The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/14/08 05:42 PM

The Junior/Cadet National Team Camp has begun in McPherson and we are less than a week away from the start of the 2008 Junior/Cadet Nationals. Randy Hinderliter and I will be traveling up to Fargo on Thursday and will try to get you updates and pictures as time permits.

You can see the preliminary roster of our Women's, Cadet and Junior teams by clicking here.

Once weigh-ins are completed and wrestling begins, you'll be able to get up-to-date brackets on TrackWrestling.com.

With 904 Cadets entered for Greco, those numbers are slightly up from last year's 873. So much for $4 gas!

Chief what about Caylor and Detmer? They were studs last year as Cadets. No love for them as Juniors, whats up with that.

Detmer is on my list! Caylor was king last year as a Cadet, but being a first year Junior is much deeper water. He has a fantastic future ahead and I have plenty of love for him coach, but predicting an AA at 215 as a first year Junior is a tall order. I sure hope he proves me wrong!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/18/08 03:10 PM

Hey ya' all ... a bit of update from Fargo!

The Jubster and I arrived last evening about 6 pm and met up with Coach Peterman. We also saw Coach Bogren and Coach Ogden and a few of the gals that represent Team Kansas.

This morning, a bus load of Cadets arrived. They are all registered and re-charging their batteries. They have a practice session this afternoon!

Every year I talk a lot about the anticipation! Chief has already supplied you with his opinions. I don't have much argument ... but will echo, those Cadets AA's from last year will have a tough road to hoe when they move up to Juniors! And of course, it is all in the draws!!

The 160# class as well as the 135-pounders will find the competition very tough indeed!

And a real tough 285 class may have gotten a bit easier as my information says that Atticus will not make the tourney.

Every year we have a few surprising individuals that seem to rise to the occasion. Also, we have a couple of "our studs" that will really struggle this week.

Over the years I've lamented over the fact that gaining "All-American status" is too easy in certain situations. However, if you achieve that rank in Fargo ... you have earned it!!

I can't help but remember we have had wrestlers in the past that were 0-4 in a given year. But in the following year, they were National Champions!! Perhaps someone that didn't garner a win last year will be the Champ this year!!

We will see!!

Howdy from Fargo!

Weigh-ins for Cadets are tomorrow morning at 7 am. Wrestling starts at 9:30 am.

At this tourney you get some kids moving around a bit! Missouri has 3 kids at 112#'s who have been National Champs!!

Probably my next report will be tomorrow from the FargoDome!

I have a Bronze course and the first session is at 7 am. With that in mind, it will be early to bed for me!!

Cokeley goes on to exploit the position for another gut in the first 30-second period. Ryne's defense is superb and he wins the 1st-period, 7-1.

After a scoreless minute of the 2nd frame, Ryne wins the flip. Ryne gains a 2-point turn in the last second. His defense is again sound and he wins the bout, 7-1, 3-0!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/20/08 09:13 PM

Jason Siebel scores a 2-point gut to win the 1st-period, 2-2. Jason loses the flip in the 2nd frame and gives up a 2-pointer. He takes his turn in the dominant position ... he gains 2-points on a caution and another 2 on a turn however his foe scored the reversal to tie the period at 4's ... but because there was a caution ... Jason Siebel wins the period and the match!!!

Tyler Koehn picks up the 3-0, 6-0 decision win!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/20/08 09:22 PM

Chase Nelson takes his turn! Chase misses the head-lock but stays with the hip toss. He gathers the head and earns the pin win!!

Howard Johnson suffers a loss.

Kyle Caylor scores the win, 8-0, 8-0!

Nathan Furches earns the pushout in the 1st frame and exploited the position in lifts for 3 and for 5 ... Nathan wins the period, 9-0. In the 2nd frame, Nathan again earns the single and in the par terre position ... lifted for his 2nd 5 of the match!

is on the board!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/20/08 10:22 PM

Gary ... I am not positive but Jason is not on the list for a match coming up!

