A Travesty

A Travesty - 02/27/22 03:30 AM

Now I know there aren't as many people on here anymore but I have to get this off my chest! A travesty occurred at the 5A state tourney this weekend. A senior had his whole dream of becoming a state champion stolen from him with an underhanded trick! Wyatt Weber of Greatbend was losing to Jevin Foust of Ark City 8-3 with a bit less than a minute left in the match. While Foust was staling and holding onto a leg near the edge of the mat, I guess out of desperation Weber began fish hooking him and putting his finger in Foust's mouth. Weber pulls his hand out and shows the ref who immediately DQs Foust with a flagrant "biting" and ends the match in Weber's favor. Weber then celebrates like he actually beat Foust by throwing his hands up and jumping around. This display of "sportsmanship" was exacerbated by the ref not explaining anything and leaving the mat while Foust's coaches tried to figure out what was going on. Why would a wrestler that is winning bite another wrestler? Why would the ref not use common sense and check the other wrestler, because Foust's mouth was bleeding from Weber's antics! This was bad and it was not the first time Weber had used underhanded tactics! Anyway what's done is done but it is very sad how it all ended! If you have a problem with what I posted my name is Anthony Whetstone my email is awhetsto@gmail.com. I would be happy to discuss this further.

Completely agree. The ref even said he never saw it happen. But Weber showed him his finger with blood on it so the ref called the DQ. The blood was from Foust’s mouth and the fish hook, not a bite.

The ref in that match was either incompetent or something worse. Doesn’t help the Foust or Ramirez family now but he should never be allowed to officiate a match ever again.

I wanted to make a rant about how terrible the refs were at the 5a west regional after last weekend but I decided not to and just hoped most of them would not be at 5a/6a state. Unfortunately the ref that made this brutal call was also who I thought did a terrible job at regionals. We need a system to hold the refs accountable

The refs were REAL bad at Regionals. Like you said the same ref that SCREWED Jevin was making terrible decisions at Regionals!!! KSHSAA needs to figure something out!

I doubt KSHSAA will do anything!

Apparently 138 was an issue in other places too... Why can't we have competent officiating?

Hate to bag on a kid but I got a gut feeling he’s going to be one of those people that knows this was his one shining moment and let’s everyone he hasn’t burned a bridge with know for the rest of his life and reminds whoever he’s dating know this before he puts his cigarettes out on her arm. Hope I’m wrong but it seems like a foregone conclusion.

Surely they didn't DQ Foust because Weber had blood on his finger. There had to at least be bite marks to consider disqualification right? Did the officials talk and discuss what they saw with each other? Buckbee's been around the block a time or two and isn't going to stand back and watch his kid get DQ'd without a fight because his opponent "said" he got bit. I'm not saying there wasn't some BS going on, but there has to be more to the story than Weber showing the referee a bloody finger, and if that's what happened, then you're right, that was a travesty! Did the match get scrubbed from Track? I went to watch it and the video stops right before the beginning of the 2nd period.

I watched the continuous Mat 1 stream that is about 9 hours long. Skip to 7 hours 20 minutes and you can see Weber vs Foust in the background on Mat 4. It doesn’t give you a good view of the “bite” but you can see how everything unfolds after it gets called.
