/17 01:42 AM

I agree it should be called more quickly. Most officials problem is they call it different in the third period than they do in the first. There are several things I think are stalling that some may not, and there are some that I don't think are that are called a lot. The problem is there are too few clear cut "stalling" calls in the rule book. It's a judgement call. Hard to argue whether one is right or wrong. And I don't think asking for a clarification for why it was called should be an automatic warning.