Tommy Williams is on Mat 1! The first minute is scoreless ... Tommy wins the flip ... and earns the 2-point gut. But Tommy scores the leg foul and loses the period, 2-2.

In the 2nd, Tommy gives up the takedown ... but later scores a 2-pointer. Tommy is on top ... scores a 2-point gut. His foe can't garner a turn and Williams wins the 2nd.

In the 3rd, Tommy earns 1 for the takedown and 1 for the hand-to-hand ... but gives a reversal. One-minute to go ... Tommy can't manage to score ... 30 seconds to go ... the score is tied at 2 ... but his foe can't turn him so Tommy wins, 3-2!

Big Steve had a solid win, 5-0, 3-1!
Posted By: usawks1

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/20/08 11:03 PM

Shavlik is wrestling Ness ... they're scoreless after 1-minute ... Cody wins the flip ... Ness gains his feet ... Ness scores 1 ... Cody is lifted for 1 ... he loses the period, 0-2.

In the 2nd, Cody goes for the head-lock ... Ness counters for 1 and then scores on a pair of 2-pont guts ... after 1-minute, Ness agains scores on the gut ... Shavlik battles tough but loses, 0-2, 0-6.
Posted By: usawks1

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/20/08 11:14 PM

Chase Nelson is in a real battle ... he wins the 1st-period, 1-1.

In the 2nd, Chase gains 1 ... he gains 2 for an exposure ... his foe reverses for 1 ... 30 seconds to go ... the opponent scores 2 on a gut that went out-of-bounds ... Chase loses the period, 3-4.

In the 3rd, the foe scores 1 ... with 1-minute to go ... Chase has sound defense the score is tied ... Chase scores on the gut ... and again ... Chase wins the bout, 1-1, 3-4, 5-1!

Mango won the flip in the first-frame and neither wrestler had any offense by Mango won as he was the last to be awarded a point.

In the second-frame, Nathan won the flip but was unable to score. With 30-seconds to go ... Mango quickly lifted Nathan and dropped him for a five.

Let's see if Chase Nelson can finish his quest. He is battling Wally Figero of FL.

After 1-minute they are scoreless ... Nelson wins the flip ... he quickly lifts but Figero leg fouls ... 2-0 as they enter the last 30 seconds ... Chase gets lifted and is awarded 5 for the toss.

Suddenly Chase gets the fall!! WOW!!!

Sorry again ... things went a little nuts!! In that second period ... Figero tried a head-and-arm but slipped ... Chase quickly moved out front ... lifted Figero's head, put in the snake and in about 10 seconds ... it has all over!!

Chase Nelson is the lastest NATIONAL CHAMPION from Kansas!!

That makes 7 fall for the tourney!!!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/22/08 12:59 AM

Great job by the Cadets! I only watched Deshazer and Nelson's matches in the finals.

Deshazer looked tough. It's too bad that par terre is such a timing issue now. It did appear he was reacting early...but that's ridiculous that rules like these decide national championships.

Nelsons Match...I agree...questionable 5 point call. 7 pins in a tourney is domination! Outstanding tourney.

The livesportsvideo feed is great...I encourage others to check it out for matches tomorrow (it's free).

Tough break for Steve. He beat Saevre, but is wrestling for 5th place while Saevre is in the 3rd place match.
Posted By: NCCC WRESTLING

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/22/08 02:25 PM

If I am reading that bracket right for big Steve, he just eliminated the only guy that Kober of Iowa hadn't wrestled yet. Now a 3 way tie...all men have wrestled each other.

Points against each other accumulated-
Kober had 5 unless you count it like dual scoring, then add 1 for scoring in a loss vs. Saerve = 6 pts

Saevre had 3pts for beating Saerve and scored against Andrus (if they count that point, it would be 4

Big Steve had a 3pt decision and lost by fall against the other 2.

I believe they go most points, then break the next tie by heads up...if that is the case...Steve should be going for 3rd.

Now if they go by points accumulated total to place you into your medal match...Saerve would have 4 and Steve only 3 with the point scoring system.

