Newman U Schedule Announcement!

2007-08 Wrestling Schedule
10/3/2007

"The Newman University Wrestling team released its schedule for the 2007-08 season," fourth year Wrestling coach Mark Stovall announced. The Newman Jets will begin the season with the annual Labette Takedown Tournament in Parsons, Kan. on Nov. 3rd. Prior to the LCC Takedown Tournament, however, the Jets will compete in the Red and Blue Varsity Wrestle-Offs at home on October 26 at 7 p.m. The Jets will offer a $5 clinic for all wrestlers from the ages of 5-12 45 minutes before the action begins.

The team will start dual competition when the Jets host the Beavers from Pratt Community College at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8th. Next Saturday, the grapplers will head to Mitchell, South Dakota for the Dakota Wesleyan University Open.

On Nov. 18, the squad will travel to Golden, Colo. for the Colorado School of Mines Duals. The very next day, the Jets will travel north to Greeley, Colo. for the Northern, Colorado Open.

The Thanksgiving break will prove to be a competitive holiday weekend when the Newman University squad travels to Norman, Okla. for the always tough Oklahoma Open. The Jets will face opponents from perennial power house Oklahoma State and other Division I teams.

In December, Stovall’s team will wrestle in two tournaments. One of which is the Fort Hays State University Open in Hays, Kan. on the 1st. The following Saturday, the Jets will host the Newman Open.

The Jets will bring in the year of 2008 with a home dual against the Colorado School of Mines. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m. The dual action will continue that weekend when the team travels down to Dallas, Texas for the Lone Star Duals. Dual action doesn’t stop there. The team will then travel to the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NWCA) National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Jan. 12 and 13. Coach Stovall’s team is in a transition period, as the school recently moved up from NAIA to NCAA Division II. Because of the probationary period, the Jets will compete against teams in the NCWA at the prestigious National Duals. “There is nothing ‘club’ about teams like GrandValleyState and Central Florida,” said Coach Stovall. “I have a lot of respect for teams in the NCWA, but I am confident that this year’s team will have a very successful year.”

The Jets host two more home duals against foes Fort Hays State University (FHSU)and Central Missouri State University. The FHSU dual will begin at 7 p.m. on January 25. The last home action will start at 7 p.m. on February 13 against the CMSU Mules.

The Jets will close out the dual season when they travel down to Oklahoma City for the Oklahoma City University (OCU) quadrangular. The Jets will face the likes of OCU, Missouri Baptist, and McKendree University.

The post-season competition begins with the NCWA Conference Tournament at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. on March 1. The season closes when the team travels to Lakeland, Florida for the NCWA National Tournament. The host is Central Florida, and competition will be on March 13 - 14.

Good Luck Jets!

With Chenowith, Johnson, Wall, Hagan and Fox, this will be a fun team to watch this year. Eight Texans on the roster too.

This Friday night will be our wrestle offs. It starts at 7:00 pm and will be free for all people to watch. Before the dual we will be having a clinic for kids of all ages. The clinic will cost $5 and will go towards our travel expenses for our national tournament this year. The clinic will start at 6:00 pm.

I couldn't find the results for this in the paper, and I couldn't make it because of a math conference. I checked the Eagle online, but couldn't find it either. Could someone post the results?

Newman wrestlers raise bar

In their last season before NCAA Division II, the Jets face a tougher schedule.

BY MATT BROWNING
Wichita Eagle Correspondent

One year is all that remains for the Newman wrestling team in its provisional stage between NAIA and NCAA Division II.

Since the Jets aren't affiliated with either, they compete in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association, a club wrestling-type organization that brings in Division I, II, III and junior college schools to its tournaments.

Newman will focus on continued growth and development in the NCWA before moving to NCAA II.

If last year is any indication, it's only going to get better for the Jets.

"The expectations are continuing to get higher and the kids know it," said coach Mark Stovall, in his fourth season with the Jets. "We were so close to having six or seven All-Americans last season. We've been training to get over that hump."

Instead of the six or seven NCWA All-Americans, Newman had two.

Junior Issac Wall finished third at the NCWA national tournament in the 133-pound class, while Clay Goodloe took eighth in the 141-pound class. Both are back this season.

Along with Wall and Goodloe, 2006 national champion Curtis Chenoweth also returns.

"With all the guys we have back, we should rack up a ton of points," Goodloe said. "The NCWA is really difficult, but I don't see why we can't win in it."

What's more encouraging is there are only two seniors on the roster.

So when next season rolls in, Newman should need little personnel adjustment.

"Our program won't change much -- we're still going to get better," Stovall said. "We might have to change recruiting a little bit, but we still want the best kids in the Midwest."

The move to NCAA Division II won't alter the Jets' scheduling.

"We're called an 'independent' since none of the other Heartland Conference schools have wrestling," Stovall said. "Teams around the area see how we've climbed the ladder, so they want to schedule us. This is by far the best schedule we've had."

Newman begins its challenging regular season Thursday with a home dual with Pratt Community College.

More tests are to come with dates against Fort Hays State, Colorado School of Mines and Central Missouri.

This time next year, the Division II label will be in front of the program.

"It's going to be tough," Goodloe said. "But Division II doesn't stand out in bold letters and scare us."

Chenoweth - Men's Player of the Week

Lindsay Schneider - 11/7/2007

Curtis Chenoweth of Wrestling has been named Men's Player of the Week for Oct. 29 - Nov. 4.

After sitting out a year to recover from neck surgery, Chenoweth wasted no time showing how he won the NAIA National Championship for Newman University in 2006 as a true freshman. Chenoweth did not have an offensive point scored against him this past weekend at the Labette tournament in Parsons, Kan. He finished the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record. Chenoweth was one of four Newman wrestlers to reach the finals, but was the only one to capture an individual championship for the Jets.
