Good idea.

I attended the Aquinas-Blue Valley North game last Friday. My nominees from Aquinas who started and played most of the game and were starters on the wrestling team last year are (weights listed are last years wrestling weights):

RJ Nill 152 Defensive End
EJ Walter 189 Defensive Tackle
Mike Hammer 215 Defensive Tackle
Alex Lopez 275 Offensive Tackle

From Blue Valley North the only starter I know of was Casey Curran. Casey played running back and safety. I would have given Casey the MVP of the game. He will probably win more than an all wrestler football team honors this year. He should be in the mix for all Metro and all State football honors this year. He is a very talented football player.

I apologize if I left out any other wrestlers from Aquinas or Blue Valley North who started the game. If I did perhaps someone else could fill in the gaps.

I will add Rich Blazevic 189 of Turner. I have seen in the news that Rich seems to be having a very productive season as Turner's quarterback this year.

3-2-1-A returning State Champ @ 215 Steve Foster was rated second in the state in rushing yards last week. In just 3 games he is averaging over 200 yards per game. Not bad.

At Shawnee Mission East, Drew Robinson (215) is playing center and Matt Baker (189) is their strong-side linebacker & left offensive tackle.

I'd love to see him wrestle at the DI level, but his plans right now are to play football at that level. After talking to him he's being heavily recruited to play linebacker. He is a beast, and a very fast one at that.

A running back that size averaging over 200 yards per game, Wow! I believe Bill Callahan in Lincoln, Nebraska needs to be aware of this wrestler/football player. Too bad he wasn't available for their game with USC last Saturday.

Tonight Dirks had like 120 yards on 2 carries before getting hurt and not playing again, he looked very good. He said he was alright though and doesnt expect to miss any more playing time.

Will Irvine of Chapman has been monstrous on both offense and defense this year.

Jon Arveson is just slick as can be and is like watching someone play a video game with the ability he has to juke and make people miss.

Not sure on overall stats, but they have been lighting it up for the Irish.

Blazevic had a hand in all five touchdowns in Turner's 30 to 16 win over Bishop Ward yesterday 9/22/06. Blazevic threw three touchdown passes and had two touchdown runs.

Casey Curran of Blue Valley North had a monster game against Blue Valley undefeated and I believe #1 in 5A Kansas and #2 in the KC Metro area for big schools. Casey's team lost to Blue Valley 52-17 but Casey had 232 yards in 22 carries, including touchdown runs of 79 and 73 yards.

The Aquinas wrestlers also had big days in their 27-0 win over Blue Valley Northwest. Alex Lopez offered great blocking for runners and protection for the quarterback. Mike Hammer, RJ Nill and EJ Walter led the defensive front four's charge. Hammer had a lot of tackles many of which were behind the line of scrimmage. Last night after the game, I saw one Kansas City TV news station with highlights of the game which showed Hammer making a hard tackle on the Blue Valley Northwest ball carrier behind the line on a play. The TV news reporter said that the ball carrier was "hammered" by Mike Hammer.

I was sent this website recently which keeps stats for several sports and ranks the top 50 athletes in each sport. I see many wrestlers listed under the football tab. I wonder how we get them to add wrestling.

Casey Curran continues to add to his string of impressive performances. He is making a very strong run at All Metro and State honors. Here is an short update of his performance Thursday night 9/28/06 in Blue Valley North's game against Blue Valley West as reported today 9/30/06 in the Kansas City Star:

Blue Valley North senior tailback Casey Curran picked up a bushel of carries, yards, touchdowns and school records Thursday night at Blue Valley High School.

Curran ran the ball 52 times for 361 yards-both BV North records-and scored four touchdowns as the Mustangs defeated hosted Blue Valley West 26-14. Curran also had 28 yards receiving for 389 total yards, which is also a school record. His longest touchdown run went for 85 yards.

Oh, and Curran added an interception at free safety.

"He is a football player," BV North coach Jason Jones said. "He doesn't avoid contact. He doesn't want to come off the football field. If you want to find a guy to build a team around, he's a good one."

Zach Smith of Washburn Rural is having a great season in the tough Centennial League. He ran for 167 yards last evening.