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/22/08 02:38 PM

Vesta is up ... scoreless after 1-minute ... Vesta wins the flip ... nothing for Vesta ... the Bama kid gets a turn and wins the period.

In the second ... again, scoreless ... Bama wins the flip ... Vesta's D is tough ... Vesta can't score and loses.
Posted By: usawks1

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/22/08 02:39 PM

Once in a while, you lose to the wrong kid, at the wrong time, in the wrong manner ... it really costs you. Such is what happened to Steve!

That situation will be remedied next year as there will be a rule change ... but it is too late for Steve-O!

The wrestlers are scoreless after 1-minute ... Rabinowitz wins the flip ... Vesta's defense is rock solid ... 30 seconds to go ... Vesta scores on the turn and wins the period, 2-0.

Again, scoreless ... again the flip is won by Rabinowitz ... Vesta's defense remains solid ... Vesta scores three ... Jeff Vesta wins, is your 5th place finisher, and is an All-American!!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/22/08 08:10 PM

Nathan Furches is pitted against Kent Williams of Illinois.

(One thing that is difficult is trying to cover two matches that are occurring at the same time, especially when they are in differents parts of the arena. Nathan was wrestling at the same time as Sharky. Nathan was on a mat in which I could only see the clock. At first, I mistakenly reported Nathan as winning 3rd)

Nathan Furches did finish 4th and is an All-American!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/22/08 08:12 PM

Sharky is facing Steiber from Ohio but never can get anything going. Sharky who did a fantastic job to this point ... in earning the runner-up spot.

Sharky Slyter is an All-American!!

Man Sharky got hit in a pretty wicked front headlock. Congrats to him for making the finals though.

The kid the beat Sharky was just in Sports Illustrated last week or the week before as an athlete of the future.

And a correction, Nathan took 4th.

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/22/08 09:24 PM

Kyle Detmer found Jake Bohn of Michigan a bit too tough. Kyle tried valiantly, but trailed throughout and was eventually pinned. Kyle finishes 8th as a first-year Junior and is an All-American!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/22/08 09:54 PM

Tyler Koehn, who looks like a 171-pounder was wrestling, Mark Stenberg of Illinois, who looked like a 189-pounder ... this matchup was at 160-pounds!

It was a very close battle and Tyler was not able to use his great gut for any offense ... he lost the match in 3-periods.

Tyler Koehn is an All-American!

Big Steve is up ... scoreless after one ... the Badger wins the flip ... his defense is sound ... Steve can't score and loses the first period.

Again scoreless ... Big Steve wins the flip ... but he can't score ... neither can the Badger ... Steve wins the period.

It gets tough when your match is left to a flip ... but once again, in spite of hard work we have a flip ... Steve wins ... Steve can't score ... Steve Andrus wins! Andrus is an All-American!!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/23/08 12:09 PM

It's a beautiful morning in Fargo, ND! The temp right now in 66 but will rise to a balmy 82!!

For once (knocking on my head) we've had very mild weather the entire trip so far. Of course the 100's of hanging flower baskets that NDSU has lining their streets are flourishing. They always look good but this year they do look great.

Still, there is a lot of construction. We have a sidewalk and street crew working just outside our dorm. They start at 7 am and go until at least 7 pm. Those of you that have been reading for years are aware that I've often praised Fargo for their tremendous sidewalks ... and that still is the case!

The Student Union has gone through a complete rehab. Even the FargoDome has gone through extensive additions. It truly is quite a complex.

The arena itself is beyond dreams! On the floor, they can hold 23 mats, a head table that probably accomodates 75, and a media table that handles 20. Still, it does not feel crowded!! I truly wish we had something half that size back home.

The Cadet Freestylers have weighed in and wrestling starts at 9:30 am. In Greco, the youngers had 6 All-Americans. That included a National Champion!

How many All-Americans will we have in Freestyle ... will there be a National Champ?

Conservatively ... my estimate is 6 or 7 AA's ... and 1 National Champ! Here's to hoping I miss ... low!!

