KSHSAA announces results of reclassification vote - 06/15/17 12:20 PM

The vote on reclassification has been announced by KSHSAA with both measures passing. You can see the details at kshsaa.org/Public/PDF/ClassificationBallotResults.pdf. The changes will go into effect for the 2018-19 season.

Time to consider combining 4A, 5A, and 6A State tournament in the same location.

Does this mean that 20 teams from the old 4A will now be added to 321A

Yes, 4A going from 64 to 36 schools will see 8 schools move up and 20 schools move down.

Old:
6A = 32
5A = 32
4A = 64
3A = 64
Total = 192

New:
6A = 36 (+4 from 5A)
5A = 36 (+8 from 4A)
4A = 36 (-20)
3A = 64 (+20 from 4A)
Total = 172

IMO it will help improve the post-season level of competition for 321A.

I know not all are full teams but it is more like 98 teams (not 64)in 3-2-1A plus 20 from 4A or around 118-120 teams

Re: KSHSAA announces results of reclassification vote - 06/16/17 12:50 PM

That could put these schools in 3-2-1A
Colby, Frontenac, Jeff West, Goodland, Burlington,
Smoky Valley, Rock Creek, Larned, Concordia, Scott City,
Columbus, Prairie View, Holton, Santa Fe Trail, Holcomb,
Anderson County, Clay Center

The problem remains the same.

6A -36, 5A -36, 4A 60 schools, so I take back what I said about combining the state tournaments.

So Brent you said 60 in 4A.
I know from prior notes in the KSHSAA minutes they considered special things 60 wrestling schools in 4A for wrestling but then the minutes and ballot say nothing about this so I take it that it is 36 in 4A not 60.
I would like this clarified but history tells me Greg Mann is well informed and knows what he speaks about.
Can anyone clarify?

Re: KSHSAA announces results of reclassification vote - 06/16/17 05:40 PM

The answer can be found in the proposal from the committee that studied the classifications. According to Mark Lenz, the study is what wrestling will follow, which is not what was voted on by KSHSAA schools. 36 schools in 6A, 36 schools in 5A, and 60 in 4A. The rest 321A. It is my understanding that KWCA suggested 48 schools rather than 60 for 4A but somehow 60 is what stuck.

So a proposal has passed and we do not know for sure the effect it has on wrestling. Furthermore, administrators who voted either for or against the proposal were not clear on the effect it would have on wrestling! Do you think a proposal would ever be voted on or passed by the KSHSAA member schools if its effect on basketball was unclear?? Of course not!!!

The disappointing thing for me is, there was something like 37 schools across all classes that abstained from voting all together! Thirty-seven administrators didn't feel it important enough to even vote!

That doesn't concern me too much. It was made very clear by KSHSAA in the information they sent to schools that abstaining was the same as voting NO. What wasn't made clear is what the heck this means for wrestling!!

The statement below seems clear, but the conversation on this thread isn't so clear. Are there additional KSHAA handbook changes not included?

From the original attachment:
"Accordingly, the change to Classification of Senior High Schools Rule 5, Section 2, Article 1, approved by the Board of Directors in April by a vote of 52-15, will become effective with the September 2018 classifications, for competition in the 2018-19 school year."

Then says.....
"Art. 1: All member senior high schools shall be divided into six Classes—6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A. Class 6A shall include the thirty-six (36) high schools with the largest enrollments; Class 5A the next thirty six (36); 4A the next thirty-six (36); 3A the next sixty-four (64); 2A the next sixty-four (64); and Class 1A, the remainder."

According to my AD, the proposal that Coach Lane referenced for wrestling is what will go into affect in the fall of 2018!

Re: KSHSAA announces results of reclassification vote - 06/19/17 02:11 AM

I was wrong. The KSHSAA sent out, along with the ballot, info as to how the proposal would affect for each sport and activity.

For wrestling the info had the following breakdown:
6A = 36
5A = 36
4A = 60
321A = Remaining Schools (90 schools)
