Malay189,

Stan was better than good. Legendary Coach Jake Durham told me in the late 80's (his opinion may have changed in the ensuing almost 20 years) that Stan was the best high school wrestler he had seen!

Well, the reason I didn't list Falkender as the best is that he could do whatever the heck he wanted to. I don't know if Stan would remember this or not but once at the state tourney in Beloit while he was coaching at Ellis I was sitting by him and we were watching Rory wrestle and I made the comment that he reminded me of someone and he laughed and told me he should cause he grew up right next to him and then it made sense to me. I have coached against or seen most of the best this state had to offer since 1965 and brother Stan Falkender could do it all. Rory was a dead leg wrestler. Stan could go whatever way you wanted to go. It was sort of a pick your poison kind of deal with him. He was really a beautiful wrestler to watch, as was Rory but with Rory you knew exactly what you were going to get. It didn't do you any good, but you knew what he was bringing and it was the cross-body ride (or pin in his case lol)

I would very much agree with Jake on what Stan meant to wrestling at that time. He sort of inspired a lot of young wrestlers, myself included at the time, to think a little bit more creatively and was really the first guy I saw that made an impression on me that wrestling was a kind of art form. I have not always agreed with Jake but I sure do this time.

Nick Shumate was one of the better leg riders that I have seen. He was real aggressive with it.

We had a lot of fun at the Basehor tourney with the Artist brothers from Glenwood, Iowa. I know they are not Kansas Wrestlers but they reminded me of Rory and Stan and many others who were practitioners of the leg arts. They sure were named right lol they were artists. I think the younger one is at Iowa State now. You don't see many cross body guys anymore but a lot more Turkers and varients of the turk. Referees have sort of taken the crossbody out of wrestling because they see it as a stall. In the hands or legs of the right guy though it certainly is not. I don't think a lot of referees understand the technique and they tend to call it a stall or take it out for stalemates before the wrestler gets to where he wants to be.

The more I think of it the more names come to mind. Gary Walters of St. Francis was a mean sucker with his legs. St. Francis has a run of guys like that, most of them named Kellers,Walters,Cooks,Bandels, etc. Big families of leg wrestlers. Bet the living rooms took a beating there.

Wetfal: My brother pushed me through the drywall in our hallway once. Not sure if leg wrestling was involved, but needless to say Momma Keller was not happy.

What I think was different about Rory was the way he would figure 4 (yes it was legal then) the body and get up high and just make a lot of people give up and turn over. Never saw anyone get as high as him and still make it work.

You aint kidding about him riding high. I saw him hang a toe inside the thigh of a kid at the state tourney in 75 and pin him reaching back for a half. He could barely reach him with his hand. When I was coaching at Caney I made my kids watch Rory and Gienger warm up. They were so smooth and they did it so right that they were a coaching moment for my kids.

Shumate is also a personal pick of mine