... I guess as long as the Critter made weight, Brandon has to wrestle ... it!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/23/08 09:12 PM

Wow I just checked out the Cadet 119 bracket. The wrestler that beat DeShazer in the grec finals (Aaron Runzo fo Virginia) went 1-2 in freestlye and is out of the tourney.

Is this kid just a greco kid or did he just get a tough draw?

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/23/08 09:19 PM

Joshua Bush lost the 1st period, 1-7. In the second, he was pinned.

Leo Beck lost his second bout.
Posted By: usawks1

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/23/08 09:23 PM

In my estimation ... Daniel would beat Runzo 7, maybe 8 times out of 10. The two cautions Daniel picked up were the deciding factor in the outcome!

But 119 is loaded ... Charby can attest to that! From what I've been told there were 66 entries for Greco and 97 entries for Freestyle.

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/23/08 09:27 PM

I agree with your prediction on the 7 or 8 out of 10. I was just wondering. Wow 97 kids in one weight class thats huge.

John Denner is leading the first period 5-0 ... he picks up another point and wins the 1st. In the 2nd, Denner takes a 3-0 lead ... Big John scores the fall and advances!!

Jesse Austin suffers his second loss.

Zach Vesta "wrestled his best match of the day," according to Coach Peterman ... in winning 1-0, 2-1!

Patrick Cervantes scores with 2 seconds left to tie the match and win the period! In the second, Patrick takes a 2-0 lead ... he wins the period by pin! Cervantes made a huge sacrifice and reduced his weight for this tournament ... he's looked great ... and is the surprise of Team Kansas!

Chase Nelson, to nobodies surprise, picks up another win!

It took Parker a little while to get on-track but he does, winning 2-5,6-0,6-0!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/24/08 11:55 AM

Randy,
Thanks for all your hardwork. I have sent an email to two sports writers in Wichita hoping to gain some more exposure for the Kansas guys. I would urge others to do the same (your local paper or news media)and include a link to this site so that the writers could follow along. Kansas is having great success and needs to strike while the iron is hot. Even though I'm not coaching in my new state (yet), I'm saddened that I have only 2 athletes from SC to follow in this event. Checking in on Kansas keeps the fire burning. Keep up the great work team Kansas!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/24/08 01:16 PM

I'd also like to thank Randy for his contributions in posting these updates. This morning, during one of the (way too many) meetings held up here, we were reminded that this is the 16th year that the Junior/Cadet National Championships have been held in Fargo. Included with our state's delegation at this event are some people who I believe have been here every one of those 16 years, and should receive acknowledgement. First are Chuck and Cherie Elvin - Cherie is here working as a pairings official and Chuck is here in his capacity as the assistant director of the Junior Council and board member of USA Wrestling. When the nationals were moved to Fargo, Chuck was the state chairman for Kansas.

Also included in this list are coach Dennis Charbonneau and mat official Mark Anderson, with coach Scott Rieck coming in close behind them. By comparison, I'm a newby on the block, experiencing my eleventh trip up here. Seven years ago I enticed Randy Hinderliter into coming with me to experience the event and, although he had to leave early that year, managed to thoroughly hook him - something that I'm sure is greatly appreciated by everyone following his reports.

Here is a complete list of this year's Kansas delegation, all of whom are working hard and representing your state well. If you know any of these individuals I would ask that you thank them for the work they do on behalf of our state and its athletes:

Junior Coaches:
Mike Garcia
Scott Rieck
Austin DeVoe
Jarrett Edison

Cadet Coaches:
Tom Peterman
Dennis Charbonneau
Russ Hermreck
Mike Church
Matt Jobe

Pairings Officials:
Cherie Elvin
Marcie Altman
Cindy Shavlik

Mat Officials:
Mark Anderson
Charles Knox
Drew Anderson

Other Delegates:
Chuck Elvin
Mike Juby
Randy Hinderliter

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/24/08 01:19 PM

I want to take this moment to point out the efforts of a few others who do Kansas proud! That being our mat officials and our pairing officials.

Across the way beside Mat 1, our Mark Anderson is conducting a rules clinic. We are fortunate to have Mark. He is one of the fixtures at the National level competitions and Inter-Nationally he is becoming a key component.

