Qualifiers with losing records in 5A & 6A

Qualifiers with losing records in 5A & 6A - 02/21/05 08:28 PM

I was looking at regional results for 5A and 6A. I counted 38 wrestlers in 5A with losing records and 34 in 6A. This seems a lot more than past years. Is depth down some this year?

Anybody else have an opinion.

Why don't you put a team together of 3,2, and 1A, and I'll put together a team from the other three classes.

Nigel,

You have a point. Only a handful of wrestlers with losing records in 4A and 1-3A. Its more difficult to go through 60 something schools than 32.

Even though I'm a big school fan, I think 5A and 6A are some what watered down based on number of schools. In my opinion Kansas should assign classes differently for wrestling.
I know KSHSAA will never let it happen.

I think 5-6a should be combined for wrestling.

It is hard for most 321A schools to fill a full roster anymore but as far as the talent goes there will always be more winning records....does anyone know how many losing records 321A has? 4A? we know 5A & 6A already

well i would have to agree...but if you think about 4A has just as many losing recods...its just the ones with the losing records arnt making it to state because reginals are a lot harder in 4A, mostly because its a 16 man bracket compared to a 8 man bracket...so it just comes up as that 5A and 6A have more losing records because of haveing 32 teams instead of 64...so 4A is not nessisarly harder or better its just harder for the less talented kids to make it...and it will all even out at the end...it just diffrent with each weight class...so in actuallity it doesnt matter if your 1-3A or 4 5 or 6A its just whos where in what weight class

having a losing record doesn't mean anything....I lost 13 matches-10 of which are from oklahoma....you cant say one class is tougher than another just by people having losing records.

Re: Qualifiers with losing records in 5A & 6A - 02/22/05 01:01 AM

so 5A & 6A have 1/2 as many kids multiply their total of SQ w/ losing records by double and they have even more losing records if they had the same amount of teams, just going by comparison here.....I'm not saying that 4A is the GOD class in Kansas wrestling but it's strives ahead in depth

Some classes are stonger at certain weight classes than others. Schedules vary from school to school. Kansas wrestling is Kansas wrestling. Period!

Those losing records more than likely don't make it through a two day tournament, that is the nature of the beast. Quit trying to downgrade the quality of competition in 5A and 6A because of some losing records. You can't say any class is better than any other class due to records of individuals going into the state tournament. That just isn't right. There are different approaches for the different classes. At State, top to bottom, the top 6 in each class are just as worthy and deserving as the top 6 in the smaller classes.

I will agree that some weight's are watered down. But have you looked at the regional's.The Campus regional had a lot of top school's there.Paola and KC-Turner are just plain week.If the regional's were separated more evenly less chance of loosing records getting in.

5a and 6a with 32 schools each, several not wrestling or having full teams... why not save a lot of time and money and just have a 32 man bracket and eveyone wrestles for the state title? When I think of how much money is spent going all over the place to regionals just to try to qualify, this would make sence to me. 1 more round of matches on the front side, 1 one the back side, and there you have it. I don't reckon you could do that in 321 or 4a, but a 32 man state bracket for 5 and 6 would be doable and darn exciting.

I've had teams in both 4A and 5A in recent years. It is definately harder to qualify in the smaller classes. I don't think that makes the classes easier or tougher. That will change from weight to weight and year to year. When you make the finals in any of the classes, you are a quality wrestler deserving of the recognition you receive.

I wouldn't mind seeing 5A and 6A combined to make a 64 team class, like the smaller classes. As it is now, half of those competing (if all weights are full) qualify for State and 1 out of every 6 will get a State Medal in both 5A and 6A. On our last trip to a 5A regional, we sent all but 1 to the State. While I was extremely pleased for those going, Our team had only one a couple of duals in the CTL and I had 3 guys qualify who had never placed in a tournament all season.
