Labette wins first dual of year

In a showdown between the fourth- and 12th-ranked wrestling programs in the country, the No. 4 Labette Community College wrestlers traveled to Chanute to take on No. 12 Neosho County in their first official dual of the year. Labette fell behind early, but rallied to pull out a 22-15 dual victory.

"It was a very intense and wild atmosphere," said LCC coach Joe Renfro. "It was packed, with half the crowd cheering for Labette and the other half cheering for Neosho."

Labette started off in a hole in the 125-pound match when Neosho's Donte Butler scored a fall on Labette's Jared Denler for a quick 6-0 lead. The Cardinals fell further behind in the next match at 133 pounds as Neosho's Jared Spoon scored a 3-2 decision over Scott Berens to make the score 9-0.

Labette roared back to win three straight, including a major decision at 149 pounds. Labette's Willy Pendleton netted the Cardinals four points for his 20-8 win over Neosho's Ty Jaquess. Joseph Cornejo followed that up with a pin in the 157-pound match over Neosho's Dustin Burton to give Labette the lead for the first time at 13-9.

Labette would extend the lead to 16-9, only to see Neosho close the gap to 16-15 with two straight decisions. Then Chance Recountre and Ben Hohensee closed the night out with two decisions for the Cardinals.

"Our boys wrestled hard," Renfro said, "but there is definitely room for improvement. This was our first official dual of the year and we certainly proved it by some of the mistakes we made, but we will correct them and move on."

Labette will travel to Pratt to take on 11th-ranked Pratt Community College on Wednesday.

LCC wrestlers dominate Pratt

The Labette Community College wrestling team lived up to its new No. 3 national ranking Wednesday, traveling to No. 16 Pratt and delivering a convincing 38-3 victory.

"That's the kind of separation you're going to see," said Cardinal coach Joe Renfro, "between the top three or four teams and the rest."

The Cardinals definitely separated themselves from Pratt Wednesday, despite illness taking a toll on some of the wrestlers.

"We had a couple of guys with the flu," Renfro said, "but they went out and competed hard. You can't expect anything less at this level."

Renfro said Chance Rencountre, wrestling at 197 pounds, even had to come off the mat to vomit. Rencountre, ranked fifth in the country by the NJCAA, scored a 7-5 decision over Carl Wilkinson.

Renfro was pleased by the effort in the Cardinal's lone loss, a 5-4 decision by Tommy Edgmon, who is ranked eighth at 125 pounds, over Labette's Jared Denler.

"He (Edgmon) is better than us, and Jared still went out and competed hard," Renfro said.

Joe Yust's efforts also drew praise from Renfro. Renfro Yust scored a pinfall over his opponent, Jake Thomas, at 174 pounds.

"Joe had been struggling a little bit," Renfro said. "He went out and attacked and got after it with a fire in his belly."

The Cardinals depart today for the prestigious Kaufman-Brand tournament hosted by the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The tournament is the collegiate world's largest single-day wrestling meet, and it draws traditional NCAA Division I powerhouses like Iowa and Oklahoma State.

Labette County is one of only six junior colleges to enter this year.

"It's a big deal," Renfro said. "And it's long. By the end of the day, some of our guys will have wrestled nine or ten matches."

The tournament is split into two divisions, amateur and elite. The elite division is intended for wrestlers with college experience. Renfro said most of the Cardinals will compete in the elite division.

KAUFMAN BRAND OPEN

Here are some of the notable results from the Labette Wrestlers. I believe that the Kaufman Brand Open is still the largest one day tourney in the country...it is still extremely tough competition.

ELITE DIVISION

Joe Cornejo (157)-Labette -Finished 2nd... Lost to CP Schlatter (Minn) in finals 6-4...Also scored a 2-0 win over N. Erisman.

Mikey Morgan (165)-Labette - went 3-2

Tim Elliot (133)-Unattached - went 3-2

AMATEUR DIVISION

Derek Ward (141)-Finished 4th (Went 4-2, lost in Semi)

Chance Rencountre (197)-Finished 3rd (Went 5-2, lost TB in Semi)

Ben Hohensee (HWT)-Finished 5th (Went 5-2)

Rafeon Stots (141-Unattached) 3-2

More details on Cornejo...

Cornejo lost that finals match 6-4 in SV Overtime after fighting off a single for 30 seconds or so. His opponent CP Schlatter (Minn) is currently ranked #5 in Division 1.

Cornejo is great to watch wrestle!

Yes I totally agree with Chief Renegade--the big question is where will Joe's talents lead him next?

You have to take the opportunity to see this wrestler dominate so fluidly in the sport.

In it to win it.

WOW .. nice win for Parks at 133 .. I've wrestled Shinn, Elliott, AND Parks .. didnt see him coming out on top as a freshmen... he must be REALLY blossuming at the college level

I don't know if Morgan and Cornejo wrestled or not...It would surprise me if they didn't place and they wrestled. Do you know who beat them?

I know Elliot is fat and out of shape...that helps explain his recent lackluster performances. He should be back up to speed second semester (at UCO).

Elliott is wanting to fight after college. Which explains his weight gain. But its definately not fat. But he is very out of shape since he is not part of a team and doesnt have to do everything that Labette does. But by next semester he will be a lot better

Elliott is a bad little skinny dude... I meant "fat and out of shape" as opposed to "lean and mean". He is wrestling out of shape at 133. Elliott is capable of competing with anyone in the college ranks regardless of division. In shape I don't think he is loosing the matches that I have seen he has lost...even the D1 guys. He should be at the top of the awards stand come Nationals...it's not all that far off though.

I am suprised then! It has sounded in recent years like the OU Open is getting watered down competition...I guess that depends on weight class and year. Cornejo beat two ranked D1 guys (13th and 14th?)and then took #4 to OT at Omaha....who beat him at the OU Open?

I hear Mikey lost to an OU guy.

Cornejo hurt his shoulder, Mikey got dq'ed, and Willie Pendleton got hit by a car while running off a few pounds and still finished 2nd. Now thats dedication.