Charlie Knox has been coming to Fargo for several years. His enthusiasm is contagious! Perhaps his greater asset to Team Kansas is as a club coach!!

Also filling the bill as a coach who officiate is Drew Anderson. Drew is a fantastic young man who is impacting the State and National scene.

Our pairing officials at Fargo are Marcie Altman, Cindy Shavlik and Cherie Elvin. Clearly, between those three, they help insure this tourney runs smooth!

Last but certainly now least is Chuck Elvin! As you know Chuck represents the needs of Kansas, sitting on several boards and committees' within USA Wrestling. And if those duties aren't enough, he is a constant fixture matside ... being a fan of Kansas wrestling and showing his support!!

There have been others in the past and hopefully there will be others in the future!

In the second ... his opponent gains a pushout ... Kendric back to the double for one ... Kendric gains a pushout ... then throws the head-and-arm for a 3+1 to the pin to win the bout!

For those Kansas wrestlers who are losing out (or their parents), I just want to remind you that you are up against the toughest competition that this country has to offer.

Do not be discouraged.

This is the toughest of sports and you have trained very hard just to get there. The dues that you are paying now will pay huge dividends for you when the high school season rolls around!!

Summer wrestling makes winter champions!!

Thanks for committing yourselves to the task and for representing Kansas well!!!!

Curtis,

I'm back at the dorm in between sessions, so I actually have better access to the Internet than Randy does right now! So I'll answer your question for him.

Shavlik failed to make weight for freestyle. Since the next weight class up did not have any available spots, he had to move up two weight classes (three weight classes above his Greco-Roman weight class). He went to medical with some pains after his first match, after which he withdrew from competition.

Thanks Mike. That's a real bummer after his performance in Greco. Making weights half the battle though.

I just wanted to say thanks to everybody that continues to post the updated results and information. More people are checking your updates than may be passing out thanks. I just wanted to let you know my appreciation. Most of the time I'm too busy all day to post a comment but I am checking about 20 times a day on my PDA or work computer or home computer. Thanks for the updates!!!!!

Good job to all the Kansas wrestlers that are in Fargo, all of them.

That young man from Ohio that Dapper beat first thing this morning is a tough wrestler. That kid beat Dapper in Southern Plains and I believe Dapper has never beaten him before. Great Win for him. I'm sure the ones that wrestled both styles are getting tired and have a few aches and pains. Keep up the good work!! I'm watching and many more are too.

4th place on the B side has been determined. The other 3 guys are:

Soto - 3 points - ONE match vs. Cokeley.
Lanave - 1 point - ONE match with Cokeley.
Cokeley - 0 points with TWO matches to go!

It is in Ryne's control to make the final. Win those two matches and he's in!

Tyler Caldwell wins by tech fall!

Detmer with the body lock for 5 ... in the 2nd, tosses for 3 ... gains a single ... gains a pushout ... and closes it out with a takedown!

Koehn with the tech fall!

Today, I want to mention a couple of other groups! One, is the parents and family members of our wrestlers. As I get around the arena I hear fans cheering our wrestlers on ... those fans are loud and proud citizens of Kansas!

I must announce, that the "sweater vests" have arrived in Fargo! Yesterday, Coaches Keal and Albright arrived ... today I see coach Mike Medina is also present!

All of these folks make me proud I am from Kansas!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/25/08 03:23 PM

Wow...

At 145, Nelson had 4 points in the medal round and was in a 3 way tie. Due to the tie-breaker rules, Roulo is in the finals even though Chase beat him! The classification points had Roulo at 27 and Chase at 26, due in part to a bye that Chase had!

Classification points are ahead of head-to-head????

That hurts. Chase will wrestle for 3rd place.

Chase Nelson is a Greco National Champ and 3rd place finisher in Freestyle!

Great job cadets, juniors and the ladies. At least 1 finalist in every group. Mutiple AA's and many great battles by all the wrestlers. One more day. My index finger is killing me from clicking back and forth between trackwrestling, usawks, & themat.

