I apologize if this question has already been answered. In this provisional stage year between NAIA and NCAA D-II competition how does it effect the wrestler's competition status? Do they lose a year of eligibility or is it considered the same as a redshirt year?

I didn't know Isaac had transferred to OSU? Actually either a typo or wishful thinking by Richard.

Looks like they have it messed up, but I know Isaac don't go to school there. At least he didn't the other night when I spoke to him. Nice to know though, you posted it like they stated it, I guess that says something about OU.

I didn't have the typo, even Richard just recorded what they had. I just can't figure out why OU would be looking for a way for one of their wrestlers to get beat by an OSU wrestler by way of Kansas Newman

Good point. The transcriber must be used to that.

Isaac attended a couple of camps at OU. Isaac decided that he like the program and would like to see if they would even extend a walk-on invitation to him. An assistant, who is no longer there, watched him the rest of camp and told him they would keep an eye on him during his senior campaign. After all was said and done, it was determined that Isaac wasn't good enough on his feet to be DI material. In the end, perhaps he was good enough. I wonder if any of those thoughts entered his mind as motivation as he was beginning to warm up for his finals match? Excellent job Isaac!

Wall Rolls Through Another Tournament

Mark Stovall - 11/26/2007

Isaac Wall proved why he is an All-American this past weekend at the annual Oklahoma University Open. Wall defeated NCAA Divison I opponent Joey Fio of Oklahoma University. The high scoring match ended at 15-12. Wall was the only Jet to place at the tournament, but several of the wrestlers won some big matches.

Johnston - Men's Player of the Week

Lindsay Schneider - 11/26/2007

Jake Johnston of Newman Jets Wrestling has been named Men's Player of the Week for Nov. 12 - 18.

Johnston finished of a very busy weekend of wrestling with a very respectable 7-3 record with 1 pin. Two of Johnston’s loses came from nationally ranked NCAA II wrestlers and was one round away from finishing in the medal round at the NCAA Div. I Northern Colorado Open. Johnston’s performance this weekend moved him up to a #2 National ranking in the National Collegiate Wresting Association.

The Newman Jets Wrestling team shined last night against the Colorado School of Mines. The Jets won the dual by taking 7 of the 10 matches and amassing a score of 34-15.

The dual started with the 174 lb. weight class with Nate Alvarez winning in a decisive fashion over Nathan McClain 16-3. Josh Fansler won his match by way of fall at 184 lbs. before the Jets dropped two matches in a row. The first match dropped was due to forfiet, while the next match lost by the Jets was at Heavyweight. Zach Hanford got pinned by Bryan Stransbury. The Jets answered right back, however, with a pin by Isasc Wall at 125 lbs. The next and last match won by a Colorado School of Mines wrestler was Kellen Costelow at 133 lbs. Costelow won a hard fought match against Newman's John Hagan 5-3. The last four matches was won by Newman. Aeron Hill, Clay Goodloe, Jake Johnston, and Steven Sprague finished up the night. Johnston picked up 6 points for the Jets by pinning his opponent, while Sprague won the match due to forfiet.

The Jets head south to Dallas, Texas this weekend for the annual Lone Star Duals. The next home action for the Jets is on Jan. 25 when the team takes on the Tigers from Fort Hays State University.

Newman will be hosting CMSU tomorrow night for our final home dual of the season. It'll start at 7:00pm and admission is $3 for students and $5 for adults. The dual will be at the Newman gymnasium which is the big shiny building that can be seen off Kellogg in west Wichita.

Now that the postseason has begun, who is Newman sending to the NCWA regionals. As I understand it, they can have backups wrestle. Will they send everyone? Any injuries preventing some from competing? I haven't seen Kitchen or Oyler in any boxscores recently.

Wrestlers Take 2nd at Nationals

Lindsay Schneider - 3/17/2008

The Newman University Wrestling Team finished its season March 15 with a runner-up finish at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) National Championships in Lakeland, Fla. The Jets missed the No. 1 spot by only 10 points to returning national champion Grand Valley State University. Nine Newman Jets earned All-American status at the championship tournament.

“The wrestling team performed in an outstanding manner,” said Newman Head Wrestling Coach Mark Stovall. “Every member on the team contributed points by winning matches that enabled us to take the second place finish. I’m very proud of these young men who put in such hard work throughout the season. There’s no better reward as a coach than to see these student-athletes perform at this level and give so much to the team.”

Freshman Josh Fansler from Ponca City, Okla., was the lone champion of the team, claiming the title in the 184 lbs. category by pinning his opponent in his final match. Isaac Wall, Clay Goodloe and Florian Temengil all made it to the championship finals but failed to win their final matches. Wall, a junior from Andover, Kan., fell to the returning national champion at 125 lbs. by a tight score of 6-5. Goodloe, a junior from Plano, Texas, lost 8-6 in overtime in the 149 lb. category championship finals. In the heavyweight category, junior Temengil from Dallas, Texas, also lost in overtime to the returning national champion in his final match-up by a score of 7-5.

Four Jets wrestlers placed 7th at the tournament: John Hagan (125 lbs.) of Wichita; Jayme Hoover (149 lbs.) of Salina, Kan.; Curtis Chenoweth (174 lbs.) of Clearwater, Kan., and Zach Hanford (Heavyweight) of Jenks, Okla. James Fox of Wichita placed 8th after an injury forced him to default to his last opponent of the tournament.

Also qualifying for the tournament, but not earning a spot on the podium were Kyle Oyler (133 lbs.) of Hutchinson, Kan.; Jake Johnston (157 lbs.) of Wichita; Aeron Hill (157 lbs.) of Dallas, Texas; Steven Sprague (165 lbs.) of Tahlequah, Okla., and Nate Alvarez (165 lbs.) of Salina, Kan.

This is the last year the Jets will participate in the NCWA as they make the move to NCAA Division II next year.

Hey, I'm gonna catch all hell for writing this but I'm pretty sure someone needs to. Recently our head coach resigned. As of right now we don't have a practice room but have been promised an area and a small amount of money for construction to actually make it a practice room. As most of you know the Heartland D2 conference does not have wrestling. Also due to not having a practice room our recruiting numbers aren't very high. So at Newman we have big problems. I'm hoping someone in the wrestling community, maybe even better someone that might be interested in the head coaching job could go in ASAP and make some promises to the university that they would recruit real hard or whatever they need to hear so that we have a team next year.

Something I forgot was that we have a new AD and he has also put in his letter of resignation but is still serving til August. We really don't have anyone fighting for us. I know the Athletic Director is having meetings today to discuss our program.

My information is the best to my knowledge.
