really hate how the junior and cadet squad can travel great distances just to get bounced out in one match. would changing to double elimination for the age restricted groups really be that difficult to implement?

Our entire Greco Program needs an overhaul. Coach Lindland has his work cut out for him. I realize he was a late spring hire, and the best he can do is work this summer is work with the talent he has.
After the senior World Championships he is going to have to put together a program that elevates these guys to another level. I'm not sure what happen to our Greco Program. in 2007 we won a World Team title at the senior level, we had an incredible development program at northern Michigan (Coach by World Silver medalist Ivan Ivanov), where most of those kids in the Northen Michigan program were challenging the senior level guys and consistently winning Junior World medals. USOEC wrestlers absolutely dominated the FILA Juniors and University Nationals, and one USOEC wrestler at the time (Lester) made a World Team and medaled at the Senior level.
The solution is investing in the development program. The USOEC program lost alot of funding (no full scholarships anymore), while by comparison, the freestyle program has expanded it Regional Training Centers throughout the U.S. (almost all the top colleges for wrestling - Penn State, Ohio State, Minnesota, Arizona State, Iowa, Iowa State) has a regional training center for freestyle, and their student athletes are on scholarship. Not so with Greco, and until this changes we will continue to see the results.
The options also for senior level involvement are very sparse. Essentially it boils down to the U.S. Army's WCAP program, or Minnesota Storm. Two great programs, but Lindland is going to need to create some incentives for new senior level clubs to emerge. In 2007 the year we won the World's in Greco all of the armed force greco programs were competitive, we had Minnesota storm, Gator club, NYAC, and as I stated earlier a very, very strong USOEC program that was pushing the senior level wrestler.
I think we can get back, and surpass where we were. If your reading this coach Lindland, I have confidence that your the man you can guide to a new level.
With all that being said, I'm optimistic about Coon's chances in Greco,

Unfortunately nothing too shocking here... we don't typically tend to fair very well in international Greco-Roman at the younger age groups (below senior) and sometimes struggle even at the senior level.
I thought that our best hopes for medals were going to be Chavez, Coon, and Beazley and probably in close to that order. With Greco you never know and one of the other guys could surprise us tomorrow but I would imagine Coon is our best bet.
I really thought Chavez would be our best bet given that he tends to be particularly dominant domestically and comes across as more of a true Greco specialist displaying a good skill set for the style and that is bolstered by his Cadet world medal last year. However, the move from Cadet to Junior is a big one. It would appear that he was at least not blown-out in his lose.
In the long run just not sure we grasp the nuances / get the full-time high level training in this style to be competitive with the rest of the world at the younger ages. Folkstyle being relatively similar to freestyle helps marginalize those issues for us in that style.

Great interview with coach Lindland. I love his enthusiasm. He has the energy that this team needed.

After viewing the interview with coach Rob Hermann, which covered the performance of our first four Greco wrestlers, his belief was that our guys need international experience. I agree, and hopefully our program can do the things it needs to do, to accomplish this.

Greco has a 3rd option, the OTC. With that being said the coaching options for greco at the Jr. and cadet levels are also slim. There are very few guys capable of producing internationally competitive cadet and jr wrestlers. Compound that with how our matches are officiated and what greco we are doing here isn't being done like the rest of the world wrestles greco. There is a huge shortage of refs who even know what is being worked on the mat in front of them. They know how to score a match and mat protocols but they don't make kids wrestle proper greco so they don't learn proper greco. The foundation for greco in the US is very week and any improvements to it wont be fully realized for years.

Are there more than a handful of people in the U.S. who care?