My Bronze training has taught me to apply the R.I.C.E. formula for those strains and sprains!!

I've learned from some up here that B.A.R.L.E.Y. works well too ... in fact I think I will try that tonight!

I must admit though that some of these wrestlers our boys were running into are a step above! If we ever hope to crack that top 5 we, as coaches and as a State, need to step it up!!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/26/08 03:49 PM

A few quick observations ... the 2008 edition of Team Kansas represented the folks back home, with class, and a lot of hard work!

Even those that went 0-4 for the Fargo trip ... the experience should have been tremendous! Now, take a few days off ... then get in the weight room and work on your core strength exercises!

We had several wrestlers that made an impression in Fargo! We have a bunch that were just one or two matches short ... keep after it and improve in the technical areas!

The final tallies for All-Americans were pretty good for Kansas! We have two National Champs!! But I for one, am greedy and want more!

The experience of Fargo is something every wrestling fan should experience! As a few of our coaches have said, "it's all about the stories!" And ... it truly is!

That's it for now ... ttfn

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/28/08 10:40 PM

I, for one, would like to increase our placing in these results! How do we accomplish that?

We need to increase the number of wrestlers we take to this tourney! My rough estimate would be that the top tier States are talking over 40 wrestlers each. For instance, Ohio had 133 entrants in the Freestyle-division alone. We had 53!

However, numbers alone do not mean success! New Jersey had 18 Cadets entered in Greco and they scored, 32-points. In Cadet Freestyle, Oklahoma had 16 entered and they also scored 32-points. Also in Junior Greco we had 17 wrestlers that scored 26-points!

We need to increase the numbers AND the quality! We all realize that Kansas left several quality wrestlers at home and perhaps that is a separate discussion. But as I said in an earlier message we have wrestlers that need to increase their core strength and we have a few that have plenty of stregth that got beaten by superior technique. However, we have a bunch that need, increased strength and technique.

But that takes decidacation! Maybe we need an increased level of dedication … and dedication beyond themselves! We need to make a serious effort to improve in all areas. Also, I am not sure in that past several years we have made a serious run at the team spirit award. Are we really supporting each other the way we should?

We also need increased dedication by our coaches! The level of commitment by our Cadet and Junior staffs is outstanding but they have wrestlers coming to them in June that have limited skills. This too, I have talked about before but overall, our coaches, whether kids level, middle school level or high school, need to develop a higher skill level in our wrestlers!

I guess I’ve said enough for now … it’s your turn!!

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/28/08 10:51 PM

I think our biggest problem is dedication all around whether it be the kids, coaches or even in some cases the parents. I think one thing that would be a big help is if more clubs offered summer wrestling programs. That would make it more available to kids that may not be able to make it to the few cities with clubs. I think we also need more tourney's. It's hard to get mat time when there's only a handful of tournaments offered in the state before the big tourneys come up.

Another thing I think hurts our results is that it doesn't seem like our kids take as much pride in Fargo as some of the top tier states do. Our kids are focused on high school state a whole lot more than Fargo, which is understandable. Other states though like Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania to name a few, have a lot more pride when it comes to Fargo.

I think we've got the wrestlers, and the coaches to be able to wrestle with any state in the country though. We just haven't made it over that hump yet. I think with a little more dedication out of everybody will get us up and over the hump and we'll be right there with the top 3 states.

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/29/08 02:38 AM

I am new to Kansas Wrestling, a transplant from Montana. While Montana is not necessarily known as a hotbed for wrestling, the state has produced some exceptional talent. I won't pretend to know the training plan that was established for Team Kansas, so I apologize up front if I am speaking way out of turn. I just want to share a vignette on my experience with summer wrestling as it was one that I believe contributed to a great deal of success for me and my team mates. We used to pile into vans and go to 2 camps prior to leaving for tournaments in Vegas, Indianapolis etc.. The first camp was a week in Great falls Montana under the supervision of our very best high school coaches and other clinicians in the state. We would then move in our vans to a 10-day intensive camp in Oregon where we trained and wrestled against teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho...even a few kids from Canada. The bottom line is that these camps were not one-a-day practices. They were intense camps with morning conditioning, technique and situation live sessions in the morning and afternoons, and live wrestling in the evenings. Iron sharpened iron in these sessions, and we were absolutely prepared to wrestle in the national tournaments. But, we also formed a tight-knit family of wrestlers based on the hardships we shared in these camps. I offer this because I think there are opportunities to partner with adjacent states to generate some pre-fargo training experiences that would improve performance. Just some thoughts...

