Battle of the Best - 03/19/18 10:21 PM

When will we know who is wrestling in the senior classic?
It would be nice to know if my son has to cut extra weight or not.

Either give a line up or I can promise kids will start dropping. Four days away and you can't tell us who is wrestling?

Here is the Match list for the Senior Classic on Friday.

Update: Gavin Ware v Nick Jouret and Max Bazan v Jared Habben matches will not happen due to scheduling conflict with wrestlers.

Thanks

Rumor has it the information was sent to the head coaches. We are just now finding out about this, and with the amount of social media that there is now days, I find it hard to believe there wasn't another way for the organizers to get a hold of Jace and or myself to ask him and or tell him he had been put on the roster. Jace hasn't stepped foot on a mat since the KS/MO duals. He will not be participating due to miscommunication.
Thanks

Will there be a 106 and a 113 pound weight classes?

No 106 or 113. First weight class is 126.

What happened to the Harris vs. Ware match at 120?
Why is there two 145 matches?
Are we trying to fill the open weights?

Ware and Harris are still wrestling!

Re: Battle of the Best - 03/21/18 01:31 AM

My son was looking forward to wrestling in the classic probably more so than wrestling in the tournament on Saturday and Sunday. He is wrestling at 126 and is willing to make weight for the 113 lb weight class if you can get someone.

I think getting Seniors at 106 and 113 would be difficult. Especially at such late notice. I'd like to see them go to College Weights, as hopefully must of these kids will Wrestle next year. They are already going by college out of bound rules, might be fun. Just 10 weights.

I've talked with two different people who have helped organize this event in the past. They both said it's like beating your head against the wall trying to get kids to committ. They Tell them they will think about it and never get back with them. Some want to wrestle but refuse to wrestle certain kids. I don't know if that was the situation this year. I was notified 3 weeks ago that one of my guys was invited. He accepted immediately and his projected opponent has changed 3 times. Sometimes the guys organizing this event are handicapped with trying to deal with knucklehead teenagers.

With that said, I think KWCA should learn from this year and get this set up a little quicker next year. Get a hold of coaches and if the kid is interested immediately contact parents. Get the ball rolling early. Maybe a little more Hype time to stir up interest.

I just dont get it when i hear kids turn it down because they wont wrestle certain kids or they are rusty. When i got the phone call to wrestle in it 11 years ago, i was jacked. I cant see turning down an opportunity to wrestle in front of all those fans and kids that have heard about you all year long, but are in a different classification. You get a shot to put on a show! I would of went even if they would of called me the day before and it was last minute and i live 3+ hours away from Topeka. I didnt step on the mat from State to the time of the competion except for 1 practice. I had to run a little to make weight and i was rusty but i didnt care. It was fun. Thats what this event is for.

Re: Battle of the Best - 03/22/18 12:37 AM

I think there were some wires crossed in our situation and nobody was on the same page. Jace wasn’t planning to wrestle this event to rest a banged up knee. It had nothing to do with opponent or rust. If you know that kid you know he’s eager to wrestle high level competition whenever possible. Like I said, I think the fact that he was even listed in the lineup was due to a miscommunication. Unfortunately, neither of our Olathe South seniors will wrestle Friday night, but we will all be in attendance. I know Coach Naughton has worked very hard to put together a great event. We’re looking forward to watching some of the states best in action!

Re: Battle of the Best - 03/26/18 06:09 PM

As one of the people who have organized this event in the PAST it can be frustrating experience. In the end it always came out well, the kids that wrestled did a great job and were appreciative of the experience, but there were certainly headaches in the process.

Getting ahold of the athletes, getting coaches to return calls/emails, getting the right numbers to contact, weight classes nailed down, kids scheduling around their other tournaments, spring sports, injuries, traveling to Topeka for one match, not wanting to wrestle a particular individual, it after spring break (or during for some schools), or just not wanting to wrestle at all are all reasons I've had for why a particular individual wouldn't/couldn't wrestle.

A BIG thank you to all the people who worked their tails off to get this put together, and an even BIGGER thank you to the wrestlers that strap it up one more time for their KS fans and put it on the line again.