Re: The Fargo Report 2008 - 07/29/08 01:49 PM

This is going to be a bit long but since the door is opened, here's my 2 cents......

I also come from Montana and agree with what Mike said. I submit that the biggest difference is that our kids season was only 3 months long (Jan to March) and we wrestled freestyle, not folkstyle in kids club.

Given the way things are here in KS, I offer these thoughts....

1. I am not sure if I agree with the dedication on the kids or coaches comments. I think we have bunch of people dedicated to the sport of wrestling. I think the season my be too long. We start practice in November and go to the end of March (that's folkstyle), then you transition into freestyle/greco from Apr to July, throw in a camp or two during the summer, now start pre-season training (Aug to Oct) for those not playing football, etc. Do you need to do this to AA at Fargo.....absolutely. The challenge becomes time and resources for coaches and parents. I think if the folkstyle season for kids were shorter, then more would do freestyle and greco. This in turn would help their experience base when they get to be Cadets.

2. I would like to see more emphasis put on a "grassroots" training program for coaches that focuses on freestyle and greco. One of the reasons we don't see the # of clubs offering freestyle/greco is because we lack experience for coaching.

Proposed Solution: Establish a "Train the Trainer" type program. This involves establishing a baseline of freestyle and greco technique that we want all the kids to know. Get a group of experienced coaches and develop teams of trainers that can teach other coaches this technique and how to coach it at practices. Develop a teaching methodology that can be taught to these new coaches. These teaching teams then could go to clubs that want to start or improve thier freestyle/greco programs. The focus would be on training coaches. We could leave them with practice plans and dvd's so they can review and refresh once the clinic is over.
I think this would help train the coaches and grow the freestyle/greco training base in our state.

2. Establish regional freestyle/greco training sites. This would allow us to share coaches and the workload. This would also allow us to bring in upper level athletes to offer clinics. I think bringing in Lindsay Durlacher was an awesome idea. It would be great to be able to offer a 3-5 day freestyle/greco clinic and bring in that level of instruction. We are spoiled in NE KS because we have one of the best (Erik Akin) that helps a lot of the kids in this geographic area.

This is a lot of rambling but if we really want to improve our freestlyle/greco then there are 2 issues we must resolve....

1. Length of folkstyle season. Too long, too many resources for coaches, kids and parents in order to then do freestyle.

2. Improve freestyle/greco coaching base so more clubs feel comfortable offering freestyle/greco.

Just my thoughts.

As for #2 ... in the past several years, we have tried to offer USAW Silver College in Kansas at the Southern Plains camp. All three times it failed miserably due to a lack of numbers.

Also twice, I think, at the Southern Plains camp we did have a coaches camp. I believe the most he ever had in those offerings was five!

Perhaps Kansas will be best known as a Folkstyle state! Perhaps our coaches do not see the benefit in Summer wrestling!

... and perhaps that is a testament of the why I don't see #1 ever happening!

Perhaps Kansas will be best known as a Folkstyle state! Perhaps our coaches do not see the benefit in Summer wrestling!

For those who desire taking their wrestling to the next level - Do college coaches see the benifit in Summer Programs?

Will college coaches also somewhat favor a kid that is somewhat average in folkstyle, but has a good freestyle / Greco back ground over say someone who has none at all?

What we run into with the Summer program is it seems we are loaded with the lighter weights and for most of the kids 160lb and above practice partners are few and far between, and they are getting most of their live full blown competition is at the camps or the tournaments.
